New Modern Lawyer

The New Modern Lawyer provides information and resources for lawyers who are starting or operating a small firm or solo law practice. Law school teaches how to do legal research, write pleadings and briefs, and “think like a lawyer.” However, law school does not teach the business of running a law practice. The site strives to be that missing law school class.

The focus of the New Modern Lawyer is on providing you, the solo or small firm practitioner, with relevant information and helping to make your law practice as successful as possible.

The Legal Practice Workshop (formerly known as the Legal Practice Lab) is a program of the Columbus Bar Association designed to help lawyers starting firms or going out on their own by providing practical advice on practice management topics. The program is divided into 6 sessions each lasting 3 hours. CLE and NLT credit is available for participants.

The LPW was redesigned in 2022 with a focus on practical discussions around helping participants create a law practice that will make them successful and fulfilled in their profession and life.

Speaker and presenter on law practice and business law topics. I am a regular CLE speaker for Ohio attorneys. I also talk and provide legal information to small business owners.

My focus is on educating while entertaining. Traditional CLE-type presentations are normally dry lectures with bullet-filled powerpoints. I do not lecture. I create themes for each of my presentations and incorporate images, humor, and discussion as much as possible. I love the use of slides and believe they bring an additional dimension to auditory presentations, but I refuse to use bullet points.

I never wanted to be a solo lawyer running my own law practice.

Graduating from law school and passing the bar, the job market for those without guaranteed post-graduation employment was sparse. To pay the bills, I reluctantly rented an office across the hall from a law school buddy, set up a card table, and waited for the phone to ring.

During my legal career I have been a true solo, partnered with two other lawyers, was part of one of the first virtual law firms in the country, and was Of Counsel to small business law firm.

I have had to bootstrap and learn how to both practice law and run a law business on the fly. I have seen recessions, economic booms, and pandemics.

Now, in addition to running my own law practice, I help solo and small firm lawyers transform their law practices from something that causes stress and dictates their lives, to a business that provides them with the life they want. All while being a #LawyerDad to a 7-year old.
