Moved to within a small team of selected training instructors tasked in the professional rehabilitation of recruits who have failed professionally or physically in training. 
A demanding role retraining recruits with very poor performance levels within in a short time frame with the intention of returning the recruits to training. 
A highly rewarding role that has highly tested my ability to coach and mentor some of our hardest recruits to train with rewarding outputs when recruits are successful, return to training and pass for duty.

I’m a former Marine. I’m a man. I’m a dad. I shouldn’t feel like this. 

I want you to look at this photo and see the false person staring back. The mask I wore to protect the kids.

I was so sad inside when I took this photo. But it’s a typical “look strong in front of the kids” picture.

I took it a few days after Christmas, almost a year ago. My wife was at work, and I took the kids out for a ride on their new scooters.

To anyone passing by, I was just normal old dad, out with the kids and their new presents.

I can even look at it myself, and can be convinced that I’m “Ok.”

But the smile is completely false.

The festive cheer is fake.

The perceived happiness isn’t real.

I’d been feeling like this for years. By the time this photo was taken, I was only two weeks away from almost not being here.

This is what depression looks like, forcing smiles during the day, using alcohol in the evenings just to be the fun, playful dad I couldn’t access on my own.

The kids never knew. They just saw Dad.

A year on, I’ve never felt so good. And I never want this feeling to slip.

I wish more men and dads knew about this better feeling on the other side of opening up. 

It takes vulnerability, openness, and willingness to grow. It’s terrifying. But it’s worth it.

It takes a strong man to do so. 

To the dads and men reading this:

That mask you’re wearing is killing you. You think you’re protecting your family by staying strong. But you’re slowly disappearing while standing right in front of them.

Opening up feels like weakness. It’s not. It’s the bravest thing you’ll ever do.

Talk to someone. Your partner. A friend. A therapist. A helpline. Say out loud: “I’m not okay.” The rest comes after that. 

Your kids need you here. Your family want you here. Not the performance. Not the mask. You!

The real you is worth fighting for. I’m proof it’s possible.

I’m moving into venture capital.

It’s a decision that’s been years in the making. And I’m doing it to invest in the community I know best: veterans.

Seven years ago, I started my entrepreneurial journey after leaving the military. It’s been one hell of a ride, as a founder. I’ve loved most of it. But it’s also been brutal. And the barriers I faced weren’t the usual ones every normal founder deals with. They were different.

On the many occasions, I went out to raise capital, I sat across from VCs trying to explain my vision. But there was always something lost in translation. They didn’t understand my background, the way I thought about problems, or the leadership experience I brought. I wasn’t speaking their language, and they weren’t speaking mine. Every pitch felt like I was proving myself all over again, not as a founder, but as someone who belonged in that room at all. It was exhausting. And I knew I wasn’t alone.

Veterans own 6% of UK small businesses (around 340,000), but we’re virtually invisible in the VC-backed startup world. The infrastructure is there: capital, networks, accelerators, mentorship. But it’s not built for us. It’s not accessible in the way it needs to be.

After years of navigating this landscape, countless conversations with other veteran founders, and a lot of soul-searching with my wife, with what the next part of my career should be, I’ve made a decision.

I’m building the UK’s first impact fund for veteran entrepreneurs.

This fund will provide what I wish I’d had: capital, yes, but also mentorship, community, structured training, and wellbeing support. Because I’ve learned that veteran founders don’t just need money. They need an ecosystem that understands them.

Veterans bring something unique to entrepreneurship. Discipline. Resilience. The ability to execute under pressure. Strategic thinking honed in the most demanding environments. These aren’t just buzzwords. They’re the foundation of how we operate.

I’m building this because the community that shaped me deserves better. And because I believe veteran-led startups will shape the future of the UK economy.

In this picture, I’m being calmed back down by my commander, in the heat of the battle. 

I'm on a rooftop in an overwatch position, alone. I'm watching a corner of a wall where I can see someone in full black, a typical fighting-age male, peering around, then back.

I'm already on edge. Forty-five minutes earlier, we were ambushed. Only enemies are in the area.

He peers around again, no more than 70-100 meters away, just into the shadows of overhanging trees.

