After three decades in public relations and marketing, I've learned that the best stories aren't just told, they're strategically crafted to cut through noise and create genuine connection.

I specialize in crisis communication, reputation management, media relations, project management and brand narrative development, currently working in higher education (my professional first love). What sets me apart is blending traditional PR fundamentals with AI-powered tools, turning week-long projects into day-long solutions through automated research and streamlined workflows.

My expertise spans from corporate communication to creative storytelling. I ghostwrite for executives, guide emerging authors through indie publishing, and author the weekly Substack newsletter "All the Fits That's News"—covering everything from business strategy to the beautifully absurd parts of being human.

Since 2006, I've hosted numerous podcasts across multiple genres: "PR After Hours" (marketing/PR with a side of skepticism and mild snark, hold the jargon), "Mysterious Goings On" (creativity meets the writing life), a University of Central Missouri podcast, and I co-host a true crime show. Turns out the same storytelling principles apply whether you're fixing a brand crisis or unraveling a mystery.

As a speaker, I tackle crisis communication, reputation management, AI integration, writing and podcasting. My expertise has been featured on KCTV-5's Better Kansas City Show (2017–2023) and WHO-TV Des Moines' Hello Iowa! (2021-2023), numerous webinars and a few conference appearances. Kansas City Magazine named me "Best Local Author" in 2023 for my nine novels and two business books.

When not crafting communication strategies, I'm writing fiction, exploring historical sites (great for perspective on current "crises"), or acting like I know my way around the gym.

Many people think their time is more important than yours. On the road, that belief shows up as tailgating, intimidation, and a casual disregard for the lives of strangers. I see it every day on my commute.

I'm a veteran PR professional, expert in media relations, crisis communications planning, business development, content creation, e-publishing, podcasting, editing, and writing. I am frequently requested to evaluate a brand or organization's messaging and provide executive counsel on matters concerning communication. I've also produced and hosted podcasts since 2006, including PR After Hours, a business show, launched in 2020.

I'm a speaker and trainer on numerous subjects, including crisis communication planning, public relations, entrepreneurship, and writing. I have completed the President's Club coursework of the Sandler Training organization, as well as other leadership seminars including LeaderPoint and Disney Management Training Institute. Since 2017, I've been a regular contributor discussing social media on KCTV-5’s Better Kansas City Show. Since 2023, I’ve been a contributor to WHO-TV Des Moines “Hello Iowa!” show. My thoughts on the public relations profession have been quoted in two books.

In my spare time, I enjoy writing, kickboxing workouts, obstacle course running, and hiking.

Today’s Quick Signal looks at how politeness is sometimes used to avoid truth.

In the middle of this week’s snowstorm, when you're cooped up just enough for your mind to wander, you might start thinking about that book you’ve been meaning to write or the podcast you’ve been circling for years.

That impulse is usually a good sign.

Just know that once you act on it, you’ll attract an entire industry eager to sell you momentum before you’ve built any. Some of those offers can be more damaging than sliding into a snowy ditch professionally.

Most people think they know what happened in 2023. One Instagram post, massive boycott, company learns its lesson, right?

Wrong.

Here's what really killed Bud Light — and it wasn't what you think.

The Slow Decline Nobody Noticed:

By 2023, Bud Light had been bleeding market share for over a decade. They'd cut $300M+ from marketing budgets after a 2008 acquisition. Craft beers were exploding (breweries went from 2,000 to 10,000 between 2010-2020). Gen Z was drinking 20% less than Millennials at the same age.

The brand was already in trouble.

But leadership was obsessed with chasing new customers instead of keeping the ones they had.

The Fatal Mistake:

When that controversial partnership happened in April 2023, it wasn't the partnership itself that destroyed them.

It was how they responded.

They went silent. They fired people. They issued a non-apology that satisfied nobody. And in doing all that, they sent one clear message to their existing customer base:

We don't really want you anymore.

Sales dropped 36% in three weeks. Customers switched to Coors Light and Miller Lite — both up 8-15% — and never came back.

The Real Lesson:

I've seen versions of this pattern dozens of times (though never at this scale). Companies get so focused on growth, new markets, and "evolving their brand" that they forget the people who already love them.

Your existing customers aren't a given. They're a gift.

And when you make them feel like you'd prefer different customers, they'll find a company that actually wants them.

The mission of your company isn't to impress your marketing team or chase trends. It's to delight the customers you already have — consistently, reliably, year after year.

That's hard to do for 20+ years. But the companies that pull it off? In-N-Out, Chick-fil-A, Costco — they print money.

The ones that take their customers for granted? Check the chart.
