In the last 8 years I Co-Founded 4 different recruitment businesses.

The first business taught me how hard entrepreneurship actually is.
The second almost bankrupted me. 
The third taught me to focus on my fourth business.
The fourth is now a global recruitment company spread over 3 continents.

Back in 2015 I knew nothing about entrepreneurship or the recruitment industry. I had no real network and struggled with 'being my own boss' for the first time. 

I had no real strategy. I was stuck in planning vs. doing. I made countless mistakes. I often felt lost what to focus on. 

But I loved (almost) every minute of it.

I tried many different things and am now my third and fourth businesses are by many means successful.

But the work is never done. 

Entrepreneurship is a never ending road of problem solving and working outside of your comfort zone.

It's outside of this comfort zone that growth really happens. 

I am therefore on a mission to inspire people to get outside of their comfort zone. The first step is always the hardest. 

I therefore post daily on my entrepreneurship, business and my personal life to inspire others to take that first step.

I attended Burning Man in 2017 for the second time and on the first night I ran into Olya. It was love at first sight. 
After 3.5 years of long distance and flying back and forth every 3 weeks I moved to New York in 2021 for her. Burning Man changed the course of my life completely. 

Will I ever come back to Europe? Never say never, but I deem it very unlikely. 

In the summer of 2018 I invited Maarten van der Kwaak for a beer to talk him through the idea I had for Matchr and hear his thoughts. It turned out he was working on the same idea and we decided to pursue this idea together. 

Four months later I moved to Kyiv, Ukraine and now 7 years later we have employees in 17 different countries.

What has been a life changing moment for you?

Matchr's journey has been an absolute rollercoaster. Let me tell you why. 

In the fall of 2018 we started Matchr in Kyiv, Ukraine with the idea to disrupt the recruitment industry.

We worked our *sses off and grew to 24 employees by the end of 2019. A pretty incredible feat if you take into account that Maarten van der Kwaak and I had never worked as a recruiter, we had never been to Ukraine before deciding to set up our company there and we didn’t know what the difference was between front end and backend.

Yet, by the end of 2019 we were making plans to grow to 50 employees by the end of 2020.

 Little did we know that the world had different plans.

When COVID shut the world down, we lost 70% of our revenue in two weeks. To survive we had to let 60% of our employees go.

Instead of doubling in size our focus was on survival. The only reason we survived is that we landed TikTok as a new client and because we worked crazy hours.

Little did we know, that 2021 would be one of the craziest years in recruitment history. Due to global government stimulation packages and 0% interest rates every company was hiring. 

A golden time for an RPO company like ours. For several months recruiters were the hottest vacancy on the market. We grew rapidly, raised our prices 3 times and were constantly sold out. At the end of 2021 we were again making plans to double in size in 2022...

We should have known better by now but nothing prepared us for the invasion of Russia into Ukraine. 

At the time a third of our company was Ukrainian and overnight they went from working for some of the most amazing companies in the world, to fleeing for their lives. 

A few months later interest rates went up and the hiring boom came to a grinding halt.

2022 and 2023 were again about survival and for some of our employees that meant literally...

This experience, scarred us deeply and it took us 10 months into 2024 to acknowledge that we were on track to have our best year ever. 

We deliberately didn’t plan for 2025 to double, but took a more conservative approach. 

Yet, with just 1.5 months to go we will more than double in size this year and know that we will do the same again next year based on our current contracts. 

These last 8 years have taught me many valuable lessons. Unfortunately, I know that good times come to an end but so will the bad.

I have learned to focus on the things that I can control and not get too caught up in wars, interest rates and trade wars that are outside of my influence.

The last 8 years have been an absolute rollercoaster ride but something I would have never wanted to miss.

📸 Found this photo from October 2018 when I just moved to Kyiv to open up our first office. Little did I know what journey lay ahead of us :).

After hosting more than 20 talent leader dinners in my home I have learned 6 things to make every dinner unique and stand out...

Here are 6 learnings.
1. Start with clear start and end time. Ever since I added "doors close at 6:30 PM" people show up on time. People are now even texting me that they might be one minute late. That's what you want.

