2016 vs 2026: you had to be there

Ten years ago, I was a young adult living in Berlin, fresh out of school, working in Finance and already certain it wasn’t for me.

After a trip to Indonesia, I became curious about tech. While living in Italy, I started learning to code: 2 to 4 hours every day, teaching myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

That led me to design, and eventually to Webflow, where I finally felt the freedom to build and create.

I started freelancing on Upwork. It was barely making money, but I kept going.

One small project after another, until one day, I met Sina Sadegh, a client who would later become the co-founder of magier.

Looking back now, everything changed because I followed my curiosity and stayed committed to learning.

Two days of references. Two weeks of designing.

Here's what we landed on.

The moodboard had 200+ pieces. Motion patterns. Typography. Color. Layouts. Interactions worth studying.

Most of it got thrown away.

That's the point.

The references aren't a blueprint. They're a compass. You gather enough to know the direction, then you walk somewhere new.

I used to feel guilty about this. Hours of research that never makes it into the final thing. Felt wasteful.

Now I see it differently.

The work that didn't make it shaped the work that did. Every rejected direction narrowed the focus. Every dead end pointed toward the right path.

The design you see isn't what I planned. It's what I discovered.

At the start of my freelance career, I put 4 months into a website for a small carpeting company. I was highly underpaid.

Most people would have rushed it. Tiny client, no prestige, no budget.

I treated it like it was for Nike.

I posted it on Awwwards. It got some eye balls. People reached out. That led to all kind of projects. That led to BodyArmor and Coca-Cola. 

One project opened every door.

Here's what I learned: The extra mile matters most when nobody's watching. Because someone always is. You just don't know who yet.

That's the kind of standard I set for myself but also for Good Fella. 

Big or small. It doesn't matter.

We're rebuilding the Good Fella website.

Before opening Figma, I spent two days doing nothing but gathering references. Not because it's required, but because skipping this step has burned me before.

Here's what the board looks like:

→ Motion patterns from sites I admire
→ Typography pairings that feel right
→ Color approaches that match our energy
→ Layouts that break the grid without breaking usability
→ Micro-interactions worth stealing

I used to skip this part. Open a blank canvas, start pushing pixels, figure it out as I go. That's how you end up redesigning the same section four times because something feels off but you can't explain why.

Two days of gathering saves two weeks of second-guessing. You front-load the thinking so the designing goes faster, and you have something to point to when a direction isn't working.

Every good site I've shipped started with a folder of things that inspired me. Not to copy, but to understand what works and why.

The GIF attached is my reference board for the new Good Fella site. Obsessive? Probably. But the best work comes from knowing where you're headed before you start.

We're building the Good Fella. Here's what the loading screen looks like.

Two hands reaching in from the edges. Rendered entirely in ASCII characters.

The effect converts any image to text in real-time. Pixel brightness maps to character density. Dark areas get heavy characters like @ and #. Light areas get dots and commas.

But static ASCII feels flat. So we layered on interaction.

Typewriter reveal:
-> Characters appear with the original photo colors first
-> Brand color washes over with a slight delay
-> Each row has its own timing. Feels organic, not mechanical.

Mouse hover:
-> Move your cursor and the original image bleeds through
-> Edges aren't clean circles. They're blobby and irregular.
-> Gives it that gooey, liquid feel.

Depth parallax:
-> We painted depth maps for each hand
-> Closer areas shift more when you move your mouse
-> Subtle 3D. No actual 3D geometry.

The whole thing runs on Three.js with a custom GLSL shader.

This is just the loading screen. We're weaving the ASCII effect throughout the entire site.

One visual language. Everywhere.

I found the first website I ever designed.

I've designed that in Photoshop, back in 2018. Never went live, because of obvious reasons.

I'm going to do something that scares me a little.

We want to build Good Fella in public.

Not the polished version. Not the "everything is going great" version. The real one.

Here's the truth: we started this studio three months ago. My brother Adrian Fella and I. We left stable situations because we believed we could build something better.

And so far? January was slow. Really slow. We spent most of it building our own website (which looks sick btw). We have a small pipeline but nothing crazy. Some weeks I wonder if we made the right call.

Most agency owners would never admit this. You're supposed to project success. Fake it till you make it. Never show weakness. To anyone.

But here's why we're doing it anyway.

The clients I actually want to work with can smell bullshit. They'd rather know who they're hiring than be sold a fantasy. And I'd rather attract people who value honesty than pretend to be something we're not.

So fuck it. We're going the other way.

From now on, I'm sharing what's actually happening. The wins and the losses. The projects that work out and the ones that don't. The months where we crush it and the months where we barely pay rent.

I don't know if this is smart. It might scare off clients. It might make us look small.

But that's fine. Those aren't my people anyway.
