The healthiest thing my friend did all year?
She ate a pizza without tracking it.
And cried the entire time.

She’d been tracking macros since she was 18.

Spent 3 years believing carbs were poison.
Perfect eater on the outside.
Miserable on the inside.

2 years ago, a doctor said 6 words that stopped time:

"There are cysts in his brain."

And I froze in this examination room under all the fake white light.

I was already working 60-hour weeks, broke, exhausted, barely present for Anton & Hannah.

And now this.

On the screen, they looked like white stains, a little bit foggy.

It shattered everything I thought I knew.
I couldn't keep living like this.

Then Oliver came into the world.

The medical guidelines your doctor follows aren't based on science.

They're based on who paid the most.

After 10 years in research I've seen what gets buried and why.

𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀

A drug can show "significant results" but only improve outcomes by 2%.

That's publishable + marketable.
But meaningful? Not always.

We celebrate p-values under 0.05 like they're magic.
But we forget to ask: does this actually matter?

Families cling to these numbers.
Doctors recite them like scripture.

Insurance companies deny coverage based on what the statistics "prove."

𝟮. 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲

Industry funding shapes what gets studied and what gets recommended + companies with the deepest pockets fund research that supports their products.

That research becomes the foundation for clinical guidelines ...

The pharma rep buying lunch for your doctor's office?
They're there because it works.

Even small gifts influence prescribing patterns.
Your doctor probably doesn't realize it.
But the system is designed that way.

𝟯. 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Coffee prevents cancer.
Coffee causes cancer.
Both studies exist.

Both are peer-reviewed + get headlines.
This isn't about bad science.
It's about complexity.

Human biology doesn't fit into clean narratives.

But it's also about incentives.
Negative results don't get published.
And failed trials get buried and you never see them.

The studies that make it to your doctor's desk are the ones someone wanted you to see.

Read beyond the abstract + question the funding.
Remember that one study is never the full story.
But someone chose which data to show you.

I spent 2+ years on my systematic review.

It changed how I see "study shows" posts.

Most people have no idea what goes into scientific evidence:

A systematic review isn't just reading papers.
It's a rigorous protocol where you:

• Search every major database systematically
• Screen thousands of titles and abstracts
• Grade the overall quality of evidence
• Assess bias in every included study
• Extract data using validated tools

We started with 2539 papers.
After screening, only 8 met our criteria.

That's 0.31 %.
Eight studies ... out of 2539.

That number still shocks me.
That experience rewired my brain.

And now I see or even hear it everywhere:

Preliminary findings treated as final proof.
Industry money shaping conclusions.
Data twisted to fit agendas.
Results stripped of nuance.
Biased methods ignored.

I used to scroll past this stuff.
Now it makes me angry.

The context that matters most?
... all gone.

When you see "research proves" online, ask:

• Does it align with the broader evidence base?
• Is this one study or a synthesis of evidence?
• What was the sample size and population?

Quality of evidence matters more than a catchy headline you're hooked on (and want to believe in).

A single study is a data point.
A systematic review is the full picture.

Next time you see a viral health claim, pause.
Look for systematic reviews or meta-analyses.
Check if major health organizations support it.

Because believing everything you read isn't open-minded ... it's lazy.

15 years studying nutrition. Still eating cartoon cereal on my kitchen floor at 9 pm, one ear listening for the kids and blaming myself for being so weak.

I'd been solving the wrong problem and asking even worse questions.

Not what to eat, but why I couldn't stop.

I started paying attention to what happened before the cravings hit. Not the theory I'd studied. The actual patterns playing out in front of me.

• When I got 8 hours of sleep, I didn't crash at 2 pm and need three cookies

• When I ate more protein at lunch, I stopped thinking about all the sh*t snacks an hour later

• When I solved a conflict with my husband, the chocolate didn't become my best friend

Each time it was my body trying to tell me something and me responding with the wrong solution.

Food wasn't the problem.
It was the messenger.

I learned which foods actually kept me full past 90 minutes. Which ones left me hungry again too soon.

The changes were slow.
So slow I barely noticed them happening.

But somewhere in the middle of it all, I stopped forcing what I thought my body should want and started noticing what it actually asked for.

Once I started listening instead of controlling, my body began asking for different things.

These days I wake up at 6 am to swim.
I used to hate swimming.
Now I go 3 times/week.

Because something about the cold water and how my body feels after makes sense: Tired but in a good way + present and alive for the day to just GO FOR IT

Swimming became proof I could finally hear what my body was saying. Not control it like a maniak. But to listen to it like a friend.
