→ Taste is still king
→ Good design / packaging is now a commodity
→ Not much true “innovation” - very few surprises
→ The breakfast category is under-served; big oppy
→ This industry has great humans; more collegial than others
→ Nutritional “no man’s land” is a death sentence; pick a lane
→ Most big booths have been in the game a while; build to last
→ Booths are only as valuable as how engaging folks at them are
→ Meat sticks are now ultra-competitive; chicken's having a moment

CRITICAL CAVEAT: true insight into brands is *entirely invisible* at at Expo cuz it's under the hood. Supply chain creativity, manufacturing excellence, cash management, media buying efficiency, SG&A streamlining, negotiation prowess, contracting strategy, etc. etc. etc.

If the "engine" isn't assembled and maintained right, trends don't matter.

Today I witnessed a non-negligible cohort of folks walk out of Natural Products Expo West and immediately light up a cig.

Humans are an interesting bunch.

Extremely niche Expo observation…

Lithuania goes hard in the paint.

Must’ve dropped a milly on 100 feet of booth space plus an army of people.

Never forget - you aren’t just competing with rival cookie / chip / bar startups.

You’re competing with entire Baltic states.

You know the clunky aspects of CPG you hate?

Which means clunk is now a feature, not a bug.

Embrace it.

"Mainstream weird" is the best brand positioning.

If you're too mainstream, you'll get knocked-off into oblivion.

If you're too weird, you'll never achieve major scale.

Mainstream weird is juuusssttt right.

Optionality is the desired end state.

But FLEXIBILITY is how you get there.

Create maximally flexible products. And positioning. And teams.

Heck, ensure your OWN BRAIN is maximally flexible. (Can you learn new stuff quickly? Can you change your mind quickly in light of new data?)

In today's environment where the chess board is violently shaken up on an annual basis, the most flexible player adapts best.

And...over time...wins.

If you're seeing a site outage right now, your campaigns haven't paused automatically and we're still seeing ads appear in search, although product pages are down. 

Here's what to do immediately:
For Sponsored Products: Set account-level budget caps to $1. This effectively shuts them off without manually pausing hundreds of campaigns.

For Sponsored Brands & Sponsored Display: Pause them directly. Budget caps don't apply the same way.

We've already done this across all of our client accounts and notified clients. 

We're monitoring and will revert as soon as Amazon is back up.

Using +Bluetooth +Wireless means both words MUST appear in the search..

but "headphones" can be swapped out for synonyms like "earbuds" or "in-ear." 

You get the discovery benefits of broad match with the precision of exact. 

This modified broad match approach lets Amazon's algorithm do its thing while keeping your core intent locked in. 

More relevant impressions, less wasted spend.

Pro tip: Pull your best-performing search terms from your Sponsored Product reports and use them to seed these campaigns.

The catch?

Prime-eligible offers only.

If your Prime rate isn’t near 100%, you’re invisible to this demand.

Are you monitoring price-trigger velocity?

Because this is Amazon testing fully automated buying behavior.

Average brands react to demand.

Smart brands engineer it.

Don’t realize this after you’re out of stock.

If you’re running serious volume and want to build systems around this shift..

Let’s talk.

Stop asking for the “right” DSP percentage.

It’s the wrong question.

Founders ask it constantly.

“What % of spend should go to DSP?”

They want a benchmark.

10%.
15%.
Maybe 20% if they’re feeling aggressive.

Cool.

Now ignore it.

Because that number tells you absolutely nothing about whether DSP will work for your brand.

Here’s the real question:

Is your audience big enough to justify the budget you’re about to spend?

Most brands never check.

They decide they should “try DSP”, 

throw $3K or $5K at it, and hope something happens.

Nothing does.

Not because DSP is broken.

Because the math never worked.

What we do instead is painfully simple.

First, audit the catalog.

Not every product survives the DSP meat grinder. 

We find the ones that actually can.

Then we map the audience.

Who are we targeting, and why?

Then we check the numbers.

Amazon literally shows you the audience size and the budget required to reach a meaningful chunk of that group.

That’s the number that matters.

And here’s what happens most of the time.

A brand wants to “test DSP” with a small budget.

We build the audience.

We run the reach estimate.

And the result is obvious.

That budget won’t even move the needle.

Low reach.
Low frequency.
No impact.

You’re buying impressions that barely exist.

If the math says it takes $20K to reach the audience properly, a $3K test doesn’t prove anything.

It just proves you underfunded the channel.

DSP works when the budget matches the audience.

If it doesn’t, keep the money in search where intent already exists.

Scaling to 8 figures requires clarity.

Not benchmarks.

So the real question is this:

Are you running DSP because a blog told you to…

Or because the numbers actually make sense?

If you think DSP is a magic revenue button, 

think twice.

Those 20x ROAS screenshots?

Almost always retargeting.

Not cold traffic.

Not prospecting.

Not some genius media buying hack.

It’s warm audiences:
– Viewed product
– Added to cart
– Previous buyers

That’s demand that already exists.

Of course it converts.

Here’s the part brands don’t want to hear:

DSP will not fix your low conversion rate.

If your listing is weak…
If your offer is unclear…
If your reviews are shaky…

DSP just sends more paid traffic to the problem.

And now you’re losing money faster.

DSP is not a rescue tool.

It’s an expansion tool.

You use it when:
• Your product already converts
• Your unit economics make sense
• You understand your customer lifetime value
• You want to scale beyond Sponsored Ads

That’s when DSP shines.

Massive segmentation.

Off-site reach.

Competitor retargeting.

Lifestyle and in-market audiences most brands ignore.

But remember this:
Traffic amplifies performance.
It doesn’t create it.

If your product is a winner, DSP pours fuel on the fire.

If it’s a loser, DSP pours fuel on the loss.

That’s the game.

Build winners first.

Then scale them aggressively.

An average brand uses DSP hoping to fix sales.

A smart brand uses DSP to accelerate profit.

Great… but that’s only one piece of the story.

In 2026, looking at campaign ACoS alone is one of the fastest ways to misunderstand your real performance.

A few things I always check right after someone shows me a “great” ACoS:

→ Return rate per product
→ Total ACoS (ad spend vs total revenue)
→ Actual profitability per unit

Because here’s the reality:

A product with low ACoS but high returns can quietly destroy your margins.

And if you only optimize ads based on ACoS..

you might be scaling something that loses money every time it sells.

Low ACoS + high returns = losing money with a smile on your face.

The brands winning on Amazon right now are not just optimizing ads.

They’re optimizing profitability across the entire funnel.

Tag a seller who still celebrates ACoS without checking the rest. 😂
