I’ve lived in France for 3 years and I’m nowhere near fluent in French. 

That’s not some false modesty, it’s the truth. 

I know enough to get by, order drinks, chat to the cashier, answer the phone to the postman (yeh that’s a thing here) and handle myself when I’m out and about.  

But I can’t get deep with my in-laws, or chime in with something witty halfway through a conversation, and I’m always missing the chance to chip in cos it takes me a few seconds to process what’s been said and how to reply. 

It’s frustrating as f*ck. 

I was having lessons when I first moved out here, but then work got too busy, and the last thing I wanna do after a day sat at a laptop, is open a book or an App and start learning a language. 

I know what you’re gonna say, “you should make time if you really want to learn”, and that’s fair, but it’s one of those things that’s way easier said than done. Same with asking my partner to only talk to me in French, sounds like a great thing to do, ends up being a pain in the arse. 

I guess all this to say, learning a language as an adult is f*cking hard. Brutally humbling is probably the best way to describe my experience. 

Life out here is great, but it’s not without its challenges.

Oh, and if you’ve cracked learning a language while juggling a kid, a business, a brain that says no to anything that feels like school, and a belief that weekends shouldn’t involve a screen, I’m all ears.

21 reasons why your personal brand sucks:

1. You don’t wake up at 4am to meditate and drink your own piss
2. You aren’t travelling around Southeast Asia
3. You don’t wear enough Gymshark or Represent
4. You don’t have a podcast
5. You don’t have ADHD
6. You don’t start posts with, “Nobody is talking about this”
7. You don’t post pics of books you’ve never read

What did I miss?

“Please, do not randomly DM people on LinkedIn!”

This stuff makes me laugh.

I find it weird how it’s always the ones with zero LinkedIn presence spouting nonsense like this. 

We all hate shitty outreach messages, me more than anyone, but that doesn’t mean DMing people is bad or wrong or cringey or doesn’t work. 

That’s wild. 

Nothing against this person, but they’ve posted twice in 12 months, and judging by their profile, aren’t using LinkedIn to generate new business. Which is fair. Whatever. But surely that means you shouldn’t really be giving out advice on what to do, especially not something as bold as, “do not send DMs to people” lol. 

I genuinely believe that when people say, “don’t DM people”, what they actually mean is, “I hate receiving rubbish DMs”... and we all do. The “saw your post about X” or the cheesy ass lick that then turns into a pitch. It's all gross. 

But that’s not proper outreach imo. 

When you build a proper list, understand who you’re messaging, make it relevant, show you can really solve their problem and approach it like a normal human…it’s really effective. And something you should definitely take seriously if you’re looking to grow your business. 

So yeah. Be careful who you take advice from alright. 

Some opinions are based on personal preference. Others, like mine, are based on doing the work. Big difference.

I moaned about the weather in Nice the other day. 

Why? 

Because it rained for 2 days straight, after 3 weeks of uninterrupted sun. 

Safe to say you can take a person out of England, but you can’t take the English out of a person.  

Some habits are hard to shake lol.

My son went to school this morning dressed as The Hulk for carnival. 

It was either that or Lilo from Lilo and Stich. 

In true toddler fashion, he wanted to go as both, and started crying when I told him that’s not really possible. 

I told him we were in a rush and were gonna be late, but he wasn’t having any of it, just sitting on the floor, stiff as a board. 

So, when he asked me if I’ll dress up as Lilo tonight when he comes home from school, I just said yes cos we HAD to leave right that minute. 

Anyway, all this to say, I'm fully regret that decision now, even more so cos I just put this stupid thing on my head for a pic, right as my neighbour walked past the driveway and looked in. 

What am I doing man?

Your audience isn't following along with every single thing you post on this platform.

If I were to ask you:

“How many times do you talk directly about what you do and how you help people?”

And you reply:

“LOADS! A few times a month at least!”

That’s the reason why your content isn't doing anything meaningful for your business. 

Talk in detail about your offer, and how it changes people’s lives, at least three times a week. 

Sound.

Ignore the LinkedIn kings and queens telling you to “add value”. 

It’s meaningless. 

“Add value” has become the go-to slogan for people who’ve never sold anything. 

On this platform, when people say, “add value”, what they actually mean is, “teach people how to do your job”. 

Basically, churn out free tips, frameworks and checklists that attract other people who do exactly the same thing as you. 

If your goal is to rack up lots of little thumbs and hearts, this will probably help you achieve that. But if your goal is to get clients, stop trying to be everyone’s free f*cking teacher, cos it’s about as useful as wiping your arse with 1ply toilet roll the morning after a vindaloo. 

