Last week, one of my clients inside the 8-Week Accelerator asked me a question that caught me off guard.

I had never heard it in 2 years helping scientists move to Pharma.

“Do you know anyone who regretted making the transition?”

I paused.

Thought about it carefully.

Then answered:
“No. I’ve never heard that.”

I’ve also never heard anyone say:
“I wish I had done it later.”

He looked relieved.

After the call, I wanted to double-check my perception.

So, I went looking for data.

That’s when I found this Nature article.

It shows significantly higher job satisfaction among scientists in industry compared to academia.

👉🏻 There’s no right or wrong path.

The right path is the one aligned with who you are and what you want.

But if you’re in academia, chances are you’re mostly hearing one side of the story.

Whatever you decide, make it an informed decision.

Everyone wants experience.

Nobody wants to give it.

There are thousands of people with skills, knowledge and the motivation to make a positive impact.

A Senior Scientist in my Accelerator landed an interview at MSD after just 3 weeks in the program.

3 weeks.

He is an MD, PhD.

But he had never had a Big Pharma interview before. 

He didn’t suddenly become more competent.

And the market didn’t change.

What changed is how he positioned himself.

He stopped describing what he was doing in academia.

He started communicating how that translates to pharma.

He implemented immediately what he learned.

That’s what makes the difference.

If you’re applying and not hearing back, it’s not about working harder.

It’s about translating better.

Do that properly, and the market will respond.

Fast.

Today I’m grateful for a silent driver of many successful pharma transitions.

There’s a major difference between being an academic life science postdoc and a Pharma R&D scientist.
 
In academia, you’re trained to go deep.
 
In industry, you’re expected to go broad and fast.
 
Most postdocs believe Pharma R&D is about running experiments.
 
It’s not.
 
It’s about making decisions based on incomplete evidence.
 
One of the biggest shifts I see in PhDs who transition successfully is this:
 
They stop positioning themselves as technical executors.
 
And start positioning themselves as scientific decision-support profiles.
 
That means being able to:
→ Rapidly synthesize literature
→ Separate consensus from controversy
→ Summarize implications for next steps
 
Not in 3 months.
 
In 30 minutes.

One of my clients works in clinical trials in a hospital.

2 weeks ago, she was at a hospital.

But not for work.

She was there as a patient, waiting between routine exams.

When she was in the cafeteria, 2 MSLs showed up.

They were waiting to meet a doctor.

She took the opportunity to introduce herself.

They discovered they had done their PhDs in the same building.

She asked them about their job, and they clarified her doubts.

Then, they connected on LinkedIn.

A few days later, the MSLs shared open roles at their company.

That wasn’t luck.

It was attitude.

Networking is the most effective way to land roles in pharma.

Sometimes you need to take opportunities as they show up.

That mindset goes a long way.

January 2019: postdoc in academia.

March 2019: give up my aspiration to move to Pharma R&D after the nth final-stage rejection.

June 2019: Started 1st Biotech role in manufacturing the day after turning 30.

October 2019: realized it wasn’t my way and panicked.

December 2019: Landed dream role in Pharma R&D.

That’s what this transition is about.

It’s not a linear process.

It’s a roller coaster of emotions.

Doing it alone was mentally draining.

It slowly made me question myself.

If you’re in the middle of this right now, you know this feeling.

Not because you’re not capable. But because when you’re inside the storm, you can’t see the pattern.

I had to figure everything out the hard way:

Positioning. Strategy. Timing. How to navigate rejection without internalizing it.

Doing this alone is no longer the only option.

2 weeks ago, I had a 1:1 session with a PhD from Spain.

8 years' experience in preclinical research.

4 years in clinical trials.

Yet his pharma applications were going nowhere.

He decided to reach out and work with me.

5 minutes into our first session we got to the real issue.

He wasn’t targeting the right roles.

We explored a different area that fits him much better.

One shift.

His confidence changed instantly.

His mindset too.

Now he’s talking about this new area with everyone.

And he had never considered it before.

Despite 12 years of experience.

That’s what I find most fulfilling in my work.

From the outside, people can see your blind spots.

Often, they’re simple.

But they’re called “blind spots” for a reason.

Job search = Drug discovery.

