I had a beer with one of Australia's best founders on Friday night, running a 9-figure company that will become a unicorn in the nearish future.

He was late, and sent me a text: "I have to wait for my agents to finish."

Ten minutes later, he showed up to the pub with an open laptop. "I figured I would just bring my agents with me". Every couple of minutes he would glance over at the screen to see what they were up to.

I wasn't mad. I understood. After all, I had kicked off two changes on Claude Code Web on my phone while I had been waiting.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but not to their own facts. And here is a fact:

Every one of the best CEOs, CTOs, and business leaders I know is spending more time building than they have in years. They are AI-pilled, they are obsessed, and they are LOVING IT.

I've been in this game for 20 years now, and this does feel different. The way startups work is changing, and the change is coming from the top, driven by founders who have rediscovered the joy of building.

LinkedIn took away my 🤖 emoji, so I've updated my profile picture to include my little robot friend.

There's a club that more than 10% of Australians are members of...

We address this challenge by helping organisations manage facilities more efficiently through our integrated technology platform and service provider network, delivering faster interventions that improve building comfort, efficiency, and reliability whilst reducing operating expenses.

My Role:
As Client Services Manager, I shepherd complex facility management projects to completion, focusing on:
• Integrated Facility Management Solutions - Leading comprehensive service delivery across diverse sectors
• Decarbonisation Strategy Development - Creating tailored pathways to reduce carbon footprint whilst maintaining operational excellence

With understand of NABERS and other building rating platforms, and commercial renewable energy experience, I bring technical expertise and commercial acumen to facility management challenges. Client Services Manager

Ensign Services Australia

Ensign provides uniform, linen and laundry services across Australia. Owned by Adamantem Capital and operated in line with the venture capital principles, Ensign provides garments, specialist workwear and related products to a huge range of industries including mining, manufacturing, construction, accommodation, hospitality, and food production. Their key clients include some of Australia's most renowned brands, as well as a huge number of smaller businesses that enjoy the benefits of an outsourced uniform and laundry service.

At Ensign, as the General Manager, I managed around 60 staff and was responsible for several million in annual revenue. I had full P&L responsibility for this division. I did weekly, monthly, and annual P&L reports at a board level. I performed all HR roles for my division including hiring, KPI setting, performance management, and termination.

I also supported safety for the site, return-to-work, EBA negotiation and other aspects of industrial relations for the wider business here in SA (around 360 staff members).

General Manager - South Australia

Solar Depot Australia

Solar power, battery storage and other forms of decentralised power generation and storage are poised to revolutionise the energy industry in Australia and around the world. Together, we can tackle the greatest challenges of our time by putting the power over power back into the hands of people and communities. Customer satisfaction in this context is the same as my personal ability to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels and get Australia on the right side of history.

Solar Depot specialises in commercial, industrial and agricultural solar projects. We focus on systems in the 50 to 500 kW range, meaning those designed for small to medium organisations who wish to offset or eliminate their use of power from the national energy grid. We favour projects that are big or bespoke. We push the boundaries of traditional solar and help new users switch to renewable energy in new ways, since 2003.

Solar Depot is making solar and battery power more viable for businesses and organisations by designing robust, predictable and financially responsible solar solutions for more customers.

At Solar Depot, as the CEO, I managed between 35 and 40 staff and was responsible for around 8 million in annual revenue. I had full P&L responsibility for that business, managed all aspects of profit/loss, cashflow management, and asset management, and reported to the company director and sole shareholder. I performed all HR roles including hiring, KPI setting, performance management, termination, etc. It was a small business, but it was a genuine CEO role.

MyBudget

Identifying, prioritising and executing changes that will help grow our client base, including client acquisition, activation, retention, and cross-selling. I worked closely with our sales and marketing team, proving sales management and supporting our digital and social media marketing. As a team, we worked together to optimise the entire client journey from the top of the funnel through to final satisification.

Due to a restructure, this and a number of other roles in the innovation, business development and marketing teams were made redundant and so I moved on from MyBudget.

Project and Innovation Leader

As the third Australian employee and the longest-serving member of the Australian team, I launched the Adelaide operations for ofo, establishing the first ofo city in the Southern Hemisphere. As the second large tech start-up that I've been involved in, ofo represented a tremendous learning experience for me. Adelaide was also the first city in Australia to start charging for our bike sharing services, showing that this tremendous social good can be both commercially successful and an incredible addition to communities.

The Adelaide operations started at my kitchen table. From there I recruited, trained and developed the team, secured a permanent location, oversaw expansion to many local government areas and planned out a path towards strong profitability.

When ofo imploded globally, I was made redundant along with my team and thousands of other staff members. I was deeply proud of our exit from the Adelaide market; through innovative resource recovery and liquidation of our local assets we made sure that every bill was paid, every bike was collected and that the fleet found a new home.

Uber

As the UberEATS Operations Manager, I was responsible for getting meals from our restaurant-partners' kitchens to their customers. This was an extremely diverse role that included attracting and retaining delivery-partners, ensuring their efficient deployment across the city, maintaining delivery reliability and ensuring the restaurants, consumers and delivery-partners had a fantastic experience using the UberEATS platform to earn money or get great food delivered.

I left Uber to join OFO and launch their Australian operations.

My role at Essense Designs sits within the Business Systems team. Our business systems are the core of our operations, and this is a challenging time as the business grows and evolves dramatically. I work on diverse projects that aim at creating a culture of innovative, reducing costs, improving margins and lowering risk. This gives me exposure to all parts of the business including procurement, production, customer services, sales, marketing, finance, IT and other operational teams. I view my team and the other parts of this business as my clients, working hard to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all parts of the business.

As the Business Operations Manager, I was responsible for improving the company’s operational and administrative processes, and leading process improvement projects linked to the organisational strategy. In effect, I was responsible for operations from the first stage of product development through to the product being available to our stores.

At Oratos Consult, I support their sustainability team to deliver advice, auditing, and other services to commercial and industrial at a strategic level.

In many ways, Oratos can help draw the roadmap that Renewcorp will deliver on; and The Clockwork Cloud underpins my engagement with both, making this a very harmonious and mutually supportive structure. This allows me to deliver on my commitment to reshaping Australia's business landscape by making connections—between people, ideas, and opportunities—to create sustainable value for all stakeholders.

And all of this stems from my conviction that economic success and environmental stewardship are complementary, not competing priorities.
