Filling out those ICP (Ideal customer profile) forms, was something I regret till now.

I didn't know how to answer questions like -

For f**ks sake, I don't know!

I even interviewed my ideal customers.

I asked questions to them and found out their pain points in vague words.

I knew exactly how my service will solve it.

But even though the pieces looked like they would fit together perfectly.

They didn’t.

Something was missing.

And I found that missing magic accidentally.

By hit and trial for 6 months.

It took me 6 months to find my target audience.
Their pain points.
And correct my messaging to them. 

I know how much this process was delayed by the incomplete information on the internet.

Since then it sort of became my mission to help people who are stuck in this place.

Loss didn’t arrive on a particular day. It was already there. Sitting quietly. Like an extra cup on the dining table no one remembered to put away.

In the 80s, in Bombay, this was not unusual. Things went missing all the time. Electricity. Pavements. Certainty. People learned not to ask too many questions. You learned to live with gaps. You learned that absence had a shape.

When a father dies early, the house does not collapse. That would be easier. Instead, it continues. Shoes remain by the door. Papers stay stacked for years. Someone still reaches for advice and catches only air. The dead do not leave. They simply stop answering.

Grief in such homes is not discussed. It is absorbed. It becomes competence. Children learn to be sensible too soon. They learn to watch adults closely, to read moods the way other children read comics. Silence becomes a language, fluently spoken.

Bombay helped. It was crowded enough to hide in. You could carry your grief through trains and markets without anyone noticing. There was no space for private tragedy. Everyone was busy surviving something. Loss learned not to take up too much room.

Time, after that, behaved strangely. The past grew heavier than the future. Memory sharpened in unhelpful ways – small, useless details insisting on survival. The way a voice sounded when tired. The smell of hair oil. The click of keys on a table. These things stayed. They demanded witnesses.

Evenings were hardest. The city slowed and the sun left the sky in fragments of orange and gray. I would walk the narrow streets near the sea, trying to remember how he laughed, trying to hear the words that had been cut short. You could feel loss in the salt air. In the way boats rocked in the harbour. In the way shadows moved too quickly.

So, writing did not begin as desire. It began as accumulation. A need to hold on to what had no place to go. Language became storage. A cupboard for the unsayable. Words were attempts to call him back, though I understood even then he would not return.

Loss does not make writers out of everyone. But it teaches the habits writing requires: attention, restraint, empathy. It teaches you that people are never whole. That every conversation has a missing sentence. That love is both abundant and temporary.

Years later, loss becomes less painful and more instructive. It changes how you see others. You understand that everyone is walking around with a private before-and-after. You learn to measure your sentences against the weight of absence, the space left by people who shaped you without asking.

And so you write. To keep your loss company. To make sure what mattered once is not erased simply because it is no longer visible. And in writing, sometimes, the dead leave gifts – small, fragile, unlabelled, tucked inside your chest.

You carry them forward in words, in sentences that will survive you, quietly, for someone else to stumble upon.
