I've been placing senior executives for 20 years, and I've noticed something that doesn't get talked about enough.

Some of the most successful-looking people are the most miserable.

They’re what workplace consultant Christine Armstrong has identified as ‘Lost Leaders’.

They’re high-earning lawyers, consultants, senior managers. They’re people who have been at their company for decades and have the kind of roles others aspire to.

But when you actually talk to them, they feel stuck.

They spend their days navigating internal politics or managing contradictions between what the company says and what it actually does. 

Not to mention the back-to-back meetings that feel transactional and pointless.

In short: they look powerful, but they don't feel any real power.

As one consultant put it: ‘you're stuck in a film that you didn't choose to be in.’

And here's what makes it worse - they can't easily leave. The golden handcuffs complete with a lifestyle built around that salary makes them fear that they're too senior or too specialised to move.

So they stay. And the organisational knowledge they've built becomes a cage around them, not an asset.

If you're 10 years into your career and thinking ‘this is what success looks like,’ pay attention - and think strategically about where you want to go next. 

Because getting to the top of a ladder you didn't want to climb is its own kind of failure.

The UK needs 217,000 additional skilled tradespeople by the end of 2025 and 1 million more by 2032. 

Right now, 140,000+ construction vacancies sit unfilled, with 55% of firms struggling to find electricians, plumbers, and carpenters.

Skilled trades are desperately short of talent. 

Electricians and plumbers in the UK start above £28,000 and regularly hit £40,000+ when qualified or self-employed.

Nearly a third describe their workplace as isolated or impersonal.

And yet, they’re not quitting. In fact, they’re doing the exact opposite: ‘job hugging’ and staying put - even though they're miserable.

Economic uncertainty, AI concerns, and memories of the pandemic have all left people petrified to move. 

Sure, you can’t control budgets or market conditions, but you can control how you lead:

Remove the stuff that’s frustrating your team most and fix what you can control, whether than be clunky approval processes, too many meetings, or shifting priorities.

Stop being the bottleneck! If every decision needs your approval, nothing gets done - so give people clear authority over their work.

Create actual connection, not mandatory team-building. We’re talking regular one-on-ones that go beyond status updates, and dedicated time for your team to actually know each other.

None of this requires budget approval or HR sign-off. You can literally start tomorrow.

Because a team full of people ‘job hugging’ is a slow-motion problem you're choosing to ignore.

Ask yourself: what's the one thing you could change this week to make your team's work less miserable?

A real estate sales team started calling clients with one goal: to get rejected.

That quarter turned out to be the best in their company history.

Sounds backwards, doesn't it?

But they figured out that fear of rejection was costing them more than actual rejection ever could.

‘Rejection therapy’ has been blowing up on TikTok recently, but the workplace applications are a case of their own. 

Most people avoid situations where they might hear no, so they don't ask for the raise or pitch the big idea.The fear of rejection stops them before they even try.

But after 20 years in search, I can tell you: the best candidates are often the ones most comfortable with rejection.

They apply for roles they're not quite ready for and reach out to people they don't know. They ask for opportunities others wouldn't dare request.

And sure, they hear ‘no’ more often. But every so often, that single ‘yes’ is enough to transform their career for the better. 

If you're not getting rejected regularly, you might not be pushing hard enough…

The half-life of a technical skill is now just 2-3 years! I see a lot of leaders discussing the "future of work" as a distant concept.

They're missing the point. 
It's not a 2030 problem. It's a now problem.

The workplace our children will enter is unrecognisable. But the workplace you're leading today will be unrecognisable in 18 months.

While governments and academics debate long term skills, boards and CEOs must act now. 

The conversations with clients right now focus on a critical shift:

Stop hiring based on static skills. 
Start hiring for learning agility.

The finance leader you hired for their deep ERP knowledge will be obsolete unless they can master AI driven forecasting tools. 

The marketing chief who mastered social media will be left behind if they can't lead a team in a "post-search" (generative AI) world.

Your talent strategy must pivot from "acquiring" skills to "building" a culture that can acquire skills repeatedly, at speed.

The most valuable asset on your team is no longer the person who has the answer. It's the person who can find the new answer, fast.

Career advice.


I believe the most damaging habit in leadership isn't a lack of vision, it's a lack of courage to say "no."

Overpromising is the easiest way to underdeliver. Underdelivering is the fastest way to lose trust.

The best leaders I know aren't the ones who promise the moon. 

They're the ones whose "yes" actually means something.

Your team's trust is your most valuable asset. 
Stop eroding it for the sake of a short-term "yes".
