I see it all the time. 

Someone gets hired on a contract basis.

They go radio silence on LinkedIn until a few weeks when their contract ends. 

They think that the contract will get extended, but they rarely do. 

They stop interacting with their network and looking for other job opportunities. 

Job searching is like a game of chess or pool.

You have to keep lining up the next move and shots. 

Reviving a dormant network and list of companies is difficult.

Not to mention if your LinkedIn Profile and Resume have not been updated in months, you are nothing more than a stale piece of bread. 

There are no gaurantees in any type of role. 

Mass layoffs are continuing. Hiring is still slow as molasses and will only get worse. The job market landscape is dramatically shifting.

To reduce time out of work, especially between contracts if gigs is what you seek, keeping your network active and continuing to find companies that are hiring and researching them is imperative.

Let’s be absolutely real.

There will be winners and losers.

Class society will prevail. There will be rich and poor. 

Not everyone is going to be able to continue in their career paths. 

Those who are flexible, adaptable, and willing to sacrifice will survive.

Those who are living a pipe dream that the job market will swing back in their favor risk becoming homeless and losing all their financial foundation. 

Holding out to get your same job and salary is a risk. 

It is brutal out there for most #JobSeekers.

I get it. I have struggled through 17 job markets over my 28-year career in IT. 8 layoffs, 6 resignations, and 3 terminations. 

What has worked for me includes the following:

Change Management in Project Management: Or, How to Herd Cats Professionally

Change management in project management is the art of moving people from “this is how we’ve always done it” to “okay, fine, this actually works.” On paper, it sounds simple. In reality, it’s a delicate dance involving expectations, emotions, and at least one stakeholder who replies “let’s circle back” to everything.

One of the biggest challenges is stakeholder expectation management. Stakeholders often expect change to be instant, painless, and somehow require zero disruption to timelines or budgets. They want innovation, but only if it behaves exactly like the old process. Effective project managers know this means setting clear expectations early, communicating often, and gently reminding everyone that transformation is not a software update—it’s a process.

Then there’s the classic obstacle: unwillingness to change. Humans are creatures of habit, and new workflows are often met with skepticism, resistance, or passive-aggressive compliance. This isn’t defiance; it’s fear of the unknown wrapped in comfort with the familiar.

That’s why teaching the benefits of new workflows is imperative. Change doesn’t stick because it’s mandated—it sticks because people understand how it makes their work easier, faster, or less painful. When teams see the “why,” adoption shifts from forced participation to genuine buy-in.

Successful change management isn’t about forcing transformation. It’s about guiding people through it with clarity, empathy, and just enough patience to smile while explaining the same benefit for the fifth time. Because in project management, change isn’t the enemy—poorly managed change is.
