I didn’t figure out U.S. permanent residency by accident.

Someone showed me the map.

3 years ago, I met a graduate student at a conference and asked:
“What are your plans after graduation?”

Her answer wasn’t vague. 

She was precise:
- A residency strategy
- A self-petition plan 
- An employer pathway
- Legal guidance
- A timeline

She wasn’t guessing. She was executing.

She self-petitioned and also secured an employer sponsor.

I followed the same framework.

Results?
- Self-petition approved in under 1 year
- Green cards in under 2 years for my family

Not luck and not prayer alone.

Strategy.

Most people think outcomes are based on luck.

But Proverbs 24 says something different.
    "Any enterprise is built by wise planning,
     becomes strong through common sense,
     and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts."
 (Proverbs 24:3-4 TLB)

You can’t control:
 – When policy changes
 – Who would give you an offer
 – How long the process takes

But you can always control your planning.

You can always control your preparation.

If you want a better outcome, don’t start with hustle.

Start with wisdom instead
-  Plan wisely
-  Prepare intentionally
-  Move forward in confidence

You don’t need certainty to start.

You just need a plan built on principles.

If you want 2026 to be different, 
you must be willing to go all in, 
push past inertia, 
and stay committed long enough 
for results to show up.

Student: “I wish I knew all this 3 years ago.”

 Me: “I wish I did too. Would’ve saved me 2 years of unnecessary struggle.”

But here’s the truth I’ve come to realize:

The ‘impossibles’ we attach to career growth are rarely about ability.

They’re often about ignorance.

Ignorance of:
- What’s actually available to us
- How groupthink clouds our decisions
- The source documents that tell us what’s true (but we never read)
- The truth buried under 60-second clips and oversimplified advice

I made a decision a while ago to combat that ignorance by:
- Being intentional about my environment
- Refusing to outsource thinking to “what most people do”
- Reading source documents instead of summaries
- Staying in rooms where people already have what I’m building

We all fall short in different areas: career, health, wealth, relationships.

But at some point, ignorance becomes a choice.

If you’ve chosen to stay unaware, let it be intentional  and not accidental.

My mum’s commitment to growth changed the trajectory of our entire family.

She was a single mother with only a secretarial studies education.

We started in Nigeria in what’s called a "face-to-face".
(A face-to-face building is a long building where people live in small rooms on both sides of a hallway and share bathrooms and kitchens.)

Then we moved to a 3-bed apartment.

Then another 3-bed in a 9 storey building.

Then one day she owned her own house.

The real transformation wasn’t the houses but her.

She kept studying, earning certifications and upgrading herself.

Promotion by promotion, she rose from junior staff to senior staff.

In 2025, she received an honorary PhD alongside the taught PhD she had earned in earlier years.

Sometimes I ask myself where would my siblings and I be today if she had stopped growing?

Your personal commitment to growth never affects only you.

It changes:
 - your children’s future
 - your family’s ceiling
 - generations you may never meet

Stay committed to growth, more lives than you realize depend on it.

Alex Hormozi's thoughts never stop stirring something in me.

This is one of them and it is so so true.

If we would be the person we want to be, we must get to the point where we have no choice but become that person.

Until we have no alternative we would keep making excuses. 

What excuse is still giving you an escape route?

I’ve met two kinds of people in every country, every company, every industry.

"Group 1:
“I’m trying. It’s just not the right time.”

Group 2:
“I’ll figure it out.”

One group never finds the right time, the other make the time right.

If you are serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way.

Otherwise, you’ll find an excuse.

One group negotiates with their limitations.

The other reorganizes their life around the goal.

Your future is not decided by what you want.

It’s decided by what you’re willing to rearrange your life for.

Being the smartest in the room comes with hidden costs:

- You stop asking questions
- You stop upgrading your standards
- You start mistaking familiarity for mastery

If you’re always the smartest in the room, you’re in the wrong environment.

The rooms that change your life are the ones where:
 - You listen more than you talk.
 - You learn more than you perform.
 - You grow more than you impress.

Don’t optimize for comfort, optimize for growth.

It’s not luck.

Not intelligence.

Not even GPA.

It’s strategy.

Long-term immigration planning isn’t taught in school, but it determines how soon you can build the life you came for.

The question I asked a stranger that gave my family permanent residency in the U.S.

She wasn’t an immigration lawyer. She wasn’t even a consultant.

She was just a grad student, presenting her research at a poster session.

Yet when I asked her, “What are your plans after graduation?” she didn’t flinch.

