My Best Strategy Session? A Four-Hour Hike.

After three days of intense strategy work with a leadership team, we spent day four hiking in the woods

No agenda. No whiteboards. No slides. Just movement and conversation.

Something shifted.

When you get people out of chairs and into their bodies, the thinking changes. Ideas that had been stuck started flowing. Conversations that felt forced in the conference room happened naturally on the trail.

There's science behind this. Movement increases blood flow to the brain. Nature reduces cognitive fatigue. Walking side-by-side removes the pressure of eye contact and opens up different kinds of dialogue.

But you don't need the science to see it work. You just need to watch a team that's been grinding through hard problems suddenly relax into insight because they're breathing fresh air and moving through trees.

I've started treating physical movement as a strategic tool, not just a break from the real work. The hike isn't the reward after the strategy. Sometimes it is the strategy.

Protect Your Company By Designing The Startup That Would Kill It.

Sounds counterintuitive. But it works.

I've run this exercise with dozens of leadership teams. We break into small groups, agree on seed capital, and spend 30 minutes designing a startup that would take down their own company.

Then each group presents its attack strategy.

The insights are always uncomfortable—and always valuable.

When teams stop defending what they've built and start thinking like attackers, everything shifts. Current investments become liabilities. Established relationships become anchors. Sacred cows become vulnerabilities.

The concept comes from Clayton Christensen's Innovator's Dilemma. Established companies get disrupted because they're too focused on existing customers and current investments. Startups enter unburdened by those constraints.

Protect Your Company By Designing The Startup.

If You Want A High-Performance Leadership Team, Learn How To Fight Effectively.

Not fight less. Fight better.

The highest-performing teams I've worked with argue constantly. They challenge assumptions. They push back on each other's ideas. They say the uncomfortable thing out loud.

But they do it well.

The difference between constructive debate and destructive conflict isn't the intensity. It's the intent. Great teams fight about ideas, not egos. They attack the problem, not the person. They assume positive intent even when they disagree completely.

Here's why this matters:

Debate drives innovation. When people feel safe to challenge, better solutions emerge. The idea that survives a real fight is stronger than the one that passed through polite nodding.

Debate builds understanding. You don't truly know what your colleagues think until you've pushed on it. The friction reveals assumptions, priorities, and concerns that never surface in agreeable conversations.

Debate creates commitment. People commit to decisions they fought for—even if they lost the argument.

They were heard. They influenced the outcome. That's different from compliance, which fades the moment the meeting ends.

Most leadership teams are too polite to perform. They confuse harmony with alignment. They avoid tension and wonder why decisions don't stick.

The teams that execute best are the ones that learned how to fight—and kept fighting together.

Don't Expect Nice From Private Equity. Expect Math.

The Reason You Can't Innovate Isn't Talent. 

If You're Not Driving Your Technology Vision, Who Is?

Shawn Freeman sold his IT managed services company for 1.4x revenue. After the exit, he noticed a gap that kept showing up across the companies he worked with.

Technology just lands on the CFO or COO. The CEO doesn't want anything to do with it.

That's a problem.

You've got people who are great at what they do—but they don't know how to manage technology. They treat it like a vendor checkbox. Hire someone, pay the invoice, move on.

But if technology isn't part of your overall company strategy, is your company going to have staying power? Or are you always going to be catching up?

Shawn's point: You can 10x your ROI on technology if you do it properly. Most companies never will because no one actually owns it at the leadership level.

Your CFO is great at numbers. That doesn't mean they should drive your tech strategy.

This Forum Thought They Had A Connection Problem. They Had A Discipline Problem.

A peer forum group brought me in to help. They'd been together over a year. Liked each other. They were getting value.

But something had slipped. Meeting prep was inconsistent. People showed up late. Drama over logistics. Presentations weren't as sharp.

They described it as losing the magic. But after surveys and one-on-one conversations, I saw something different.

The small stuff had eroded the container. And without the container, depth becomes harder.

After working with dozens of forums, I've learned that protocols can seem trivial. But they're what create space for the real work.

We spent two days on retreat doing both. Revamped their constitution—commitments around prep, punctuality, logistics. And went deeper into the underlying dynamics that had been building beneath the surface.

The Best Business Advice He Ever Got Came From A Kid's Menu At Friendly's.

Darren Mass was a little kid struggling with a maze on the children's menu. Crayons in hand, stuck.

His mom turned to him and said: do the maze backwards. It's easier.

Start at the end. Work your way back.

Years later, he sat down to write his first business plan. December 19th, 2007, 2:21 AM. For some reason, he started with the exit.

Page one, right after the cover: "Sell to Paytech Communications. 10 years. $40 million."

He sold to Windstream Enterprises—the company that acquired Paytech—for $40 million. December 2017.
Exactly 10 years to the day. They picked the date.

Business was just another maze.

Now when he trains founders, he asks about their exit. Half of them have no concept. No number. No timeline. No target.

His advice: don't run a race unless you know where the finish line is.
