At Techstars Startup Weekend SF AI, we're hosting a fast-paced, 3-day event where tech enthusiasts come together to bring AI startup ideas to life. My role is to create an energetic and welcoming atmosphere, build connections with important sponsors, and guide participants in making their pitches clear and impactful.

Google DeepMind just ran their first Startup Session.

Got the invite from Matt Ridenour - thanks for putting this together and MCing the whole thing.

Direct access to the teams building the models. That's rare.

What they showed:

1/ Austin Sendek on materials science - his team's GNoME project discovered 2.2 million new crystal structures. That's roughly 800 years of materials knowledge generated by AI. Wild number.

2/ Genie 3 - a generative world model trained on internet videos. You describe an environment, it builds a playable 3D world in real time at 720p. Already shipping as Project Genie for AI Ultra subscribers.

3/ Anshul Ramachandran on Antigravity - DeepMind's agent-first IDE. An AI Editor, Agent Manager and Agent-Controlled Browser working together. Task-level coding, not line-by-line.

4/ Nano Banana - their image generation model that pulled 10M+ new Gemini users and 200M+ edits in the first weeks. Now powering the whole Genie world-building pipeline.

And Paige Bailey generated Hindu electro pop live on stage with Lyria. Totally awesome!

So we started making our own. Episode 1 of "LockedIn" is out. Who else gets frustrated receiving AWS/GCP bills?

Where should we channel the creative energy next -- something more satirical or slightly educational?

We act like AI showed up yesterday.

1951 - Christopher Strachey wrote a checkers program on the Ferranti Mark 1. A room-sized machine playing board games. That was the first AI.

1966 - MIT built ELIZA. A chatbot pretending to be a psychotherapist. People got emotionally attached to it. 58 years before ChatGPT.

1972 - MYCIN diagnosed blood infections better than most doctors. An AI system. In the seventies.

By the 1980s, companies were spending millions on expert systems that mimicked specialist knowledge. Then the hype died. Funding dried up. They called it the "AI winter."

We've been through this cycle before.

Hamudi Naanaa and Volodymyr Panchenko hit Anthropic's Tier 4 token limit mid-hypergrowth. 4 users to 1,400 in 3 days. 2b tokens a day! 

Their words: "A two-day response cycle doesn't match the speed we're operating at -- for us, it's 1–2 hours."

They switched to Gemini overnight. A constraint forced it.

I'm 37 today 🎂

This year I’m running the Boston Marathon.

It’s a personal milestone for me: I’ve run five Abbott World Marathon Majors before, and Boston will be the next chapter in that journey, a race I’ve been working toward for years.

As part of my prep, I'm fundraising for The Progeria Research Foundation, a disease that causes children to age 8-10x faster than normal. 

If there's one thing I've learned studying longevity at Stanford University School of Medicine, it's that not everyone starts with the same clock.

I’m happy to share that I completed the Stanford Genetics Department AI & Longevity Lab Certificate at Stanford University School of Medicine.

For me, it was an in-person program with three intensive 4-week modules, each ending with a final project.

A special thank you to Professors Michael Snyder, Ronjon Nag, and Artem A. Trotsyuk. Learning from people working at the intersection of AI, genetics, healthspan, and longevity was a real privilege.

Over the last couple of years, medicine and healthtech have become a new hobby of mine - and more than that, a space I’ve been actively exploring with real curiosity.

As a founder, I’m very interested in areas where technology can create meaningful, practical impact. Health, prevention, and longevity clearly feel like one of those directions. 

I believe AI will play a major role in how we understand aging, make better decisions earlier, and build products that help people live longer and healthier lives.

Grateful for this experience and excited to keep going deeper in this space.

Ukrainian founders are the next big thing 🇺🇦

That was one of the key ideas I shared last Friday while speaking at “Ukraine Tech: On the Battlefield and Beyond” at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York.

I was glad to join the panel “Investment Opportunities: Today and Tomorrow” together with Edward Mermelstein, Melissa Taylormoore, Andriy Romanchuk Hlib Kozak moderated by Taisa Markus.

💡 Ukraine belongs in global venture portfolios. Founders are resilient, capital-efficient, and deeply technical - building for global markets from day one. 

🤝 Strong Ukrainian deal flow is accessible. The best path is through trusted local networks - founders, operators, angel investors, diaspora leaders, and ecosystem organizations - combined with selective visits and real exposure to the ecosystem.

🚀 Several sectors feel inevitable over the next 3–5 years. Defense & dual-use tech, AI, and deep technical software - areas where Ukraine’s real-world experience is turning into globally relevant innovation.

Ukraine’s tech story is not only about resilience. It is about capability, ambition, and founders building globally relevant companies under real pressure.

Update on the pet 🐯

A week ago, I posted a tiger and called Meme Dealer my “pet project.”

Not built to monetize. Built to make me happy. Built to make other people smile, too.

And WOW — you all showed up.

What we achieved:

1. got right to the “Product of the Day” - #2
2. and then to the “Product of the Week” - #5
3. was included in “Last week’s top launches”
4. upvoted and commented on by Product Hunt founder Ryan Hoover — yes, the site is ridiculous 😂  
5. hunted by the one and only Chris Messina (Hunter #1)
6. 800+ followers / 500+ upvotes / 90+ comments
7. more than 1,000 downloads in a couple of days

But my biggest surprise?

Product Hunt is still a great playground to show your pets - a flood of feedback, new ideas, and… actual fans. That energy is real!

My takeaway: pet projects are underrated. They bring back speed, creativity, and that “why I build” feeling.