Clients don’t care how valuable your content is. They care whether you get them, their pain, goals, business, industry, etc. 

The people who love your tutorials and comment “🔥 so valuable” aren’t ever gonna buy from you. They’re fans, and not the kind you wanna entertain too often if your goal is lead gen. 

If you want buyers, focus on: 

- Sharing your opinions
- Showing you understand their problems better than they do 
- Proving you can solve said problem(s)

Otherwise, forget making LinkedIn a predictable lead gen channel for your business.

- What profit margin are you running?
- What does the team structure look like?
- What’s your actual take-home pay?
- How many clients does that mean?
- How much pressure does that put on cashflow?

Because revenue goals without structure are just daydreams with a spreadsheet.

Reverse engineer it:

- £1m at 10% profit = £100k (not sexy)
- £1m at 30% profit = £300k (now we’re talking)

Same revenue.

Completely different lifestyle.

If your goals don’t include profit, cash, and sanity, you’re setting yourself up to hate the business you’re building.

“Smashing It” Culture Is a Joke

You know what I’m bored of?

“Smashing it.”

“Killing it.”

“Locked in.”

Mate.

You weren’t locked in.

You did 47 minutes on your laptop, checked your phone 19 times and called it deep work.

Everyone online is “smashing it”.

They’ll tell you they work 24/7.

No days off.

Different animal.

Up at 5am.

Grinding.

Meanwhile:

- Margins are average
- Cash flow is tight
- They don’t know their tax bill
- They avoid looking at their numbers
- They’re stressed every month end

If you’re doing £500k revenue,

Working “24/7”,

And taking home less than minimum wage…

You’re not smashing it.

You’ve built yourself a job.

Revenue is vanity.

Profit is sanity.

Cash is oxygen.

At EA, we care about:

- Net margin
- Cash in the bank
- Director take-home
- Scalability

Because “working 24/7” isn’t a flex.

It’s usually a sign something’s broken.

And “smashing it” doesn’t pay corporation tax.

Profit does.

If your accountant is a family friend…

You probably don’t have an accountant.

You have a favour.

One of the biggest red flags on a sales call:

“Yeah, he’s just a family friend. It’s easier.”

Easier.

So is skipping leg day.

Doesn’t build anything worth having.

Here’s what “family friend accountant” usually means for a £200k–£1m agency:

– You speak once a year
– No proper monthly numbers
– No margin analysis
– No forecasting
– No tax planning before year end
– No one challenging what you’re taking out

It’s comfortable.

And comfort is expensive.

When you’re trying to scale:

– 3 staff to 8
– £300k to £1m
– Chaos to structure

You don’t need “easy”.

You need:

– Weekly bookkeeping
– Monthly reports
– Cash flow forecasts
– Proper tax planning
– Someone who’ll say, “Why are your margins that low?”
– Someone who isn’t scared to challenge your drawings

Most family friends won’t challenge you.

Because they don’t want to make Christmas awkward.

But business isn’t Christmas dinner.

It’s war.

If your accountant feels “safe” and “easy”…

Ask yourself whether they’re helping you grow.

Or just helping you file.

Big difference.

Expert

The word gets thrown around like confetti.

Same way everyone who runs a half marathon and lifts a few weights suddenly calls themselves a hybrid athlete.

I’ve just completed another two HYROX events.
I’m training for a sub-3 marathon.
I can bench 120kg (1rep😂)
And I still wouldn’t call myself a hybrid athlete.

Put some respect on the word athlete.
I’m miles off it.

Because I understand how high the bar actually is.
That’s the difference.

Standards.

Business is no different.

Agency owners are constantly sold by “experts” who:
• Scaled one client
• Had one big quarter
• Went viral a few times
• Filed a handful of tax returns

That’s not expertise.
That’s exposure.

Expertise is repetition.
Pressure.
Edge cases.

Fixing things when they’re messy, not when they’re trending.
In my world that looks like:
• £200k agencies making nothing and not knowing why
• £500k agencies with “record months” but no cash
• £1m agencies drifting into VAT disasters
• Directors overdrawn by £100k
• Businesses growing themselves into the ground

That’s where depth is built.

In uncomfortable conversations.
In messy clean-ups.
In fixing pricing, margins and systems before they snap.
Same in training.

Anyone can complete one tough event.

Very few:
Track the numbers.
Fix weaknesses.
Respect the process.
Turn up again.
And again.
And again.

That’s the gap between participation and mastery.

Agencies don’t need hype.
They need operators who’ve seen what breaks at £300k, £500k and £1m and know how to fix it before it happens.

Standards matter.

If you want to be taken seriously,
Raise yours.
