Goodbye, Pepe. 🕊️ 

I found Pepe while biking around Houston a few years ago. He was an emaciated stray walking in the middle of the street with no collar. 

I told him, “If you don’t bite me, I’ll take you home.” He didn’t, and that moment changed both of our lives.

At the vet, we learned he was filled with heartworms and parasites. We treated him, gave him care, and he recovered. But his heart murmur never went away. Over time, it grew worse. 

Still, Pepe never lost his spirit. He was goofy, curious, and bold. He’d chase the big dogs like he was one of them, always convinced he could keep up.

Today, we had to say goodbye. His heart finally gave out, and we made the painful decision to let him rest.

You don’t always get to choose when someone or something comes into your life, but you do get to choose how you show up for them.

Even with a weak heart, Pepe lived with joy. And that’s a lesson worth carrying forward.

I will forever miss you my sweet boy.

I loved serving as Program Director of Career Pathways. Career Pathways' mission is to help parents complete college and secure a high-paying, in-demand job after college. I managed a staff of 3, a student group of 150+, and a budget of 350K. 

Our staff taught students how to job search, write value-driven resumes, and master interview skills. After securing employment, we worked with students for a full year to ensure all their financial needs were met so that they could continue leading sustainable careers for themselves and their families. 

I had the privilege of serving on multiple leadership committees: Chancellor's Advisory Council, Chair of Mid-Level Supervisors' Council, and Student Affairs Leadership. In 2018, I was awarded the 2018 John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award at the League of Innovations conference in Washington, D.C.

I was blessed to serve as career coach and case manager of Career Pathways. I was chosen for this role 5 months after budget cuts ended a 5-year teaching career. For the next semester, I spent every day honing my job search and resume writing skills. I was a new parent and jobless. 

I had just been through everything I was about to take my students through. My students were parents who needed training to secure a financially-stable and fulfilling career for their families.

At Career Pathways, I was trained in career development, career coaching, resume writing, cover letter writing, and job search strategies. During my time, we increased enrollment by 25%, ranked in the top 3 in the state for effectiveness, and had the pleasure of helping 200+ students secure a brighter future.

After 3 years of teaching English in Japan, I returned to the US to complete my master's degree. Upon completion of my master's degree, I had the amazing opportunity to teach international college students. 

In this role, I taught all aspects of the English language from grammar and essays to public speaking and debate. I also taught the Bridge course, which was a class on American government and culture. 

Upon completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program, students transitioned into full-time undergraduate and graduate students at Arkansas State University. 

It was a pleasure to equip international students with the cultural and linguistic skills they needed to be successful college students in America.

After completing my time with the JET program, I landed an exciting job teaching in an immersive English program for Okayama-city. In this program, I served as the English Language Teacher. 

The program was unique in Okayama prefecture. It was the only English program in the public school system that taught all its subjects in Japanese and English. I taught two core classes: Art and Music. 

Teaching art and music in English to Japanese students stretched my creative thinking process and made me a better teacher. It was a great experience and the students were very kind to me for which I will always be thankful.

Japan Exchange and Teaching Program - JET プログラム - Okayama Board of Education

The JET Program is an initiative sponsored by the Japanese government to promote internationalization at the grassroots level by bringing college-educated individuals to work in communities throughout Japan.

I lived in Japan for 3 years after completing my undergraduate degree. It would not have been possible without the JET program. My role in the JET program was as Assistant Language Teacher and cultural ambassador. I worked directly with the Ministry of Education of Japan. 

In this position, I taught English to public school students across Okayama city. I also presented teaching and cultural seminar as professional development for Japanese teachers. I co-directed the English summer camp sponsored by the Okayama Department of Education. 

Living and working in Japan as a part of the JET program was a high honor and a life-changing experience. Through this experience, I developed my teaching ability, cultural competency and overall perspective about what's possible in this world. 

Joining the JET program after college was one of the best decisions of my life. I highly recommend working abroad once in your lifetime, if possible. If you need help with creating that plan, please message me. I'll do my best to help you make it happen.
