Last week I had 9 Shopify agency owners around a table for a small dinner sponsored by Recurpay Subscriptions | A Marmeto Product.

Honestly, when Sweta Mohanty 💚🔃 reached out to me to put this on, I was hesitant.

"Why would agency owners want to have dinner with each other?", was my initial thought. That said, I decided to see what we could do.

The first person I told about the idea was Nihar Kulkarni. He told me it made a lot of sense and when I told him that it was being put on my Recurpay and Shashwat, he immediately said he was in.

This was a great first conversation and honestly showed the power of relationships (I later learned they're agencies have worked together for many years) 

From there I felt a lot more confidence as I reached out to Mark Perini, Jason Sidana Johnathan Solorzano Leja Kress Mark Perini Ben Lord Ezra Adler George Rodríguez and I was happy they all said yes.

And honestly, the dinner wen't amazing, we were able to put together a great room.

No panels.
No decks.
No one pitching.

Just operators talking.

In my mind I thought everyone was going to be guarded considering they're competitors. In reality, many of these agencies owners already knew each other and hung out regularly. They connect to share workflows, Shopify app recommendations, hiring decisions, how they are using AI and so much more.

They realize, it's not a zero sum game.

I think this is because Shopify is a growing pie. There are so many companies making the move to Shopify that one agency couldn't handle all of the business even if they tried. I’d imagine the vibe feels different in ecosystems that aren’t expanding at the same pace. I think the idea is when the ecosystem is expanding, collaboration feels smarter than guarding secrets. You can even see this through communities like Taylor Page's Shopify Dev Alliance. 

That said, a lot of it comes down to curation.
Small enough to be honest.
Big enough to have real debate.

I truly appreciate Recurpay for backing real operator conversations in the Shopify ecosystem. Without them this dinner wouldn't have been possible and honestly, I learned a ton and can't wait until the next one!
