9 years ago I moved to New York City with no connections, no network, and no idea what I was doing.

Everyone told me it was too expensive. 
Too competitive. Too risky.

They were right about all three.

And I’d do it again every single time.

Because this city didn’t just teach me how to sell. 

It taught me how to think bigger.

When you’re surrounded by people building companies, closing eight-figure deals, and operating at a level you didn’t know existed — something shifts.

The ceiling you thought you had disappears.

I remember my first year here. I was coming from Pepsi, making decent money, thinking I had it figured out. Then I sat across from people at dinners who were earning in a month what I made in a year.

That could’ve been intimidating. For a while, it was.

But then it became fuel.

I stopped thinking “that’s not for me” and started asking “how did they do that?”

NYC crushed my limiting beliefs one by one:

“People like me don’t invest in commercial real estate.” I watched people with the same background do exactly that.

“I need to wait until I have more money.” I met people who started with less than I had.

“I should just be grateful for my W2.” I realized my W2 was a launchpad, not a destination.

The drive here is contagious. Everyone is chasing something. Not in a toxic way — in a way that makes you realize you’re allowed to want more.

More income. More freedom. More options.

This city is expensive. The rent is absurd. The taxes are brutal. The pace will burn you out if you let it.

But the cost of staying comfortable somewhere else would’ve been higher.

Because comfort doesn’t force you to grow. And growth is what got me from that first $88K rental property to running Seven Peak Capital 

When I look back at the last decade — the trajectory, the relationships, the deals, the lessons — almost all of it traces back to one decision:

Putting myself in a room I wasn’t ready for and refusing to leave.

I took this photo from a helicopter over Manhattan a few years ago. 9 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined seeing the city from this angle — literally or figuratively.

If you’re early in your career and debating whether to bet on yourself — bet on the environment.

Put yourself around people who make your current goals look small.

The rest will follow.

My grandma is 95 years old. Last week she held her great-grandson for the first time.

Four generations on a porch in Florida. 

No agenda. No rush. Just time.

I’ve been fortunate to have a close relationship with her for all 35 years of my life. 

I don’t take it for granted.

And watching her hold Beckham — seeing her face light up meeting the newest member of our family — that’s a moment I’ll carry with me.

Every time I visit, I ask her the same question: what’s kept you going this long?

Every time, same answer. Positivity.

Not the bumper sticker kind. Not pretending life is easy.

The kind where you wake up every morning and decide — I’m going to see what’s working, not what’s broken.

95 years. Wars. Recessions. Loss. 

And she still chooses to see the glass half full.

That’s not naivety. That’s a superpower.

In a world that gives you plenty of reasons to be cynical, choosing positivity is one of the hardest and most important things you can do.

Believe in yourself. Choose the better lens.

The rest tends to follow.

When I bought my first property in 2016, I didn’t have a team.

I didn’t have a mentor or a real estate network.

I had my dad.

He had contractor skills and weekends. That was our whole operation.

I’d work my sales job during the week. 

Then after work and on the weekends, we’d drive to the property and work on it together.

Ripped out floors. Fixed plumbing. Taught me things I never learned in any sales training.

That property wasn’t just my first investment.

It was time with my dad I’ll never forget.

He didn’t know real estate.

But he showed me you don’t need to know everything. You just need to show up and figure it out.

I think about that a lot now that I’m a dad.

What am I showing my son about how you build something?

The same thing my dad showed me.

You start. You get your hands dirty. And you don’t wait until you have it all figured out.

59,000 runners. 2 million spectators. 5 boroughs of nonstop energy.

I ran my first NYC Marathon last year.

My goal was sub-4 hours. Official time: 4:06:20.

Missed it by six minutes. Strava had me at 3:58 through 26.2 so honestly I’m counting both.

But the time wasn’t the lesson.

You can’t shortcut 26.2 miles. You can’t skip the early morning runs and expect to show up on race day ready.

Every training mile compounded into that one moment crossing the finish in Central Park.

That’s exactly how building wealth works.

I bought my first rental in 2016 with savings from my W2 and help from my dad.

Nothing glamorous. A single-family house I had to rehab myself.

Nine years later that one decision has compounded into a portfolio, a fund, and a month in March 2023 where my passive income officially crossed my fixed monthly expenses.

None of it was fast. None of it was flashy.

But just like that marathon — the only reason I got to the finish line is because I kept showing up on the days I didn’t feel like it.

What are you grinding through right now that feels painfully slow?

My six-week-old son is already an investor.

He has $3,000 invested.

Last week we got his Social Security number.

Within days, we opened and funded his 529.

Not because college is guaranteed.

But because optionality is.

He can’t sit up yet.
He can’t say a word.

And that matters.

We’ll continue to fund his 529 every month.

But more importantly, I’ll teach him what school won’t.

Because once your life is covered by assets, your paycheck changes roles.

14 years in enterprise tech sales.
