Here’s how tech debt happens:

Every sales org I’ve been a part of has wasted money on software without a plan in place.

But it’s not unique to businesses. People do it, too.

Recently, a popular sailing YouTube channel called “Spear It Animal” raffled away their boat.

Why? 

Because they figured they could raise more money selling raffle tickets for $25 to $100 to each of their followers than by selling their boat in the current market.

It’s so much easier for someone to buy a boat for $25 than for $250,000. 

But that owner will now have to take over the marina fees, the maintenance, and taxes. 

When she had only a budget of $25.

Just like a GTM org will have to pay for services, implementation, and administration following the initial purchase.

This is tech debt.

⛵ Bringing it back to a sailing metaphor: just buying a boat isn’t going to get you across an ocean. You need to know how to chart a course.

Here’s why so many RevOps projects fail:

There’s no co-ownership.

Let’s pretend:

🧑‍💼 A VP of Sales wants a new field to capture qualification criteria.

⚒️ The RevOps or BizApps admin builds and tests the field.

🧑‍💻 The same team deploys the field.

Outcome: At best, an enablement session drives half-assed adoption. At worst, the VP of Sales inevitably departs, and the field collects dust in the CRM. 

How could the project succeed?: Using the IKEA Effect.

The IKEA Effect is a cognitive bias in which people overvalue something they partially assembled themselves. That’s why that POÄNG armchair is proudly sitting in your room.

Sales VPs and RevOps leaders: let your sales folks have a say in the build. Have them test it in the sandbox. Heck, let them test it in a broken state so they can tell you it needs a metaphorical quarter-turn screw.

That’s how you drive adoption.

⛵ Your pipeline leaks could be sinking your ship. Here are 3 quick steps to clean your lead routing:

1. Audit your entry points

  - Make a list of all your lead sources (forms, imports, integrations, marketing automation tools)

  - Check that every entry point is correctly mapped to your CRM with consistent and normalized field values (e.g., lead source, campaign)

2. Validate routing logic

  - Validate your assignment rules: Are leads being sent to the right reps/teams based on geography, territory, or round-robin?

  - Look for gaps: leads with no owner, stalled leads, or incorrect territory assignments.

3. Automate & Test

  - Use automation (e.g., workflows or tools like OpenPrise) to fill missing fields and handle exceptions (e.g., leads without state or industry values).

  - Run 10–20 test leads through the system to ensure every scenario routes correctly.

Hidden leaks caused by bad CRM hygiene are a nuisance at best, but costly at worst.

Now go patch those leaks.
