Great event on design and engineering at Shopify’s Montreal office 🤩

Key takeaways:
1. “Design engineer” is not a title the Shopify team is currently hiring for. It means the team looks for designers with an engineering mindset and vibecoding skills, and engineers with taste and a strong design point of view.
2. As designers, try not to tie jobs to titles. The old mindset, “I’m a UX designer, not a graphic designer,” no longer works. The lines are blurring.
3. Shopify’s design teams already use Cursor, vibecoding, and prototyping in an internal product playground, and are expected to ship PRs to production.
4. Designers should keep an artistic point of view and lead with taste. Follow our curiosity, and learn new tools.
5. The highest leverage now is to learn from AI, don’t outsource thinking. Go down the rabbit hole of coding, fill our blind spots, and educate ourselves with AI.

Stay curious, master the craft, start shipping small. In the end, “Good tools make a skilled craftsman better. They will not make a poorly skilled craftsman great.”

While working at MindSea, an agency specializing in iOS app design and development, I encountered the challenge of discerning user pain points and providing effective design solutions for various projects. One of the notable projects I worked on was the 99 Walks App, aimed at helping lobstermen record and monitor trawls efficiently. Additionally, I contributed to a transit app commissioned by the Canadian Government, which required careful attention to user needs and governmental requirements.

To address these challenges, I took proactive steps to understand the unique requirements of each project and the specific pain points of the target users. I conducted extensive research to gather insights into user behavior, preferences, and industry standards. Collaborating closely with stakeholders, including clients and development teams, I facilitated brainstorming sessions and design workshops to ideate and refine solutions that would effectively address user needs and business objectives.

In my role, I focused on crafting intuitive information architecture and visually appealing designs that would enhance the overall user experience.

The outcome of my efforts was highly successful, resulting in the delivery of exceptional iOS apps that met or exceeded client expectations. For the 99 Walks App, the implementation of user-centric design principles led to improved usability and efficiency for lobstermen, ultimately streamlining their trawl recording and monitoring processes. As for the transit app commissioned by the Canadian Government, my contributions helped create a user-friendly interface that facilitated easy navigation and access to essential transit information for citizens, contributing to increased user satisfaction and adoption rates. Overall, my actions contributed to the successful delivery of impactful digital solutions that positively impacted both users and clients.

Proposify

In my role at Proposify, I encountered the challenge of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposal software by addressing user feedback and designing new features. Additionally, there was a need to develop a new pricing model and enhance the overall user experience of the app and editor.

To overcome these challenges, I took several strategic actions. First, I gathered extensive user feedback to identify pain points and areas for improvement within the software. Using this feedback as a foundation, I collaborated closely with the product manager, engineers, and marketing team to conceptualize and design new features that would address user needs and enhance the functionality of the app.

One significant action I took was to develop and design a new per seat pricing model for 2019, aligning with market trends and user preferences. Additionally, I implemented a signature and form fields feature based on user requirements, creating production-ready prototypes for the engineering team to implement effectively.

Throughout the process, I maintained a collaborative approach, facilitating design reviews with stakeholders across all parts of the software to ensure alignment with business goals and user expectations. I also created InVision mock-ups and oversaw production specs to ensure the accurate implementation of design elements.

Core projects I worked on were new purchase plans for per-seat pricing, Plan billing trails, upgrade/downgrade contact funnels, Signature fields, Manual proposal totals, Desktop / mobile preview improvements, Presentation mode, Proposal pipeline/snapshot view, New audit trail & log feature.

Additionally, I worked on diverse projects, including identity and branding for Smaaash, environmental graphics for malls and facilities, and corporate brochures for SBI and L&T, showcasing versatility and adaptability in my design approach.

As a result of these actions, I achieved significant outcomes in my role as a graphic designer at Rediffusion. The dynamic pitch presentations and print campaigns I developed contributed to successful client engagements and strengthened brand positioning for clients across various industries.