2. Share up front who is coming. This will give people comfort and makes it less likely people will cancel last minute.

3. Co-host. This avoids doing all the work yourself but also opens up other networks that you might not be exposed to.

4. Curate the conversation. I love the format of a single conversation. It allows for everyone to speak equally and for deeper and more meaningful connections. 

5. Do something or create something unique. In my case it's three things. I invite people into my home. We cook together. We eat in our living room / art gallery overlooking the highline. 

6. Focus on quality not quantity. 20% of the people that attend my dinners are people that responded to a cold outreach on LinkedIn. They respond and attend because they are trigged that the dinner takes place in my home and because of the 8 other guests that are attending. 

-> Quality people attract quality people.

I used to think meaningful connections happened by accident.

A few years ago, I realized the people who thrive aren’t the ones who collect contacts…

Here’s what changed everything for me:

I stopped pretending and started being vulnerable.
The moment you show who you really are, people meet you there.

I began doing things that spark curiosity.
Run a marathon. Walk for 24 hours.
Do something interesting, and people lean in.

I pushed myself into rooms where I knew no one.
Events. Conferences. Alone.
Discomfort is a magnet. It forces you to grow.

I shared what I was building.
When people know what you stand for, they find you.

I focused on being known for good work.
Credibility travels faster than any elevator pitch.

And then I became a connector.
The spider in the web.
Always asking:
Who in my world can help this person right now?

That’s when everything shifted.

Because connection isn’t about collecting people.
It’s about lifting them.

And when you do that consistently…
The right people always show up.

I just hired a powerhouse CPO at Matchr. Her early feedback? Most founders sabotage their own scaling in just two ways...


Ego.
The ego of the founder(s) get in the way of a company reaching its full potential. Success clutters their view. They stop to listen. They get distracted by shiny objects. They carried away with all the attention and they start to believe too much in their own wisdom. 

Fear.
The fear to make decisions or to make decisions out of fear. "We need to adopt AI!!" "We need to fire as many people as possible". "I will get back to you...". "Let me think about that...". As you scale your are not as agile anymore. Decisions have a much larger impact and need to be treated carefully but have to be made.

No one remembers rejections; it only takes one 'yes' to change it all. But don't take my word for it. 

- The Beatles were turned down by Decca Records executive, Dick Rowe, who believed that 'guitar groups were on the way out' and that 'they had no future in show business'.
- Michael Jordan didn't make it to his high school basketball team
- Lady Gaga got dropped by her record label, Island Def Jam, after three months
- James Dyson had 5,126 failed prototypes of his 'bagless vacuum cleaner' before the next one worked.

Your rejection is only a forgotten step on the road to your next big 'yes'. 

The one that really matters!

Last week I attended a keynote with Anne Mahlum the founder of Solidcore (sold for $100M) and On Your Feet. Four things stood out.

1. If you give yourself a reason to quite. You will quite. 
When Anne started Solidcore an investor approached her to buy 25% of her shares for $75,000. Anne had saved $150,000 and the $75K gave her the option to preserve 50% of her net worth. A lot of money for her at the time.

She decided to go all in as she knew that when she put all of her money on the line she would do whatever it takes to make Solidcore into a success. 

Burn the boats and never look back. 

2. Set specific deadlines and create clarity.
When Anne started On Your Feet she learned to set clear deadlines when the team would open up a new city to role out On Your Feet. She used these deadlines both internally and externally. 

Only when she started to be clear when a new city had to be open, her team started to work with a better focus and was able to attract the right sponsors right away. 

Nobody is interested if you say that you will open somewhere in the spring of next year. People are when you say the 1st of March next year.

3. When you scale a business your role as the CEO changes every 6 months.
The first 6 months of Solidcore Anne was still teaching classes. When Anne sold Solidcore for $100M she wasn't even the CEO anymore. She constantly hired people to take over her role so she could focus on the culture, vision and hire the right people to get there.

4. Stay focused.
When On Your Feet and Solidcore became a success many people came up with ideas to add new workouts or disciplines. "let's add swimming" "Let's add a hit class workout". She turned down all of these initiatives. Focus on what works and become exceptional at this.
