Hi, I’m Aayush Banka.

I work in consulting and write about career strategy, entrance exams (like CAT, XAT, etc.), internships, and early-career decision making, especially for students and young professionals trying to make sense of confusing choices.

I’m a Commerce graduate from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), University of Delhi, and currently pursuing my MBA at MDI Gurgaon. I also have 2 years of experience as a Consultant in political consulting, where I worked on strategy, research, and execution across public policy and governance-focused projects.

I got referrals from people working at McKinsey & Company and Goldman Sachs when I was looking for a job in my third year.

What did I do differently to get referrals from these people?

Nothing extraordinary, I just followed these basic steps:

• Connected with 40-50 people working at the company as Associates or Managers.

• Sent them a message that included greetings, a brief introduction, and the reason I reached out.

No time waste and straight to the point.

• When asked for my resume, I made sure to share my cover letter as well.

• If I didn’t receive a reply, I simply moved on to the next set of people.

That’s it!

Then, why doesn’t everyone get referrals from the people they reach out to if it's that simple?

Because most of us quit too early.

Your message or resume may be ignored, but as a candidate, you have to keep trying and putting in the effort.

My interview experience at SPJIMR SP Jain Institute of Management & Research! 👦

My interview was scheduled at their New Delhi branch, in the morning slot around 10-11 am.

SPJIMR Mumbai follows group interviews, unlike typical personal interviews or group discussions. 5 candidates including me were interviewed together.

The interview started with brief introductions, followed by a few questions linked directly to what we shared about ourselves.

Most candidates came from finance backgrounds, so the discussion soon moved to NPV and capital budgeting concepts.

We were given a statement where a company had a very high NPV and were asked to share our views.

After that, the discussion moved to our work experience and the technical tools we had used in our roles.

Just before closing, the panel asked me why I wanted to do an MBA and why specifically from SPJIMR.

Surprisingly, I was the only one among the five of us who was asked this question, so I made sure I answered it well.

Fortunately, I cleared this round and progressed to the next interview rounds! 💯

Since CAT is over, I’m sharing the GDPI preparation resources that I used during my own preparation phase! 📌📌

GDPI is not about fancy answers or scripted responses; it’s about how clearly you think and how honestly you present yourself.

I made mistakes during my prep, wasted time on irrelevant things, and slowly figured out what actually adds value in interviews.

These resources helped me structure my thoughts, prepare my story better, and walk into interviews with a little more confidence.

A man recently took his parents on their first-ever flight! 🫶

Someone called it one of the biggest achievements of his life and honestly, it was.

They gave up choices and sometimes dreams, just so ours could come true.

And we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget our parents, probably our biggest cheerleaders, also deserve appreciation.

You know what, as we grow older, the meaning of success quietly shifts, and honestly, it feels better that way! <3

Why did I deny the internship opportunity at Bain & Company (BCN)?

During my 2nd year, when I was searching for internships, I got a call from Bain for an internship opportunity.

But I had to deny it because of the following reasons:-

1. 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

The total duration of the internship was 6 months. Since, I was targeting to prepare a diversified resume, devoting 6 months was a tough call for me.

Though it depends from person to person, if you want to prepare a specific resume centered towards a single profile, then you can go for it.

2. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

They were hiring for their talent acquisition team. Since I already had the experience in talent acquisition while working at Paytm, I thought exploring a different profile would be a good choice.

3. 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭

I had an instinctive feeling that a long tenure of 6 months may block the other opportunities that I could get. (Coincidentally it was right, I would have not gotten the opportunities to intern with EY and Urban Company)

It's one of the most important factors that we should consider while going for an internship.

4. 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞

Only 5 more months were left in my 2nd year when I got this opportunity. I was very clear that if I join, I'll be ending it somewhere around the start of the placement season, that implies no more time for exploring other profiles before the placements.

Sometimes you have to take a hard call by trusting yourself and if you are genuine in your efforts, then there's something better waiting for you.
