That just happened at Anthropic.
 
Dario Amodei told Davos that AI can handle "most, maybe all" coding tasks in 6 to 12 months. His own engineers don't write code anymore. They edit what AI produces.
 
Meanwhile, Anthropic pays senior engineers a median of $570k. Some roles hit $759k. L5/L6 postings confirm $474k to $615k.
 
They're still hiring.
 
The $570k engineers aren't writing for loops. They decide which AI output ships and which gets thrown away. They design the systems, decide how services connect, figure out what breaks at scale.
 
Nobody automated the person who gets paged at 2am when the architecture falls over.
 
"Engineering is dead" makes a great headline. What happened is weirder. The job changed beyond recognition. The paychecks got bigger.
 
If you're a developer watching this, your value is shifting. Away from syntax. Toward judgment, system design, and knowing when the AI is confidently wrong.

That "have you considered..." comment on your PR?

It's probably slowing everyone down.

Just sat through a team refresher on code reviews. One line from our TL stuck with me:

"If it works and doesn't break anything, ship it. File a follow-up ticket for the 'better approach.'"

We've all been there. Someone leaves a comment like "have you considered using X pattern here?" The code works. Tests pass. But now you're refactoring something that was already done.

Our team landed on two simple rules:

Block the merge for:
- "Request changes" status
- Code that will actually break things

Don't block for:
- "This could be cleaner"
- "I would've done it differently"
- "Consider using X instead"

Those suggestions are valuable. Write them down. Create a ticket. Address them in the next iteration.

But don't hold up a perfectly functional PR because someone prefers a different approach.

The engineers I've seen ship the most? They treat code review as a conversation, not a gate.

Perfectionism disguised as code quality is still just perfectionism.
