Friday confession:
I miss my daughter.

She’s off at college, out there living her best life… while I’m at home doing very normal, very sane things like:

• pausing mid-sentence because I 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳 I heard her laugh in the hallway
• scrolling through old photos like I’m an unpaid archivist for The Museum of Our Family
• buying her favorite snacks “just in case she stops by” (she lives 300 miles away, but sure, Viveca)
  
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder.
And yes. Absolutely.

But can we also acknowledge it makes the brain grow…slightly unhinged? (Just me?!)
Because the missing is weirdly specific.

I don’t just miss “my daughter.”
I miss:

• the random drive-by commentary from the other room (“That’s a choice.”)
• the kitchen pop-ins that start with “I’m starving” and end with me losing half my lunch
• the way she can roast me with one sentence and somehow still be adorable doing it
• the noise. The mess. The 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦.
  
Now the house is calmer. Peaceful. Mature.
And honestly…suspicious.

Like…why is it so quiet? Who approved this? Where’s the background sass?

Here’s the part no one tells you:
Missing your kid isn’t only sad.

It’s also kind of hilarious - because you start realizing how much of the joy was in the tiny, ordinary stuff you didn’t think you’d miss.

So yes - my heart is fonder.
But my fridge is also fuller (for no reason).
And my phone storage is at 2% because apparently I’ve decided to become the CEO of “Rewatching My Own Parenting Highlights.”

Thursday night. Good food. Loud restaurant. One friend I hadn’t seen in over a year.
 
You know the kind of dinner where the first 10 minutes are catch-up logistics…
And then suddenly the real question lands.
 
“So,” she said, leaning in,  “what are you actually focused on now, in 2026?”
 
Not 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮.  Not 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳.  Not the tidy version.
 
𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡 𝙤𝙣𝙚.
 
I laughed, because yes, like most humans with a calendar and a pulse, I’ve done a little navel-gazing lately. Looking back. Looking ahead. Trying to name the thing beneath the thing.
 
And here’s what surprised me:
 
The answer wasn’t LinkedIn.
 
LinkedIn is the channel. The vehicle. 🚗 The microphone. 🎤
 
What I actually do is quieter - and bigger.
 
I help people make sense of their story. 
➛ Your unique message. 
➛ Your positioning. 
➛ Your authority.
 
The 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 version finally matching the 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 version everyone already trusts, refers, and wants in the room.
 
My sweet spot?  Digging into what sets you apart when you’ve been too close to see it.
 
The career twists. The lived experience. The judgment calls you’ve made a hundred times that others still struggle with. The thing you assume is “obvious” because it’s 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴.
 
I’ve spent a decade building tools, asking better questions, and having thousands of conversations to surface that.  Then position it - clearly, honestly, and without the cringe.
 
So I told her, simply:
 
“I discover, resurface, and position who you are, what you do, and why you do it.”
 
Because when people have choices - and they always do - they choose professionals they trust and connect with. And, I hope, make them laugh (or at least smile) - another content pillar of mine! 
 
And here’s the part I didn’t expect to say out loud, but felt true as soon as I did:
 
This year, I want more real life. 
More rooms. 
More stages, of any size. 
More conversations that don’t start with a profile view.
 
Still strategy. Still clarity. Still visibility.
 
Just with more eye contact.

My bread and butter is helping B2B content agencies (like Stratton Craig and Publicis Pro) handle (often tricky) accounts. 

I slot smoothly into teams producing good work to tight deadlines. 

Regular/recent work includes monthly technical case studies for a US-based (global) SaaS provider  and campaign assets (including SEO articles, eBooks and infographics) for another US-based cloud comms brand. 

I've also written articles, web copy and advertorials for higher education, web copy and awards entries for legal clients, and quirky website copy for a UK travel and attractions site. 

I sometimes work closely with account managers and internal teams all the way through a project - from content strategy to producing plans/synopses, to conducting client interviews, and drafting/tweaking copy until it's ready for publication.

At other times I slot in at whichever stage agencies need support.

Translating Legalese (and plain dodgy grammar) on statutory notices. Arranging conduct hearings for social workers and social care workers. Making sure they knew their rights and accessed all available support.  

Met two brilliant work besties. And another guy who showed me an escape route.

Taught me how to format docs really clearly. And support people in very difficult circumstances.

Got this job after a video interview in Jamaica. To this day, I'm not quite sure how. 

But the pressure was on as getting my family back to Scotland depended on it. Anyway, someone was looking out for me. As a job, it wasn't my favourite. As a portal home, it was outstanding. 

Investigating complaints against ACC Social Work department and ensuring responses were adequate and provided to statutory timescales. So you can imagine, it was quite a tricky job. 

Another tough job dealing with complex legal procedures and learning lots about social problems up in the chilliest bit of Scotland.

High-pressure and eye-opening decision-making job which required translating labyrinthine immigration laws to real-life circumstances.  

I met some lovely people and this job had the best culture I've ever experienced. From the High Commissioner to security team, local Jamaican staff to diplomats on postings, everyone was refreshingly transparent and generally positive.

We used to finish at 2pm on Fridays and take a dip in the high commissioner's pool. People like Chaka Demus & Pliers played at the social club. Lovely.

I was in Jamaica for bout 3 years-ish overall. Lived in Harbour View and then Kingston city centre. Used to go to the country every weekend and was lucky enough to see every parish. The Blue Mountains are magical. So many beautiful spots and (next to Scots of course) Jamaicans must be the toughest, funniest and most outrageously creative folk on the planet. 

Job itself was: assessing and making decisions on UK entry clearance (visa) applications. Working to tight deadlines with demanding quality control. Post was highest risk worldwide for criminality. Assessing thousands of visas throughout my time at post. 

Specialised in complex Appendix FM family migration visas for spouses/partners, children and adult dependent relatives. 

Worked with UKTI as Business Network Officer for the Caribbean Region. 

Experienced in visit/family visit visas, Tier 2 and Tier 4 visas.

Carried out face-to-face and telephone interviews with applicants/sponsors. 

Carried out investigative work liaising with internal/external agencies. Security cleared to Restricted and Confidential levels. 

Completed Entry Clearance Officer qualification at Home Office in Croydon and further training in New York. Yup, I got a work trip to the Big Apple. On a plane and everything. Hotel had a telly in the bath!

My first shot at paid writing. Scribbled my way from Scotland to a new life in Jamaica. Best gig was for a fancy dress website. Got to write all the landing pages product pages and descriptions for hundreds of categories. Bit like rewriting history in your own words. 

Wrote SEO content and copy for a wide range of businesses in different TOV. Edited other writers too.

Also got stories in Scots/English/Jamaican patois published online and in print round about this time (a few times since too).

Helping students with non-academic tasks outwith the uni. One day, this involved helping a student pick up a massive tandem bicycle at one end of Glasgow and getting it to her home at the other. Two of us and her massive Alsatian. Bike was as long as a car.
