Everyone wants ‘wow factor’

No one can explain the ‘what.’..

A founder once told me he wanted one thing from the redesign:
“Give me a wow factor.”

So I asked:
“Wow… what?”

And he said the most honest sentence I’ve ever heard:
“I don’t know. Just… wow me.”

That was the whole requirement.

No users.
No goals.
No flows.

Just "wow"

So I did what every designer does in this situation:

I nodded politely,
died a little inside,
and opened FigJam to start the actual diagnosis.

Because here’s the truth founders never admit:

When a product owner says “We need a wow factor,”
what they really mean is:

“Something feels off but I can’t articulate it.”

-> The story is unclear.
-> The UX is confusing.
-> The path doesn’t make sense.
-> The product feels heavier than it should.

But “I can’t articulate the real issue” becomes “Add some wow.”

Spoiler: the wow wasn’t motion.
Wasn’t gradients.
Wasn’t the hero.

It was clarity.

We simplified the flow.
Reframed the value.
Removed the cognitive load.

And reduced the UI to the one thing the user actually needed.

He looked at it and said, “Wow.”

See?
Mission accomplished.

Forget the fireworks.
Fix the friction.
That’s the wow.

There’s one thing behind every good decision…
 
that no one talks about:

Your WHY.

And for a long time… I didn’t have one.

Because I spent years perfecting pixels

I see this every day in SaaS. And here’s the wild part:

Most of them don’t need MORE.
They need less — a lot less.

Here’s the part founders don’t hear enough:

Teams spend months building AI features…

- hierarchy never matched the customer journey
- onboarding asks for effort before delivering value

And here’s the kicker:

AI doesn’t hide these problems.
It magnifies them.

Because intelligence can’t compensate for a weak foundation:

unclear value → faster churn
messy flows → faster confusion
inconsistent patterns → faster mistrust
bloated UI → faster overwhelm

AI makes everything louder — especially the parts you haven’t fixed.

So if you want AI to be a competitive advantage, 
here’s what your product actually needs first:

1️⃣ A value prop users “get” instantly.
If the message isn’t immediate, AI won’t save it.

2️⃣ A clean path to the first meaningful win.
AI is not the first win. Solving a real problem quickly is.

3️⃣ Navigation that matches the user’s mental model.
When your structure fights how people think, no AI feature can save the flow.

4️⃣ A system, not a collection of screens.
Consistency is what makes AI useful — it can’t operate on chaos.

5️⃣ A product driven by decisions, not additions.
Growth comes from removing friction, not stacking more features on top.

Here’s the truth nobody likes to say out loud:

AI is not the accelerator.
Clarity is.

AI only becomes a multiplier after the foundation is simple, 
intuitive, 
and aligned with how customers think.

Fix the UX first, and AI becomes a superpower.

Letting everyone add ‘just one more thing’...

Look — alignment sounds great… 
until it kills your entire product.

Not because teams disagree…

We’ve all been there.

“Okay… but if I say no, someone’s going to be annoyed.”

Yeah.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

UX doesn’t collapse from bad ideas.

If you want progress instead of delays, do this:

Pick the goal, not every preference.

2️⃣ Someone owns the final call
One decider = momentum.

I know it’s tempting to keep polishing.

Ever notice how some days disappear…

and you can’t explain where the time went?

You weren’t lazy.

At the end of the day, I wasn’t tired — I was scattered.

But the truth?
I needed time-blocking.

And it changed everything about how I work.

Here’s what I learned:

🔹 Time expands to whatever you give it.
No boundaries?
Everything becomes urgent.

🔹 Clarity beats motivation.
Plan the day.
Execute without thinking.

🔹 One 90-minute block > 6 scattered hours.

Switching costs everything.

As a product designer, I do my best thinking in deep, uninterrupted work.

My approach is simple:

• One block for admin
• One block for creative thinking
• One 90-minute block for deep work
• Buffer zones so the day actually breathes
• Everything else becomes optional, not urgent

Time-blocking isn’t about rigidity.
It’s about protecting the version of you who wants to grow.

Block it.
Protect it.
Treat it like something expensive.

Because it is.

Some structure? Sure.

But let’s not confuse presence with performance.

For many of us, remote work isn’t a perk—
it’s a lifeline for deep work.

Going fully remote changed everything—
More clarity. 
Less burnout. 
Work I was proud of.

And that energy?

It flowed straight into my results—
Happier clients. 
Stronger strategy. 
Better outcomes.

Because when you design from stillness,
you make sharper decisions.
You notice details others miss.

You create experiences that feel effortless—
not because they were easy,
but because they were crafted from flow, not force.

Remote work isn’t just “flexibility.”
It’s fuel.

For creativity.
For focus.
For work that moves people.

Ever had a moment that made you realize…

you’re not as young as you thought?

Mine was explaining a floppy disk…
to a developer.

I just came back from a design review…

A B2B SaaS product.
Enterprise. 
Millions in revenue.

And right there on the main action bar:
💾 A literal floppy disk icon.
In 2025.

So I gently asked:

“Have you considered switching this to a bookmark?
It’s modern, familiar, and instantly recognized.”
The room froze.

One engineer squints at the screen and goes:

“But the floppy is universal…”
Universal for who, exactly?
Everyone born before WiFi?

I ran a quick test later:

Anyone under 25 stared at it like it was ancient pottery.
But every single one recognized the bookmark in 0.1 seconds.

The funniest part?

Once we swapped it, the whole interface suddenly felt modern.

Sometimes the biggest UX improvements aren’t new features.
They’re removing old metaphors that silently age your product.

If you’re a founder or PM, here’s the truth:

- Modern UX isn’t about trends.
- Most products look older than they are.
- Because no one questions the tiny stuff.

And when something looks outdated?
Users assume everything else is too.

Design speaks before words do.
It says “modern” or “stuck in 1998.”

And sometimes…

one tiny micro-pattern
(one icon!)
can change the entire perception.

Make your product feel current — not nostalgic.

One of the biggest UX wins in history didn’t come from a redesign.

It came from…
removing one button.

And the crazy part?

Everyone on the team thought the flow was “totally fine.”

A huge retailer kept losing customers at checkout.
Millions were abandoning their carts.

But nobody could explain why.

The checkout looked normal:

✔️Email
✔️Password
✔️Login
✔️Register

We've all seen it.
We've all used it.

It felt “standard,” which is why nobody questioned it.

But users hated it.

First-time buyers:
“I’m not here to create an account. I just want to buy something.”

Returning buyers:
“What email did I use?”
“Why won’t my password work?”
“Ugh… forget it.”

160,000 password resets a day.
75% never came back to finish the purchase.

Not because the product was bad.
Not because the price was wrong.
Not because the user changed their mind.

Because the UX was exhausting.

So the team tried something simple:

❌ They removed the Register button.
✅ Added a Continue button.
 
“You don’t need an account to buy. Create one later if you want.”

Result?
+45% more completed checkouts.
$300M in the first year.

All from one moment of friction people stopped questioning.
