I'll never forget the dream job I thought I had locked down. And then ghosted. 


Four rounds of interviews. Met with the hiring manager twice. Presented to the team.

My client Jessica came to me after being passed over for a promotion three times in two years.

Same manager every time. Same excuse every time.

“You’re not quite ready yet.”

Meanwhile, she was training the people getting promoted over her. Running projects her manager took credit for.

She’d spent two years trying to prove herself to people who’d already decided not to see her value.

“Maybe I’m just not as good as I think I am,” she told me.

Here’s what I told her: You’re not the problem. You’re just at the wrong table.

We built her exit strategy. Updated her resume. Optimized her LinkedIn. Targeted companies where her skills would actually be valued.

Six weeks later, she had two offers. Both paid more than her current role. Both came with the title she’d been chasing for two years.

I’ve watched people stay in the wrong job because they were scared of being called a “job hopper.”


Not because they were happy.

Because someone told them that leaving too soon would ruin their career.

So they stayed.

-Another year going through the motions.
-Another annual review that led nowhere. 
-Another promise of growth that never came.

All to avoid a label that most good hiring managers don’t even care about.

Here’s what I know after a decade of coaching people through this:

Job hopping doesn’t mean someone is unstable.

It means they know what they bring to the table and refuse to settle for less.

I’ve had clients with four jobs in five years. 

Every single move was a step up. 

More pay. Better culture. Work that actually excited them.

-They weren’t running away from something.
-They were running toward something better.

Some recruiter once told me I was a “job hopper” because I switched jobs three times in two years.

I'm done watching capable people stay miserable because they're worried about how their resume will look.

Grinding away at roles that drain them. All because conventional wisdom says you need to hit some magic two-year mark or you're "uncommitted."

That thinking is outdated. And it's trapping talented people in the wrong places.

Here's the reality of those three moves:

❌ First company? Figured out in four months the environment was dysfunctional and offered zero advancement. Walked away.

❌ Second company? Decent bump in pay, but management was a mess. Walked away.

✅ Third company? Found the right match. Remote setup and nearly double what I started with.

Every transition was on purpose. Every step moved me toward what I actually wanted to build.

The reality is, exiting quickly isn't careless. It's knowing what you won't settle for.

The leaders worth working for don't hold it against you for walking away from bad situations fast.

They appreciate that you know your value and won't compromise on it.

Exit what's wrong quickly. Find what's right faster.

That's not instability. That's strategy.

You’re allowed to outgrow what you’re known for.

Your job.
Your resume.
Even your reputation.

Where you start doesn’t have to limit where you finish.

At some point, growth feels uncomfortable.

You walk into work and something feels off.

The role that used to stretch you now feels small.
The problems feel repetitive.
The praise feels routine.

That discomfort is not random.

It is information.

It is pointing you toward your next move.

Most people ignore it.

They tell themselves they should be grateful.
They remind themselves the pay is good.
They stay because it is familiar.

But growth rarely feels comfortable.

It feels risky.
It feels uncertain.
It feels like you might disappoint people who only know you one way.

You are allowed to grow beyond your current identity.

If you are known as the operations person, you can build strategy skills.

If you are known as the quiet executor, you can become the one who leads meetings.

If you are known for one function, you can start learning the next one before you are given the title.

Reinvention does not start with a new job.

It starts with a decision.

A decision to stop settling for being good at what is easy.

Look at the skills you already have.

Communication.
Project ownership.
Data analysis.
Client management.

Ask yourself where those same skills could create a bigger impact.

Then start acting in that direction before anyone gives you permission.

Volunteer for a cross functional project.

Ask to present the update instead of sending the email.

Have the conversation about the role you want next.

Build proof in small ways.

That is how your identity shifts in real time.

What you are known for today is based on your past actions.

What you build tomorrow is based on the actions you choose now.

A growth mindset is not a quote on a wall.

It is choosing expansion over comfort.

Again and again.

So be honest with yourself:

Are you staying loyal to an old version of you,

Marketing is the hardest job that looks easy.

I spent 10 years in global marketing at L'Oréal and Johnson & Johnson.

From the outside, it looked simple:
→ Run some ads.
→ Plan some content.
→ Launch a campaign.

Easy, right?

Wrong.

Here's what people don't see:

You're managing a P&L worth millions.
You're influencing decisions across countries.
You're balancing brand strategy with quarterly targets.
You're defending budget cuts while proving ROI.
You're translating consumer insights into creative work.

Marketing is constant pressure.

Every choice has tradeoffs.
Every win creates a new expectation.
Every miss is remembered longer than it should be.

Everyone has an opinion on marketing.

Very few carry the accountability when numbers fall short.

This is also why personal branding gets misunderstood.

It looks like “just posting”.

In reality, it demands:

→ Staying consistent when results lag behind effort.

Nobody cares about your job title.

They care about what you actually do.

You can have the most impressive title in the building.

But if you're not delivering? 
It means nothing.

Titles don't get you promoted. 
Work ethic does.

Showing up earlier. Staying later. Solving problems nobody asked you to solve.

That's what separates the people who rise from the people who stall.

Here's what nobody tells you about work ethic: 

1. It's visible even when you think it's not 
↳ People notice who follows up without being asked. 
↳ That reputation gets built before any title does.

2. It compounds faster than skill 
↳ Skill takes years. Trust takes months.

3. It follows you when you leave

A title tells people where you sit in the org chart.

Work ethic tells people whether you're worth betting on.

The most dangerous person in any room isn't the expert.

It's the person who never stops learning.

Most executives think the edge is having more expertise.

More credentials. More years. More proof on the shelf.

But that's not what gets you noticed.

The real edge?
How fast you can turn what you know into what people see.

Credentials might open the door.
Learning speed decides who stays in the room.

Here’s what that looked like for me in real life.

In 2024, I walked away from a $200k corporate role.

I didn’t just change jobs.
I changed the rules of how I earned trust, attention, and income.

I had to relearn things overnight, that most people never ever practice.

↳ How to talk to strangers and turn that into real conversations?
↳ How to explain my value without a brand name behind me?
↳ How to build something people actually cared about?
↳ How to hear “no” on a daily basis and keep going?

Nothing about that came from my resume.
It came from learning by doing.

Then 2025 taught me the hard way: 

Life got messy.
The calendar got packed.
Energy hit zero.

And that's when it clicked for me.
When you stop learning, growth doesn't just slow down.

It flatlines.

So I completely changed my approach to learning.

I didn't consume more.
I didn't sign up for more courses.

What I did instead:

↳ Picked one thing each week to test and actually watched what happened.
↳ Started asking smarter questions instead of hunting for more answers.
↳ Made quick adjustments instead of defending what wasn't working.
↳ Listened to the feedback that made me uncomfortable.

Here's what I've learned about people who keep growing:

They stay curious longer than they stay convinced.

Experts protect what they already know.
Learners protect their ability to grow.

If you truly want to make a difference: 

Pick one skill you’re bad at right now.

Use it in real situations, pay attention to the results, 
and improve as you go.

That’s how learning turns into leverage.

Clarity on:

Why do you care?
Who will you help?
Why are you different?

What problem do you solve?

When people know exactly what you stand for,
decisions get easier.

Introductions happen faster.
Opportunities feel aligned.
Trust builds naturally.

You stop chasing.

People start coming to you.

And here’s the hard truth…

If I asked 10 people in your network what you’re known for
Would they give the same answer?

Or 10 different ones?

So ask yourself:
What do people actually know you for? 

If that answer isn’t clear,
your personal brand isn’t either.