8 times out of 10 the problem is the target.

If you’ve been applying to pharma for months without hearing back.

Despite years of experience.

You’re probably targeting the wrong roles.

Time to change that.

9/10 Scientists prepare for interviews by studying the company.

Only 1/10 study the products.

Last week, during a mock interview with one of my PhD clients, I asked:

“Do you know any of our products?”

Silence.

My client couldn’t name a single one.

In Pharma, that’s a red flag.

I made the exact same mistake once.

It cost me a €96,000/year role in 2018.

Multiply that by 8 years and you know how expensive that mistake was.

If you don’t know what they’re building

how can you show them how you fit?

When you reference even just one:
→ Marketed product  
→ Therapeutic area shift  
→ Asset in the R&D pipeline  

You signal intention.

You show you didn’t apply randomly.

They see you already picture yourself there.

Most candidates fail interviews before they even start.

They prepare only for technical questions.

If you’re preparing for interviews, don’t just research the company.

Research what they put into patients.

That’s their mission.

Now you know what yours is.

Here’s 1 painful mistake that keeps strong candidates stuck in interview limbo.

Even when they come across well.

👉🏻 They keep it open-ended.

2 weeks ago, during a mock interview inside my 8-Week Accelerator, I closed with:

“We will let you know.”

My client replied:

“Thank you for the opportunity.”

And that was it.

That’s how you get ghosted.

Interviews are not academic seminars.

They’re decision-making processes.

If you don’t ask:
→ What’s the timeline?
→ What are the next steps?
→ Is there anything you’d like me to clarify?

You leave the process drifting.

And drifting processes rarely end in offers.

What separates strong candidates from those getting hired is how they close.

In this market, being a strong candidate isn’t enough.

Clarity signals maturity.

And maturity converts.

After Tuesday’s masterclass, one thing became very clear:
 
Most postdocs don’t lack competence.
 
They lack focus.
 
If you’re serious about transitioning into Pharma or Biotech, your time becomes your most valuable asset.
 
You can’t afford to:
→ Read 200 papers hoping something “clicks”
→ Spend hours trying to extract one insight
→ Save endless PDFs you’ll never revisit
 
In industry, speed and clarity matter.
 
That’s why I recently started using Consensus.

Use it strategically

Not paying attention to Job Descriptions (JD) is costing you a 15-30% salary increase.

You should read them as carefully as you read the latest Nature paper. 

90% of Scientist JDs say:
→ “Ability to design, execute, and analyze experiments”

100% wet lab PhDs can do that as brushing their teeth.

Yet 90% of them don’t say it in the CV.

Instead, they write:
→ PhD with expertise in […]
→ Extensive background in […]
→ Molecular Biologist passionate about […]

Here’s the thing:

If something appears in the first lines of a JD

It means IT IS VALUED.

Don’t take it for granted.

Most postdocs do.

And that’s exactly where they lose.

JDs are the cheat code for your application.

If you know how to use them.

Last year, I visited Australia.

As we stood before the Blue Mountains, something happened that still makes me smile.

Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to join P2P virtual symposium from NYU Grossman School of Medicine as a career coach.

It was a great opportunity to engage with PhD students, Postdocs & Senior Scientists from across the US.

We talked about industry transitions and the EU job market.

Here are 3 questions that stuck with me + 3 key takeaways:

1. What’s the best time to start preparing for the industry transition?

The best time was probably 2 years ago.

The 2nd best time is now.

Start.

2. Is doing a postdoc necessary to move to Pharma?

Nothing is necessary.

(Some of the more senior people laughed and said “so true”; I see you!)

A lot of things are helpful, but none is strictly necessary.

Here’s the shift:

❌ It’s not about what’s necessary

✅ It’s about what you want to do.

Once you realize that, the next step is figuring out how to get there.

3. How can we feel ready for a pharma interview?

You don’t have to feel ready.

If you wait until you feel ready, you’ll wait forever.

School time is over.

Now it’s time to go out there and do.

Did you feel ready when you started your PhD?

If you answer yes, I’d be suspicious of you, like I would be of someone who perfectly nailed their first ever western blot ; )

So many meaningful conversations.

So much to learn, and so much to share.
