The most dangerous phrase in advertising:
"Let's try something different."

I hear it every time performance dips.

ROAS drops. Panic sets in. Everyone wants to pivot.

But "different" isn't a strategy.

Here's what actually works when ads start declining:

Step 1: Diagnose Before You Pivot
Don't assume the creative is dead. Check:
→ Is the hook rate dropping? (Fatigue)
→ Is the CTR dropping? (Offer clarity issue)
→ Is the CVR dropping? (Landing page problem)

Step 2: Iterate, Don't Reinvent
If hook rate is the issue, swap the first 3 seconds. Keep everything else.
If CTR is dropping, test different CTAs. Keep the angle.

Step 3: Test Adjacent, Not Opposite
If your winning angle was "expert authority," don't jump to "funny UGC."
Test “different expert” or “expert + patient testimonial.”

Stay close to what worked.

Real example:
Brand's top ad started declining after 6 weeks.

Their instinct: "Let's make something totally new."

Our move: Keep the exact script. Just change the creator from a 30-year-old to a 45-year-old.

Boom. CPA dropped 22%.

Ad ran another 8 weeks.

Innovation for innovation's sake kills momentum.

Iteration keeps winners alive.

When performance dips, don't ask "what's new?"

Ask "what's still true about what worked?"

Then build from there.

They’ll make you 50 ads.

But they won’t tell you which angles to test or why.

Most brands' creative testing looks like this:

Launch 10 ads.
Wait a week.