"He's Taliban," I say to myself, desperately trying to identify a weapon.

The adrenaline is surging.

He appears again.

But there's an issue. We've just sent a small team forward to flush the enemy out, and there's a chance they're close to the wall or in the trees I'm watching.

I can't see them.

Scanning the treeline, about to call out to the team below, bullets snap into the log I'm behind for cover, and around my head.

The snap as rounds get close. The wizz, as they get even nearer.

I take frantic cover, feeling the velocity of each lead wasp.

Staying low and crawling back to the edge of the rooftop, I drop onto a ledge, stand up, and let off an almighty burst of fire from my weapon. Another burst from the enemy answers mine, and suddenly we're in a duel.

But over the firing, I hear the command: "BEN, BEN, BEN. WAIT!"

It's my corporal, Vicey.

I let off another burst. I'm locked into the adrenaline, losing control. 

"BEN." The command is loud and snaps my attention as I duck. Then, calmly, I hear: "Hold your fucking horses. We have lads out there. Now, point out where you see the enemy."

I'm back, thinking clearly. I'd lost control, and my commander had grounded me. Nothing gets sorted with clouded judgment, and he knew this. Vicey needed his men calm, in control, and limiting the chance of any accidents or mistakes being made.

This is what calm under pressure physically looks like. 

The Lesson:

When your team is under extreme pressure, and someone is losing control, your job isn't to add to the noise. Your job is to be the calm anchor point that brings them back to clear thinking. Use their name. Get their attention. Remind them of what matters. Then redirect them with purpose.

Paul Vice MC understood that good decisions required clear minds, and clear minds required a leader who stayed composed when everyone else couldn't. He didn't strip me of agency. He restored my ability to use it effectively.

That's leadership: bringing order to chaos, not through force, but through presence and clarity.

Don't add to the noise. Be the calm in it.

Today is International Men’s Day.

And I’m going to be honest with you: for most of my life, I didn’t feel like a man.

I felt like I was playing one.

I was a Royal Marines Commando. Served in Afghanistan. Like combat sports. Built businesses. Lifted weights. Did all the “right” things.

But inside? I was terrified.

Terrified to feel anything. Terrified someone would see through the act. Terrified that if I stopped pretending, I’d crumble. Terrified that the mask might come off. 

So I hid. From my emotions. From who I actually was. From myself.

I thought being a man meant being invincible.
Turns out, it just meant being alone.

This year, I stood on a cliff edge. Literally. Ready to end it because I couldn’t carry the weight of pretending anymore.

The weight of “being strong.”

The weight of “not showing weakness.”

The weight of being the version of a man I thought I had to be.

But here’s the twist: the moment I finally admitted I was broken was the moment I actually became strong.

Not strong in the “chest-out, chin-up” way. Strong in the “I’m terrified but I’m going to deal with this anyway” way.

I got therapy. I quit drinking. I cried….a lot. I told people I wasn’t okay.

And guess what? I’m still here. Still a man. Just a real one now.

Lads, if you’re reading this and feeling like you’re faking it:

You’re not broken. You’re not weak. You’re not less of a man.

You’re just human.

And the world needs you to stop pretending you’re not. We need more humans. 

You don’t have to suffer in silence. You don’t have to carry it all alone. You don’t have to be invincible to be valuable.

Real strength isn’t about never falling apart. 
It’s about having the balls to put yourself back together.

You can be strong AND cry at Toy Story.

You can lift weights AND go to therapy.

You can check the strange noises at night AND admit when you’re scared.

You don’t have to choose. You get to be both.

So today, on International Men’s Day, here’s what I want you to know:

It’s okay to not be okay.
It’s okay to ask for help.
It’s okay to change.
It’s okay to be a man. 

Change saved my life. It might save yours too.

You’re not alone.

I felt like a fraud as an author. 

And it stopped me from opening up about my mental health.

I know what held me back from speaking out about my mental health this year: I'm the author of the bestselling self-help book, Commando Mindset, published by Penguin Random House.

I wrote chapters about overcoming adversity, building resilience, and dealing with challenges. I showed readers how to find purpose and motivation and set audacious goals.

