National Science Foundation (NSF)

•	Widening Implementation & Demonstration of Evidence-Based Reforms (WIDER) is a project funded by the National Science Foundation, whose chief goal is to transform universities into supportive environments for STEM faculty members, to substantially increase their use of evidence-based teaching and learning practices. I assisted Dr. James Pembridge in collecting footage of lectures throughout several engineering class sessions, and analyzed the data in Microsoft Excel to identify and describe characteristics of evidence-based learning observed during the class. By analyzing and identifying which methods of evidence-based learning were actually being utilized during classroom instruction, we were able to advise instructors on how to use these methods more effectively, or advise them on which methods to implement more frequently, to help improve student learning.

Project WIDER

ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM RESEARCH PROJECT

•	Engineering Study Abroad opportunity working with leading researchers in Thessaloniki, Greece on the first known analog computer, used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses; dating back to 87 B.C. When turning the input gear of the device, researchers found that gears farther in the train were shearing off, presumably due to high torque. While in Greece, I manually completed a torque analysis of the 37 gear-long train to determine exactly how much torque was being produced at each interface. Upon returning to the United States, I designed a software program in Java to use the results and predict the outputs of the device digitally, so the researchers could test individual input gears and unique gear combinations of the device, and readily see how much torque would be produced on each gear in the train using varying inputs. As a result, researchers found that changing the input gear to the device produced less torque on the overall system; consequently, the model of the mechanism was modified, solving the issue with sheared gears.
