At a social gathering recently, I met my wedding photographer.

This conversation was different because it was not about my wedding functions. 

We talked about work and I told him I do corporate interventions on Communication Skills.

In a few minutes of the conversation, he said something profound:

"I learned a communication lesson in my profession.
Not from emotions,
but from instructions."

That caught my attention!

He explained.

During couple shoots, when he says:
“Just act natural.”

People freeze.
They smile awkwardly.
They overthink their posture.
They ask, “What should we do?”

Then he tells them something different:
“Forget the camera. Just talk to each other.”

Suddenly, everything changes.
Expressions soften.
Body language relaxes.
The photos come alive.

Same people.
Same setting.
Different communication.

And I was impressed how he understood the value of communication in his profession.

Marriage didn’t take me away from my career.

Strength in uniform is clearly visible. 
But strength after retirement?

It can be invisible.

But don’t underestimate it.

It is invisible yet existing!

At AS Pathania Institute, I spoke with retired Army veterans and their families.

Earlier the goal was to conduct an emotionally driven performance based workshop.

Later, I understood that facilitation was enough.

I went there to understand minds shaped by years of duty.

As a Mind Performance and Emotional regulation coach, that curiosity mattered to me.

I have always been fascinated by the ones who have demonstrated REAL strength and toughness.

The DEEPLY REAL one.

Because these people actually chose that life.

Full of discipline and courage.

I wanted to understand : 
How do people trained to stay composed, carry?
1. stress
2. pressure, and 
3. inner battles

The room was calm and observant.

Not everyone spoke, but silence itself told a story.

And then, a few voices, starting with the ladies chose to open up about life reflections.

Those moments held more emotion for me, than any perfectly planned exercise ever could.

As I left the meeting over shared talks,

I had more respect for the strength I witnessed, 
both spoken and unspoken.

Every time I work with students, I’m reminded of something important:

We have highly educated minds,
but often mentally exhausted thinkers.

Sharp talent.
Endless potential.
Yet many struggling with overthinking, hesitation, and silent self-doubt.

A gap most institutions unintentionally overlook:
Students are trained for performance.
But rarely for clarity, emotional regulation, and decision-making intelligence.

They learn subjects.
But not always how to manage pressure, uncertainty, and internal noise.

And in the real world —
CLARITY becomes the true competitive advantage.

The session had honest reflections, powerful questions & real conversations.

My client failed during the coaching intervention.

We met offline in the hills at a family wedding.

On day 3 of the 4 days of functions.

She came from Delhi, it was her husband’s friend’s son’s wedding.
We talked in general, liked each other’s vibe.
We talked about work and the trust developed.
And 4 weeks later, she ended up being my client.

She didn’t fail targets.
She didn’t fail performance metrics.

She failed to stay perfectly consistent.
Life, pressure, court cases and responsibility don’t always cooperate with personal growth plans.

And yet, she kept coming back.

Because she vowed to take full responsibility of her growth, during the 1st coaching session itself.

Early in our first conversation, she said something,
"I’ve handled teams, crises, pressure
but I don’t feel as confident as I look."

A senior manager.
16 years of experience.

She led people, made decisions, carried weight most never see.
She was human enough to say that she didn’t want motivation.
She wanted something quieter.

To walk into rooms without that subtle self-doubt.
To speak without doubting every sentence.
To lead her team with calm instead of constant internal pressure.

There were weeks where her ritual practices slipped.
Days where her mind was too crowded.
And when her progress looked average.

But she never failed at being honest.
Never failed to acknowledge the noise in her head.
Never failed at trying again.
No drama, no excuses, no pretending.

After 6-8 weeks of performance coaching intervention, something shifted.

Her words developed gravity.
Her presence settled.
Her team interactions saw a shift.

Her confidence didn’t arrive like a sudden unexpected rain.
It grew like stability.

Your strangest performance barriers are the ones you CAN'T SEE.

In my 1:1 coaching work, I often meet ambitious professionals dealing with something subtle. 
The mental habits that quietly drain energy.

Yes, very quietly.

As a result, decision fatigue occurs.
They are not able to feel content because of not performing to their full potential.

Nothing dramatic.
Nothing obviously wrong.
Just invisible resistance is what they feel.

You function well.
You deliver results.
You’re doing fine.
And that’s exactly you question why you feel the resistance.
Why?

But feeling the friction or resistance doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

All you need is to change your mental and emotional habits.

Result?
Calmer reactions.
Sharper thinking.
Stronger communication.
Small shifts. But Big impact.

If you’re a high performer, you usually don’t need more motivation.
You need less interference.

You want less mental noise.
Less unnecessary friction.

Last year, my sister-in-law’s 13 year young daughter moved to hostel.

Post that, I had a long phone conversation with her.

For her it was :
New place.
New routine.
New people.
New pressures.

And somewhere in between describing her day and adjusting to the unfamiliar rhythm of hostel life & classroom environment, she talked excitedly about her high aspirations to do A,B and C, D and E.

She has been a jovial child since childhood.
Fearless to the core!

She witnessed a subtle mix of excitement, homesickness, & pressure together!

All of these competing for space inside her young mind.

She has been brilliant in academics and extra-curricular and this time, she wanted to surpass her own limits and amplify her mind performance.

Why? Because she understood the depth of the work that occurs in 1:1 coaching space and when she realized this, she wanted to benefit from it.

I work with teenagers neither as a fixer, nor as a motivator.

But as someone who helps them understand what’s happening inside their own head.

Motivation does comes but after the real deep work is done in any session.

Over time, I’ve developed a simple filter.
I work with young people who are genuinely willing to grow.
GENUINELY is the keyword.
What doesn’t work (for them or for me) is coaching driven purely by parental pressure.

Growth needs willingness.
Self-work needs ownership.

I don’t expect my young coachees to be perfect.
But it is about sincerity, valuing time and respecting the process.

Because mindset, even more than the ability, decides how far you actually go.

High performance isn’t reaching the top.
It’s what happens inside you once you’re there.

I’ve seen very capable people who climbed fast.
And almost every time, I notice the same shift.

They get quieter.
More guarded.
Less willing to pull others up.

Not because they changed.
Because fear did.

Fear of slipping.
Fear of being replaced.
Fear of losing what finally feels secure.

In the video, one person reaches the top.
The important moment isn’t the win.

It’s the choice to pause…
and send the rope down.

That choice has nothing to do with leadership titles.
It’s mindset and emotional regulation.

When fear runs the system, people climb alone.
When the mind feels safe, performance becomes collective.

That’s the difference I see when the inner work is done.