I was featured on The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett, BBC Radio 5 with Nihal, appeared in Esquire magazine, and delivered my material on Simon Sinek's Ignite Academy platform.

I received emails, messages, and comments about how the book transformed lives. I signed hundreds of copies. I got booked to speak at iconic companies like Gymshark, Meta, Audi UK, and Sky.

The book got a double-page spread in The Times. It was endorsed by Channel 4 legend Jason Fox.

On the outside, most people looked at that and thought, "This guy has it together."

But behind the scenes, it was a different story. And at its worst, this January.

The irony? I actually read my own book this year. I had to take a leaf out of my own title just to get through some of my troubles.

And that's when I realised: the more successful people think you are, the harder it becomes to open up.

Because once you've created a certain image, such as the expert, the leader, the person with all the answers, the voice gets louder: "People can't see me like this."

Maybe you're a parent who feels you need to be strong for your kids. Maybe you're in a leadership position and worry that vulnerability will shatter trust. Maybe you've built a reputation, and you're terrified that showing the real you will damage the illusion.

So you don't say anything. You keep it together. You keep performing. You try to keep going.

And it builds. And builds. And builds.

Until, like me, you one day snap.

Here's the truth I've learned: it doesn't matter who you are or what you do. Opening up about how you feel isn't optional, but necessary.

The credentials don't protect you. The success doesn't shield you. The platform doesn't make you immune.

If anything, they make it harder to ask for help. But that's exactly when you need it most.

I'm not writing this because I have it all figured out. I'm writing this because I didn't. And staying silent nearly broke me.

So if you're reading this and you're struggling, whether you're at the top of your game or just starting, please know: opening up isn't weakness. It's the bravest thing you can do.

Don't try to look strong. Be strong. And remember, the strongest open up.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I hit post yesterday.

Within a day, I’ve met new investors and mentors who get the vision and want to back veteran founders.

With all the excitement in the new venture this week, I still got time with mum.

Few people know this, but it was my mum who saved my life back in January this year.

I was in a dark place, darker than I’d ever been. Feet physically on the edge. I’d convinced myself that no one would really miss me and that I needed out. But my mum rang. I looked at my phone. And there on the screensaver were my kids’ faces.

That call snapped me back to reality. To make change. I call it the phone call that saved my life.

This week, mum happened to be in London when I was. I had back-to-back meetings lined up. New ventures, opportunities, investors, all the exciting stuff that feels urgent. 

It would have been so easy to text her: “Sorry mum, slammed today. Next time.”

Instead, I rescheduled a meeting I had planned, and instead grabbed dinner with Mum. 

I carved out time for one of my hero’s. 

I paid, as an early birthday treat (big boy pants on). And we had one of the most engaged, energised conversations we’ve had in ages.

We’ve always shared a deep bond. But since January, since that phone call, everything feels different. Every dinner with her is time I almost didn’t have.

That call in January could have gone to voicemail. I could have stepped. This dinner could have never happened. 

Thankfully, life had other plans. 

Make time for the people you love. Not next week. Not when things calm down. Now. Tell them you love them. Hug them. Show up when you can. Remind yourself that there are no more important meetings, than meeting those you love. 

Remember: it’s a short ride down here. And none of us know when the music stops.

Tackling my anxiety in busy public places.

This weekend, my wife and I took a break to the City, just the two of us, to do some sight seeing and see Ricky Gervais.

I almost didn’t go.

Busy public places have become more and more of an issue for me this year. Where I’ve found myself mentally, I’ve craved nothing but quietness. Stillness. Space.

The thought of crowds, noise, and chaos made me want to stay home.

Not long ago, I would have canceled. Made an excuse. Found a way out.

Because the last time I tried something like this, I couldn’t handle it. The anxiety hit me like a wave. I was sweating. My mind wouldn’t switch off. Every sound felt too loud. Every person felt too close. I couldn’t breathe properly.

So I hid. I left. I told myself it was safer to just stay away.

But this time? This time was different.

I went. And I didn’t just survive it.

I was calm. Content. Present.

No panic. No sweating through my shirt. No counting down the minutes until I could escape. No mental spiral.

For the first time in years, I felt… relaxed.
I won the battle in my mind. And that’s something I haven’t been able to say for a very long time.

