We’re told AI can handle our most personal details safely. But once data is shared, deletion is almost impossible. Every click and consent box risks exposing the parts of our lives we can’t reset.  

On 7 January, OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Health, promising “purpose‑built encryption”. Yet it allows links to Apple Health and wellness apps via opt‑in integrations. Once those records move, control moves with them — away from the user.  

↳ Encryption in transit or at rest is not end‑to‑end privacy.  
↳ Consent isn’t protection when systems are opaque and oversight gaps remain.  

Before trusting a chatbot with medical history, we should ask: who ultimately benefits from our vulnerability?  

It’s time to treat health data as sacred, not another input field.

When hackers lose anonymity, the playing field finally levels.  

For years, cybercrime has thrived on hidden forums and untraceable pseudonyms. But now, the hunters are being hunted. A breach inside BreachForums has turned the mirror back on its users.  

On 9 January, an archive of 323,986 members’ emails and IP addresses was leaked by a figure calling themselves James. Resecurity confirmed the files as authentic, giving law enforcement a global map of real identities once thought untouchable.  

↳ We keep telling ourselves anonymity online is absolute.  
↳ It rarely is. The same data reuse and shortcuts that expose victims eventually expose criminals too.  

Time to rethink who really controls privacy—and how fragile it has become.

Leaders often assume vendor tools stop being their responsibility once the contract is signed.  
↳ That belief hides where control and risk actually sit.  

Spyware vendors like Intellexa claim they only supply technology to vetted clients.  
↳ Yet Jamf’s December 2024 research on Predator showed a centralised command system sending detailed error codes back to the vendor.  

That means attackers can rapidly fine‑tune failed spyware deployments while the vendor maintains oversight.  
When oversight looks like ownership, excuses about “limited visibility” no longer hold.  

The same pattern appears in business software. Firms buy platforms, assume autonomy, but leave diagnostic and usage visibility in someone else’s hands.  

What I’d fix:  
• Audit every supplier for hidden operational control, not just stated permissions.  
• Demand clarity on where your system data travels and who can analyse it.  
• Treat third‑party infrastructure as shared liability, not outsourced accountability.  
• Build conditions—like Jamf’s “hostile environment” approach—that weaken misuse.  

Better discipline over vendor relationships > Blind trust in vendor disclaimers.

Relying on old security habits once a patch drops is the mistake.  
↳ Attackers move faster than patch policies allow.  

Many teams wait for scheduled maintenance to update edge devices.  
They assume “critical” means important but not urgent.  
↳ In reality, the window from disclosure to exploit is often hours, not days.  

On 13 January, Fortinet disclosed CVE‑2025‑64155, a 9.4‑rated flaw in FortiSIEM.  
By the next day, Defused saw live attacks from at least three Chinese IP addresses.  
Within a week, about 15 groups were exploiting Horizon3’s proof‑of‑concept code almost verbatim.  

What I’d fix:  
• Stop batching updates; patch edge systems as soon as fixes land.  
• Treat published proof‑of‑concepts as active threats, not research.  
• Limit remote access to monitoring ports until verified safe.  
• Add honeypot visibility to see your own exposure sooner.
