I lead the jobs and career development team for LinkedIn News. My role is to create, cultivate, curate, and circulate knowledge that will help LinkedIn's members — and people who should be members — get hired and get ahead. You will likely encounter my work through my Get Hired and Get Ahead franchises that include newsletters, a podcast, notifications, and more. My team extends and elevates that work through their own focuses, including generation-specific content and a focus on personal development. They are also where I hope to have the biggest impact, helping them grow their careers and lives. 

What I do is built upon what I've done, including reporting on the White House, Congress, health care policy, and the science of medicine during my more than seven years at Reuters. I also spent several years with the Society of Professional Journalists, updating the journalism industry's most used Code of Ethics and leading the ethics committee for four years. Then, of course, I've worn a few different hats here at LinkedIn.

The skills required to do our jobs are evolving fast — and employers are paying attention. Nearly half of recruiters on LinkedIn now use skills data to search for applicants. Employers are looking less at titles and degrees and more at what you can actually do.

How to Use LinkedIn's Skills on the Rise List to Get Hired

Your resume isn't your autobiography. It's a marketing tool.

That distinction matters more than you think. Career consultant and resume expert Jenny Foss joined me for an exclusive conversation for LinkedIn Premium subscribers (#WatchWithPremium) to break down what actually works when it comes to writing a resume that lands interviews.

A few things to take away from our chat:

✍️ Tailor (don't rewrite) your resume for each job. Make it easy for the person reading it to connect the dots. 
🤖 Use AI to help but don't hand it the keys. The best resumes come from a partnership between you and the technology. 
📅 Address career gaps unapologetically and briefly. Gaps are normal.  
🧑‍💻 Stay current on technology — especially if you've been in the workforce for some time. It's one of the best things you can do to fight ageism.

Your cover letter might never get read. Your resume summary will.

That's not a knock on cover letters. I've written about when they're worth your time, such as when you're changing careers or your work in a creative field. But, if you want a guaranteed shot at setting the tone before a recruiter or hiring manager reads a single bullet point on your #resume, a strong #summary is your best tool.

A few things to keep in mind when writing yours:

⭐️ Lead with what you bring, not what you want. Hiring managers aren't reading your resume to help you grow. They're reading it to solve a problem.

🪡 Tailor it every time — but you don't have to start from scratch. Pull the language from the job description and adjust strategically.

✂️ Cut the buzzwords. Everyone is "dynamic," "passionate" and "results-oriented" these days. The words have lost all meaning.

🔗 Connect your past to their future. A good summary doesn't just describe you. It makes the rest of your resume feel inevitable.

Should you include a #coverletter as part of your application?

Career coach Eliana Goldstein and I discussed this on the latest episode of #GetHired Hotline. While we disagreed a bit (you can see below) there are some universal takeaways to help guide you:

▶️ Include a cover letter if the employer asks for one.
▶️ Recruiters will likely skip your cover letter.
▶️ Hiring managers outside of technical fields — like engineering — will be more inclined to read cover letters.
▶️ Cover letters may be worth your time to explain your geniune interest in a role, a #careerchange or #pivot, #careerbreak or #careergap or another unique situation.
▶️ Understand that your cover letter may not be read.
▶️ Always focus on a strong resume summary over a cover letter.

🧐 Which skill surprised you most?

Here’s how to avoid losing an argument with me —and many people — when using #AI:

Something I’ve noticed over the past few months is that, when pressed for sources of information, people say they’re just telling me what “AI said.” In my mind, it’s the elevated version of “it’s what they’re saying online.” Who’s they? Where online?

Don’t be one of these people!

Generative AI is an amazing technology. I use it every day. Yet, it’s not without faults or risks. Also, not all AI technology is created equally. 

Here’s what to do:

1.) Ask your AI bot of choice your question. 

2.) Read the response, but dig deeper. Look at the sources! The AI is doing the hard work for you.

3.) Find the relevant source for the specific datum or piece of information you want. Is it reputable or legit?

4.) Tell me that I’m wrong and you brought receipts!

5.) You win (or I keep arguing). 

Why is this important? First, most people aren’t going to accept “AI told me” as an answer. Second, you don’t know where AI is getting the information unless you dig just a bit deeper. Third, you end up just being a conduit of questionable information if you don’t look at the sources. Fourth, you learn something and I learn something if you find a solid piece of evidence showing that you’re right. 

Be a worthy opponent in arguments. Check your sources.

What does it mean when employers say they're laying people off because of #AI?

Here is a really smart piece by HR Dive's Kristen Doerer, describing the fact that AI isn't replacing workers — yet. Instead, employers laid off workers to invest that money in AI technology.

While not the smartest strategy, a person can understand how organizations get to that decision: 

➕ Payroll/talent is the biggest cost to a company.
➕ AI requires significant upfront investment.
➕ Return on investment in AI takes time to realize.
🟰 Employers cut their biggest costs and invest in technology, hoping they have enough cash to carry them until they see a return on their AI investments.

The explanation does not negate the pain caused by layoffs, but it's valuable context when we see headlines or press releases linking AI to reductions in workforces.
