A data scientist analyzed book reviews to find the most life-changing books–statistically.

Here are the most "life-changing" books by number of reviews:

He plotted the books by total number of reviews on the x-axis and the % of people who call them life-changing on the y-axis.

A few of the outliers included:

-"Autobiography of a Yogi"
-"Nonviolent Communication"
-"Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" 

And others.

One of the biggest outliers was "Remembering Wholeness" by Carol Tuttle. The book only had 79 reviews, but 19% of them called the book life-changing.

This weekend I had the chance to meet one of my biggest inspirations–the legendary Steven Pressfield.

Here's his story and why it's so inspiring:

Throughout his life, Steven worked a variety of jobs.

Ad copywriter, schoolteacher, tractor-trailer driver, bartender, mental hospital worker, fruit-picker, the list goes on.

But deep down, he knew he wanted to be a writer.

However, he struggled to make a living as an author. 

There were periods when he was homeless and living out of the back of his car.

But he didn't give up.

Steven published his first book "The Legend of Bagger Vance" at age 52!

That book was later turned into a movie directed by Robert Redford and starring Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Matt Damon. 

Steven has gone on to publish 20+ books (both fiction and nonfiction) including the now famous book “The War of Art.”

He’s 82 now yet still wakes up at 4am every day to workout and then write.

Absolute legend.

If you want to become an author or do any big creative project, I highly recommend reading his books, starting with "The War of Art" or "Turning Pro."

Last week I had a 2-hour lunch with the brilliant author and ghostwriter Tahl Raz.

Here are two insightful lessons I've learned from him.

For context, Tahl is the co-author of multiple bestselling books including:

- “Never Eat Alone” with Keith Ferrazzi
- “Million Dollar Weekend” with Noah Kagan
- “Never Split The Difference” with Christopher Voss

And has written many more incredible books. 

Now the lessons:

1) A Great Book Title Says The Opposite 

If you write a book and tell people to do something they already know, that book will fall flat.

BUT if you write a book that tells people to do the opposite of what most people say, that book will catch people's eyes and ears.

For example, most negotiation books tell you to might in the middle. But "Never Split The Difference" tells you to do the opposite.

Most business books tell you building a million dollar business takes decades. But "Million Dollar Weekend" tells you that you can do it in a weekend.

If you want to write a book that catches people's attention, think about what is the standard advice people give, and if the opposite is actually better and true. If so, you might have a bestselling book idea in your hands.

2) Spend 70% of Your Time Researching & 30% Writing

Most writers spend 30% of their time researching and then 70% of their time writing.

Tahl recommends people do the opposite.

Spend 70% of your time researching and then 30% of your time writing.

Befofe Tahl even starts writing a book, he'll spend an entire year or more just doing research.

For instance, he'll order the 25 most popular and relevant books in a category and read through them all, taking deep notes on each one.

Without great research, there's a ceiling to how great your book can be. The quality of your inputs determine the quality of your outputs.

You can be a master at writing, but if you have the same stories, stats, and studies, as other books in the market, you'll bore your reader.

Another perk of doing a ton of research is that you'll never start with a blank page. You'll have dozens of quotes, stories, and facts to choose from to start each chapter.

The more hard work you do upfront, the easier the rest of the book will be.

Ever wondered what books men like to reads vs what books women like to read? 

Here's what the data shows:

Researcher Mike Thelwall looked at 201,560 reviews on Goodreads to find gender differences in book preferences. 

The top 5 most read genres for men were:

1) Philosophy
2) Comics
3) Politics
4) Graphic novels
5) Sci-fi

The top 5 most read genres for women were:

1) Historical romance
2) Contemporary romance
3) Chick-lit
4) Paranormal romance
5) Romance

This might surprise some people, but romance is actually one of the biggest genres in all of publishing.

Over 33% of books sold in mass-market paperback format were romance novels. Romance novels generate over $1.44 billion in revenue, making romance the highest-earning genre of fiction.

This chart is from 2017 so it's a few years old but it's  fascinating to see the differences in which books men read vs which women read.

1) Listen to the audiobook and read the physical book or ebook at the same time to read faster, stay focused, and remember more of what you read.

2) While reading, don’t stop in the middle of a chapter. Make it a rule that you have to finish the chapter before putting the book down.

After meeting 100+ bestselling authors, here's one of the biggest lessons I've learned: 

Writing is a team sport, not a solo one.

Just because there's only one name on the cover, it doesn't that person did all the work.

99% of the time there were multiple people who helped the author.

Successful authors usually work with a book coach, a developmental editor, a line editor, a copy editor, a research-assistant, a fact-checker, and so on.

Even authors who get big traditional publisher deals hire an additional editor on their own dime because they know the more feedback they get, the better their book will become.

There is a well-known African proverb that says: "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together".

And that's true for the book world. 

If you want to create an amazing book, seek out help from experts who have helped others craft excellent books.

One book expert that I had the pleasure of meeting with recently is Blake Atwood.

Blake is a gifted editor and book coach who's worked with James Clear, Jefferson Fisher, Dr. Paul M. Conti, Dr. Shadé Zahrai, and many more authors.

So when I needed feedback on the first draft of my book, he was the first person I reached out to. 

We met in a coffee shop yesterday and the notes he had for my work were fantastic. He took my writing from good to great.

So if you want to take your book to the next level, don't try to do everything yourself. I highly recommend hiring an editor for your book (especially if you're self-publishing).

A good hack for finding an editor that fits your style is to pick up your favorite book, jump to the acknowledgement section, and look at who the author thanks for helping them write the book. Then Google search the names until you find their website.

A meta-analysis of 71 studies and 98,000+ people has confirmed what everyone's been feeling:

Consuming short-form content (TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) leads to a shorter attention span.

If you want a longer attention span, consume more long-form content. AKA read more books.
