I am the head of design at Southwest Gas Corporation, an energy company that services to 2 million customers across Southern California, Nevada, and Arizona. 

I have over 20 years of experience in the design industry, working as a graphic designer, content producer, and creative director for various companies in the gaming, entertainment, and energy sectors. I hold a dual Bachelor of Fine Arts and Corporate Communication degree from Bridgewater State University.

I keep seeing versions of that sentence from designers and other creative professionals. 

→ “It’s all become a numbers game and I dread every project now.”
→ “Clients care more about likes than substance.”
→ “Now it’s all about engagement metrics and SEO buzzwords instead of good design.”
→ “Half the time I’m designing slogans that mean nothing to me.”
→ “I feel like my creativity is being strangled by corporate targets.”

And it’s not just the work. It’s the conditions.

→ “Everyday I’m told to do the most creative things with a very limited budget and understaffed team.”
→ “The pay for designers is laughably outdated and below most other tech workers.”
→ “I wake up every day thinking about clients who don’t value our work.”

Then AI enters the chat and adds another layer.

I don’t usually share personal things on here, but these pictures of my mom in Spain have been living rent-free in my heart lately. 

Her name is Esperanza Trinidad, but most people call her Trini. Esperanza means “hope,” and that’s exactly what she gives me. 

My mom learned to ride a bike at 35 and to drive in her 40s. She moved to a new country in her 30s, learned a new language after resisting it for years, and went from working at McDonald's to navigating office jobs where she didn’t always fit in—but always stood out. 

Now, in retirement, she’s traveling the world. Spain, Italy, Turkey. 
She’s tasting new foods, seeing historic sites, and laughing with friends. 

The woman who once chased me around the house with a chancleta is now chasing adventure. 🥹 

She is brave, curious, and endlessly determined. 

If you’re ever wondering what reinvention looks like, look no further.

Facing endless revisions in your design project is a frustrating and demoralizing ordeal, testing your patience and creativity. 

Because nothing says job satisfaction like the sweet taste of never-ending edits, right?

On a more serious note, endless revisions can lead to burnout, strained client relationships, and a sense of stagnation. 

The never-ending cycle of changes may cast doubt on the project's direction, leaving you questioning the initial vision.

Here are some reasons for why this happens:

🚫 Unclear Brief
🚫 Stakeholder Misalignment
🚫 Communication Breakdown
🚫 Shifting Project Scope

Here are some steps to get you back on track:

✅ Document Changes: Keep a detailed record of all revisions.

✅ Set Clear Expectations: Establish timelines and feedback expectations.

✅ Seek Feedback Early: Present initial concepts for early input.

✅ Educate Your Client: Help them understand the impact of changes.

✅ Manage Scope Creep: Clearly define and document the project scope.

✅ Collaborate with Team: Work closely with project managers and peers.

✅ Ask for Specific Feedback: Encourage precise feedback for clarity.

✅ Present Options: Showcase diverse design possibilities.

✅ Know When to Stop: Assert professional expertise for resolution.

Design is an iterative process. You can learn from each revision and use that experience to improve your skills and work better with clients.

TBT: The time I tried to make brand standards feel less like homework.

Back in 2015, IGT was going through its first major rebrand in nearly 30 years. I was asked to create a brand book for employees. The problem? Most brand books get opened once… then collect dust.

So I tried something different. 🤔 

I designed a set of 30 interlocking brand cards inspired by the Eames House of Cards. Each card had six slits so people could connect them and literally build the brand together.

The goal wasn’t just to explain the brand.
 It was to make people interact with it.

One lesson that still sticks with me as a creative leader:
Adoption beats awareness. Every time. 💯
