Strategic Business Manager - Visy Industries

General Manager for Visy Plastics which was an important and large Visy business in 2012 with $500m pa revenue, 14 factories in Aust, NZ and Asia and 1000+ employees. We delivered a significant transformational turn around of a flailing business after the beverage industry had moved to making their own PET bottles on-site instead of Visy producing them. Focus was on implementing new technology solutions and leveraging existing strategic Visy customer relationships to replace lost revenue of around $200m pa. Brilliant strategic planning, implementing global best practise technology with partners , effective capital management and high performance team creation were proud outcomes from 3 challenging years as an operational GM in a key Visy business. We first stemmed the bleeding then built a solid ongoing business for Visy by the end of 2015. One of the unique experiences of this role was working closely with Global CEO Anthony Pratt on a fortnightly basis to solve a significant strategic issue for the business of the prior to 2011 poor performance of the Visy Plastics business under prior management.

General Manager - Visy Plastics

I was asked by COO John Murphy to set up this role as a result of a view that Visy would benefit from focusing effectively on their key customer relationships like large FMCG companies did with the key Retailers in Australia. Over two years it was deemed a very significant success uncovering $m for both Coca Cola Amatil and Visy through a significant relationship shift from completely transactional to complete strategic partnership. Quite simply I worked with key CCA and Visy leaders to explore then implement shared value. There was plenty to leverage in a $200m+ revenue partnership! 

As a result of this pioneering work at CCA, Visy then employed 10 people to manage the top 30 customers who were worth more than 75% of Visy revenue. 

On the way through this process I was fortunate to be awarded Coca Cola Amatil Account Director of the Year 2010 & Visy were named CCA Supplier of the Year 2010 for which I am still chuffed. We created a significant change in the way we operated together and generated very significant financial and operational benefits together!

Strategic Business Manager

Completed commercial deals across all of the beverage market for primary packaging for 100+ customers in Australia, New Zealand and Asia & Pacific. Led development of new technology and product streams and recruited then developed a talented team. Negotiated 1000+ PET, Other Plastics, Aluminium Cans, Steel Cans and Milk or Juice Carton deals over 5 years and was an important management team member for Beverage Packaging. Revenue increased from $300m to $800m pa from 2004 to 2009 as we gained market share in every Primary Packaging category we competed in. Over these years we went from being very much an external business for Visy to one that was strategically important for their key Australasian clients to build the fibre as well as the non fibre Primary Packaging businesses. By 2010 the Primary Packaging business was close to 30% of Visy Australasia revenue and was nicely profitable! Fun times of transformation as the Visy business flourished in the time leading upto transfer to the third family generation as Richard Pratt died and handed over to Anthony Pratt.

Cleaned up the Brand Portfolio from 150 brands to 7 iconic core brands Dairy Farmers, Lite White, Shape, Dare, Oak, Ski and Coon (soon to be something else!) with brilliant future strategies and clear 5 Year Plans. Recruited and managed an exceptionally high performance team 60 Sales & Marketing Professionals to implement the key business short and long term strategies. We increased sales from innovation products from 1% revenue to 10% of revenue. We worked with Boston Consulting and a team from Dairy Farmers to identify $100m of cost savings and then we got to implement them in the business. Following this review I was appointed Chief Marketing Officer and also was appointed Divisional GM for Dairy Foods and Cheese with P&L responsibility. We delivered significant transformation through Diary deregulation and significant revenue and profitability gains. I led leadership teams throughout my time at Dairy Farmers.
