What’s your motivation? For me, it’s about enjoying how I spend my time and who I spend my time with. There are emotional motivations behind all I do. Here’s how I know it’s the same for you…

It’s human nature. Our emotional motivations are the driving forces behind our decisions and behaviors. 

They help us instinctively decide how we feel about things, people, brands… which we’ll gravitate toward… which we’ll try to avoid. For anything else, we’re indifferent.

Acting on our emotional motivations is not irrational. It’s completely natural. 

For so long, there have been misconceptions about emotion among brand leaders. When, in fact, understanding and addressing people’s emotional motivations can be your greatest competitive advantage.

When I told Sarah in 2019 that I wanted to become an entrepreneur… launch a brand consultancy… one rooted in understanding the emotional motivations of customers as a critical input to brand strategy… before I had a single client… She said, ”I believe in you.” That was all the motivation I needed to get started.

There were caution signs about walking on the jetty rocks. I could have stood still and looked from a far. Instead, I went in for a closer look. Why?

We gravitate toward the things that make us feel good.

I love the crashing water on the rocks. 

I enjoy standing on them, and watching the tide move toward them and away from them. 

This instinctive reaction we have – to move toward things that make us feel good, and away from things that make us feel bad – is something that most brand leaders don’t apply to their work.

In fact, there’s a lot of behavioral science understanding that is missing from traditional brand strategy and marketing.  Curiously, so much brand work happens without behavioral science insight.

When writing a creative brief for a new campaign, how important is AUDIENCE INSIGHT – Not Important • Important • Most Important? 
OK, you probably guessed my answer, but here’s why…

What’s the purpose of the campaign? → To connect with people so that they become interested in what you have to offer.

Why, then, are so many creative briefs un-inspiring and devoid of deep audience / customer understanding? Without audience understanding, your campaign ideas are guesswork.

In my conversations with Jess Kessler (who is Head of Brand & Content Marketing for North America at Audible) we’ve talked how audience understanding is the first step to creating campaigns that connect with people.

Jess says: 
“Audiences change so fast, and we at times become very comfortable in our approach to things because they've worked or people have responded well to them... The brands that do it the best are always one step ahead of the game.”
