Moderating a panel discussion is an art on its own.
It requires sharp listening & finesse - especially when the issue at hand bears high-stakes.

I shared this with PBMUKS (NUS Malay Language Society) from the National University of Singapore during our Hosting & Moderating workshop.

We talked about:

The students shared where they got stuck, and I surgically pinpointed why they were stuck and how to get out of it.

They immediately tried the tactic and it gave rise to a lightbulb moment in the room - this gives joy to me as their coach.

How I Refined The Slides For A CEO with 10,000 staff, >SGD$1B revenue for A New Year's Address to Almost 300 People

As my client was preparing for their CEO's address, they asked me to help them land a compelling speech.

Here's how I helped them and what you can do for your next speech to get Buy-In:

1️⃣ Start with a Rhetorical Question.

Ask a question that plants an idea into your audience's mind. 
One of the best ways I've found is to ask questions that don't need answering (rhetorical). 

For example, "What does it take for us to become the No.1 organisation in our space today?" or "What does it mean to chart our own path amongst our competitors in 2026?".

Ask the question, then pause, look at the audience to let it land.

2️⃣ Build the Stakes

There are 2 parts to this: 1st is to give a problem statement and the 2nd is to give problem examples. 

Stakes are what build tension in your speech.

You could start by sharing about the market conditions, or how the economy is slowing down last qtr, or how new entrants are posing a threat to market share. 

When this happens, the audience naturally wants to listen because you've answered the most fundamental question in the audience's mind - "What's in it for me?"

3️⃣ Answer the question, "So what?"

The reason why people find speeches boring is that many fail to address, "So what?" 

Speeches tend to be lofty slogans or corporate-speak and this gets lost on deaf ears. 

Here's how you solve this problem: You bring up a hypothetical avatar and talk about them and their problems in relation to your speech. 

For example, "Here's Frustrated Fionne. She's working long hours, trying to make ends meet and still can't pay her bills and get her child to a decent childcare centre." 

If you can show that you understand their problems exactly, people will believe that you have the solution for them.

4️⃣ Be a Constructive Contrarian 

Singapore prides itself on modelling after successful case studies. 
However, this can be a problem because it means one can merely be a copycat.

During the speech with my client, we managed to reach a landing point - "How do we chart our own path forward?" became the rallying cry for the organisation that has had so much success for decades. 

It was as if the lights were turned on for my client when we reached this point; that's where I knew we were onto something big.

5️⃣ Speak to Their Nervous System by Giving Verbal & Visual Cues. 

You must know how to give verbal and visual cues in order to tap into their System 1 (automatic, intuitive) thinking.

For example, you can show an X and Y axis and chart a graph, you could screenshot a newspaper article from The Straits Times or Forbes, you could do a pop quiz and ask, "Show of hands, how many of you here exercise at least 3x a week?". 

When you do this, you trigger people to respond; when you don't, people get too comfortable and slide too deep into their minds.

Attention isn’t the problem. Belief is.
Most leaders, sellers, and speakers are taught how to communicate, but not how belief actually transfers.

📌 Research is clear:
 People don’t act because your logic is sound.
 They act when emotion, identity, and conviction align.

- Neuroscience shows that decision-making collapses without emotion (Damasio).
 - Behavioral science proves people mirror belief before they accept ideas (Bandura).
 - Cognitive psychology confirms we decide fast and emotionally, then justify later (Kahneman).

Founders: Buy-In means your vision no longer depends on you pushing, your team, investors, and market pull it forward because they believe it.

Salespeople: Buy-In means prospects convince themselves to act, not because you pressured them, but because the decision feels like their own.

C-suites: Buy-In means alignment without enforcement, where strategy moves at scale because belief travels faster than authority.

That’s why:
 ❌ Scripts fail
 ❌ Data alone doesn’t convert
 ❌ “Perfect presentations” still don’t move people

What works instead?
Belief transfer.

When someone feels your conviction, sees themselves in the story, and internalizes the decision as their own, action becomes inevitable.

This is the difference between:
 • Compliance vs commitment
 • Persuasion vs transformation
 • Being heard vs being believed

I've seen the patterns time and time again with C-suites, founders and salespeople - focus on engineering belief transfer, it's what moves the needle.
