I recently took a flight from NYC to Nashville.

No one in 1st class was reading a book.

No one in the economy was reading a book.

Yes, some people could've been reading an ebook on their phone or listening to an audiobook, but no one had a physical book (except for myself).

Is it just me or does it seem like fewer people read books on planes or even in public anymore?

"The Creative Way Forward"

Reading books is a literal life hack.

Researchers at Yale University found that:

+ People who read 30 mins a day were 20% less likely to die than those who didn't read.

+ Reading books had a significantly greater survival advantage than reading newspapers or magazines. 

Scientists believe that the longevity boost comes from the preservation of people’s mental powers into old age. 

It makes sense: the stronger their mind, the better able people were to live actively and independently, which should help to preserve their health.

So if you want to live longer, try this new longevity protocol and pick up a book today!

Are we in a Reading Recession?

A recent NYT article reports that from 2003 to 2023, the share of Americans who read for pleasure fell 40%!

Reading for pleasure has been declining around 3% every year for the past 20 years.

The authors of the study  suggest that the increased use of social media and other technology, as well as more time spent at work because of economic pressure, has lead to a decrease in reading.

Last week I flew to Toronto to cohost two author meetups with my good friend Jonathan Goodman.

Both meetups had a similar topic of conversation:

Authors make almost no money from selling books.

Traditional authors earn anywhere from $0.50 to $3 for every book they sell.

Even if you sell 10,000 books a year (which only 3.4% of books sell that many copies), you're essentially making minimum wage.

So authors HAVE to build a business around their book to support themselves.

That usually includes speaking at events, doing workshops for corporations, working as a professor, or selling some product or service that will cover their expenses while they work on their next book.

That's the reality of being an author in today's world.

You won't be spending all of your time reading and writing, but rather you're going to be spending a lot of time speaking, teaching, traveling, or selling some type of product to your audience.

So if you're thing about quitting your job to write a book, take some time to think about what time of business or service can you build around it. 

The most successful authors I've met all found a way to create a business behind their book, which gives them the freedom to focus on writing their next book instead of worrying how they'll pay their bills.
