What they actually want is someone who executes without friction.

But real marketing leadership does not work that way.

A good CMO is not just there to run campaigns. They are there to make hard calls.

Sometimes that means pushing back on targets that look good in a board deck but are not grounded in reality.

Sometimes it means saying we should not spend that budget yet.

Sometimes it means killing a project the company is emotionally attached to.

And yes, sometimes it means disagreeing with the CEO.

That tension is healthy.

But it is also uncomfortable.

So what often happens is the quieter marketing leader lasts longer.

The one who nods in meetings.