This is what therapy does.

It quiets the noise. It helps you face the things you’ve been avoiding for years. It gives you back the life anxiety stole from you.
I’m not fixed. I’m not “cured.” But I’m here. And I’m living again.

Here’s the truth: Avoidance doesn’t make fear smaller. It just makes your world smaller.
Every time we avoid something that scares us, we teach ourselves we can’t handle it. And slowly, our world shrinks.

Recovery isn’t about waiting until you feel brave. It’s about showing up while you’re still scared. It’s about getting the help you need. It’s about doing the work, even when it’s hard.

So here’s my question for you:

What are you avoiding right now that’s keeping you stuck?

Is it a difficult conversation? Returning to work? A social event? Asking for help? Starting therapy?

The fear won’t disappear before you face it. It disappears because you face it.

And sometimes, you need help to get there. That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.

You don’t have to feel ready. You just have to show up.

And when you do, you’ll remember something you forgot: You’re stronger than you think.

Veterans: people want to back you in founding businesses.

I've spent this week back in London, meeting with veteran founders, mentors and investors. And I keep hearing the same thing: "We see the value. We want to invest in veteran founders. We just don't know how to reach them."

Let that sink in for a second.

The capital and support are there. The appetite is there. The belief in what you bring to entrepreneurship is there, and in bucketloads.

What's missing is the bridge.

That's what I'm building. A way to connect incredible veteran founders with the capital and people who genuinely want to support them. Not just with capital, but with mentorship, networks, and understanding.

To every veteran thinking about starting something, or to those struggling to find that momentum: you're not the problem. The ecosystem is. And we're fixing it.

I'm on a mission, raising investment to support a group of 10x Founders, who are hugely underrepresented. Veterans 🪖🎖️ 

Every year, on average, 15,000 people leave the UK Armed Forces. 40% say they are interested in entrepreneurship. But only 7% actually go on to build companies.

Here's what no one tells you:

When a "normal" startup launches, it has an 85-95% chance of dying within the first five years.

When a veteran launches a startup? That drops to 75%.

Veteran-owned businesses already contribute £7bn to the UK economy, turning over £6m on average. Each.

Yet they're chronically underinvested.

Why?

Because investors don't speak their language. Because VCs don't understand that leading a patrol through Helmand, or executing a section attack, teaches you more about resilience, decision-making under pressure, and mission-focused execution than any accelerator ever could.

I know. I lived it.

When I left the military and started building, I had:
• No network.
• No capital access.
• No understanding of startup jargon.
• No track record investors cared about.

It took me years to break through. Years of mistakes that could have been avoided. Years of converting my military skills to entrepreneurship. Years of being underestimated.

And I wasn't alone. The talent is there. The drive is there. The success rate proves it. Yet the infrastructure isn't. 

So I'm building it.

In January 2026, I'm launching a platform that doesn't just write cheques to veteran founders. It removes the barriers I faced. Capital, yes. But also: community, education, network access, mentorship, and wellbeing support: all in one place.

For personnel straight from service. For founders already launched. For veterans who've been out for years and are ready to build the next thing.

This isn't charity. This is an opportunity.

The data is screaming at us. Better survival rates. Proven economic contribution. Mission-driven founders who don't quit.

I've booked my first speaking. And honestly? I'm terrified.

But let me be real with you, but back in January, this wasn't just unlikely. It was impossible.

What will be 381 days, when I take to the stage, I was in a dark place, not wanting to be here anymore. The depths. 

Speaking on stage? Being in public? Being here at all? None of it felt possible.

Yet here I am. Nervous as hell. But ready.

I want to thank Andy Dawson and PJ Ellis for not just letting me speak, but for allowing me to be part of the journey. For bringing me into the Wit + Grit story, where we share ideas and tales of people who overcame challenges, whilst never losing their humour.

What I'll be sharing on the day: The famous Royal Marines Spirit, how to find cheerfulness in the face of true adversity. 

Not toxic positivity. Not "good vibes only." But real, hard-fought, messy resilience when life is trying to break you.

The tools that actually worked. The setbacks that nearly destroyed me. The truth about rebuilding when you've lost yourself.
