Service Businesses Create Employment. Product Businesses Create Scalable Wealth.

India’s services sector contributes ~55% of GDP, and that has powered employment, exports, and middle-class expansion.
But structurally, there’s a difference.

In most service businesses, revenue scales with headcount, with labour being the primary supply driver. Growth is often linear, and wage inflation directly impacts margins.

In product businesses, revenue scales with demand. The growth might become non-linear as technology and automation expand supply, without proportional increases in headcount.

As India moves toward higher per capita income and global competitiveness, a strategic shift is important: 

Competing on labour costs builds scale.
Competing on intellectual property builds wealth.

If revenue growth depends on hiring, you are expanding.
If revenue growth depends on demand, you are scaling.

The real question for Indian boardrooms is not service vs product. It is: 
Are we building businesses constrained by labour supply or powered by scalable demand?

We were talking through the usual startup chaos. Data everywhere. Spreadsheets upon spreadsheets. Excel files are growing heavier every week. More sensors, more locations, more confusion.

At some point, one of my friends said something that was too obvious:

“Why are you still doing this on Excel?
Why don’t you just build software for it?”

We had thought about it before.
But hearing it said out loud, in that moment, made it impossible to ignore.

Excel was fine when the data was small.
It completely broke when the scale showed up.

That conversation didn’t magically create Envizom overnight. But it shifted how we looked at the problem. We stopped asking how to manage data better and started asking how to design a system that could actually live with it.

That’s where Envizom really began.

Not as a grand product vision, but as a very practical response to growing pain.

Looking back, I realise this happens more often than we admit.

The right idea is usually already floating around.
It just needs the right moment, the right frustration, and someone saying it plainly enough for it to click.

That’s why I still value these conversations so much.
Some things start when Excel finally gives up.

Dubai is building AI. India is deploying it. Both are winning but for very different reasons.

I just got back from Dubai. I spoke to a robot that sounded like ChatGPT. An actual deployed service.

That experience made me think hard about why two countries, with equal AI ambition, are taking completely opposite bets.

— The UAE built Falcon, an LLM that beat Meta and Google on launch day.
— They committed $300M to keep building it.
— Their goal: become the world's AI infrastructure provider.

Makes sense. When you have $1.5 trillion in sovereign wealth and 3.5 million people, you buy talent, build models, and export influence.

— India launched a $1.25B IndiaAI Mission, not to build the next GPT, but to put AI in the hands of farmers, patients, students, and small business owners.
— BHASHINI now supports 35+ Indian languages with 1,600+ AI models.
— 80% of Indian companies treat AI as a core priority.
— Indian SMBs using AI? 78% report revenue growth.

Makes sense. When you have 1.4 billion people, a 14x-growth AI workforce, and the world's second-largest developer community, you build solutions, not just models.

Different contexts. Different strategies. Both rational.

The question isn't who's doing AI right.
The question is: are YOU building AI that reflects YOUR context, or just copying someone else's playbook?