She had already done the work most people avoid:
- Found the right academic program as an international student
- Built a strong case for a self-petitioned green card
- Connected with lawyers and consultants
- Joined communities built around the same goal: residency

Within a year of that conversation:
- I filed my own self-petition
- Got approved
- And 18 months later, received green cards for myself and my family.

That one conversation changed everything.

In 2026, let it not be said of you that you never found out.

The U.S. is putting a cap on ambition literally.

Starting July 2026, grad students won’t be able to borrow more than $257,500 total from federal loans.

Parents borrowing on behalf of their kids is also capped.

Fields like nursing and accounting are being reclassified meaning less access to aid.

This is a signal.

We’re entering an era where universities will be held accountable for graduate outcomes, not just degrees. 

If students don’t earn enough post-grad, schools could lose federal funding.

Some are even calling for colleges to co-sign loans, paying a % back if their graduates default. Imagine that.

What is all these telling us:
- You can no longer charge Ivy League prices for Craigslist outcomes.
- Whether you’re a student, parent, or educator the future of education is changing.
- Evaluate your graduate program based on potential and past outcomes for grads.

Most international graduate students preparing  H-1B lottery in 2026 make this mistake.

They think H1-B is just one single path.

There are two completely different paths hiding under the same name.

H1-B capped & H1-B cap-exempt.
 
Capped H1-B:
 • Limited capped H-1B spots
 • Hundreds of thousands of applicants
 • One filing window per year

That’s not a plan. That’s a gamble.

Cap-exempt H1-B:
 • Has no lottery
 • Can be filed any month
 • Gives you real U.S. work experience
 • Lets you switch to the lottery later from a stronger position

Cap-exempt employers include:
 • Universities
 • University-affiliated hospitals
 • Nonprofit research institutions
 • Certain education and scientific nonprofits

If they sponsor you, timing stops being your biggest enemy.

And no, this isn’t just for STEM.

Cap-exempt roles exist across:
 • Research and data
 • Program and operations
 • Policy and evaluation
 • Academic services
 • Health informatics
 • AI and analytics labs

The degree matters less than how the role is structured.

Here’s the mindset shift every 2026 graduate needs:
- Waiting for the lottery keeps you reactive.
- Cap-exempt keeps you in control.
- Time builds experience.
- Experience builds leverage.
 - Leverage builds better outcomes.

Delay is not denial. 
Quitting is.
Don’t quit, don’t give up.

The most dangerous lie we tell ourselves is this:
“There’s nothing I can do.”

Yes, life is unfair, circumstances are real and  constraints exist.

Yet you still have personal agency.

The power to:
- Find a way
- Learn what you don’t know
- Build what you don’t have
- Become who you need to become

You are not a spectator in your own life, you are a participant.

The moment you truly accept this everything starts to change.

Rooting for you in 2026.

Let’s make it count.

At Davos, Jensen Huang (CEO of Nvidia) said something that should make every professional pause:

AI will increase the value of blue-collar work.

For years, we believed progress meant moving from hands-on work, to slides,  to meetings  and then management.

AI may be changing this equation. 

When data centers go down, power systems fail and infrastructure breaks slides don't fix it. 
 
People who understand real systems do.

A new category is forming:

The New Blue Collar:
- technical
- hands-on
- & digitally enabled

These are extremely hard to replace.

These are the people who:
 • Keep AI running
 • Keep factories working
 • Keep infrastructure alive

HIstory as shown us that when systems become complex, the people who understand them gain disproportionate influence.

Here is something to reflect on: 
   Are you optimizing for titles or for real-world leverage?

The future may belong to those who can still make things work when complexity hits.

The expensive mistake many  international students in the U.S make.

They treat U.S. work visas and residency like a sprint.

They wait until:
- Final semester
- Or when OPT is about to start
- Or when panic has already set in

Then they ask  “What opportunities are available?”

Sorry U.S work and residency visas do not work that way.

Most require long lead times, positioning, evidence and strategy.

By the time many people “wake up" it is already too late.

Work and residency in the U.S is not a job application problem.

It’s a career strategy problem. Strategy is a long game.

Don’t repeat this mistake in 2026.

A recent experience reminded me of this.

I was invited by a family who shared their journey navigating high school and college in the U.S. specifically here in Colorado.

In one evening, I learned what months of independent research couldn’t reveal.

My gap wasn’t information. It was orientation.

Whether I admitted it or not, my environment had trained me to see education a certain way.

Their experience helped me see what I couldn’t yet see for myself.

That’s the quiet power of community.

Three lessons were reinforced:
- Reach out to learn.
- Reach up to grow.
- Reach down to give.

Never underestimate the people who expand your view of what’s possible.
