Founder of Cigul. My journey from a freelancer to an agency owner generating $1.2M per year has been an exciting adventure filled with learning and growth.

Back in 2014, I went to Australia for my bachelor's in IT. Despite the formal education, I realized that real-world experience was where the true learning happened. After working with top-tier agencies in Australia for three years, I moved to New York in 2021.

I began my freelancing journey as a UI designer in 2018, leveraging platforms like Upwork and Fiverr. Through dedication and strategic efforts, I built my solo service business and started making $100K/year within 12 months. By 2020, the workload had increased significantly, prompting me to hire my first full-time employee.

In a product design class, we broke down a Nigerian bank’s payment experience (Had a lot of friction)

I led part of the redesign with students — focusing on flow clarity, friction points, and real-world payment behavior.

We also turned some of it into a polished prototype to show how to think about complex, high-risk products like payments.

It was a good thinking exercise for them — and that’s exactly the point.

One of the biggest traits of a good designer is that;
your screens and flows are correct.
Not “looks right.”
Not “inspired by Dribbble.”
But designed the way the product is actually supposed to work.

This is where many early-stage designers struggle.
And part of why some clients won’t hire you.

Example: a date picker

You’re designing a screen to select a date, now - How does the calendar appear?

- In a new screen?
- as a modal?
- an inline element?

Any option can be valid.
What matters is why you chose it.
If the answer is “it felt right,” that’s guesswork NOT design.

I have also been a culprit of this mistake untill i made a conscious choice to be correct always - I mean you have to when you're designing for a million users 😎

What fixed it for me wasn’t Dribbble or Behance.
It was:
- Downloading real apps
- Visiting real websites
- Clicking through real flows
- Making sure what I designed matched how products work in the real world.

Today, tools make this easier.
My personal favorite: Mobbin.
If you want to level up as a designer, stop guessing—and start verifying.
