I am the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Since taking office in January 2017, my focus has been to mobilize people and push forward action to address the climate emergency, advance gender equality, and achieve reforms to enhance the UN's efforts to secure peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Throughout my life, I have centered my efforts on ensuring human dignity for all; from my early work as a teacher in the outskirts of Lisbon to the years I spent as Prime Minister of Portugal, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and now Secretary-General.

I was born in Lisbon in 1949 and graduated from the Instituto Superior Técnico with a degree in engineering.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States and Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace and security.
 
All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”
 
I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.
 
I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

I condemn the Israeli Government’s decision to resume land registration procedures in Area C of the occupied West Bank.

The decision could lead to the dispossession of Palestinians of their property and risks expanding Israeli control over land in the area. Such measures, including Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, are not only destabilizing but - as recalled by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) l – unlawful.

All Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the regime associated with them, have no legal validity and are in flagrant violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

I call on the Israeli Government to immediately reverse these measures and on all parties to preserve the only path to lasting peace, a negotiated two-State solution, in line with relevant Security Council resolutions and international law.

We have entered the age of clean energy. Renewables are now the cheapest, fastest and safest source of new electricity almost everywhere.

Investors know it: last year, two trillion US dollars flowed into clean energy – nearly twice as much as into fossil fuels.

Yet some fossil fuel interests remain hell-bent on slowing progress. The world’s addiction to fossil fuels is one of the greatest threats to global stability and prosperity.

We face a choice: Design the transition together – or stumble into it through crisis and chaos. That’s why I am calling for a dedicated global platform to deliver a global transition plan away from fossil fuels.

This platform must bring together producers and consumers, developed and developing countries, public and private financial institutions and civil society.
The shift to renewable energy must be fair, orderly, affordable, and aligned with 1.5°C – protecting workers and communities, and connecting hundreds of millions of people to modern energy services.

Together, let’s make the clean energy transition fair, affordable & unstoppable.

Female genital mutilation violates the universal human rights to life, health and bodily integrity and causes lasting harm to over 230 million women and girls worldwide.

To end this injustice once and for all we need sustained political commitment and sustained investment. Governments, civil society, health workers, and traditional and religious leaders all have a role to play.

The United Nations is working on prevention and advocacy, ensuring that survivors have access to care, and empowering women and girls through education, employment, and leadership opportunities.

Let’s renew our promise to protect the rights of women and girls everywhere, and ensure that they can live free from violence and fear.

GDP tells us the cost of everything, and the value of nothing.

The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is failing to sufficiently address the environmental and social concerns of our world.

Our economic models and measurements overlook many aspects that sustain life and contribute to human well-being, while placing disproportionate value on activities that deplete the planet:

When we destroy a forest, we are creating GDP.
When we overfish, we are creating GDP.

We must place true value on the environment and go beyond GDP as a measure of human progress and well-being – now and in the future.

Done right, AI can benefit everyone.

It can accelerate breakthroughs in medicine, expand learning opportunities, strengthen food security, bolster climate action and disaster preparedness, and improve access to vital public services.

But it can also deepen inequality, amplify bias, and fuel harm.

The future of AI cannot be decided by a handful of countries or left to the whims of a few billionaires.

AI must belong to everyone.

AI must be accessible to everyone.

AI must benefit everyone.

AI must be safe for everyone.

Let’s build AI for everyone – with dignity as the default setting.

The members of the new Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence have been appointed for a three-year term by the @‌UnitedNations General Assembly.

We now have a multidisciplinary group of leading AI experts from across the globe, geographically diverse and gender-balanced, who will provide independent and impartial assessments of AI’s opportunities, risks and impacts.

In a world where AI is racing ahead, this Panel will provide what’s been missing – rigorous, independent scientific insight that enables all countries to engage on an equal footing, regardless of their technological capacity.

The Olympics and Paralympics are a beacon of hope, a celebration of human potential, teamwork, fair play and mutual respect.

The Games remind us what a united world can be and what humanity can achieve when we strive for our very best.

I call on all parties to conflict to honour the Olympic Truce.

The only struggle between nations should be on the sports field, not the battlefield.
