"Why would I pay you when ChatGPT can do this for free?" 

The CEO of a fintech company said smugly, as he slid his laptop across to me.

He'd asked ChatGPT to create a market entry strategy.

It looked impressive. Detailed market analysis. Clear branding recommendations. Professional formatting.

My mouth went dry. Maybe he's right. Maybe I'm becoming obsolete.

Then I asked him one question:

"If this strategy fails and costs you ₹5 crores, who takes responsibility?"

Silence.

"ChatGPT won't return your calls. It won't fix the mess. It won't lose sleep over your company."

He closed the laptop. "Fair point."

Here's what I realized that day:

AI can create stunning strategies - on paper.

But it can't sit across from you when things go wrong.

It can't read the room when your board is panicking.

It can't tell you the hard truth you need to hear.

My client called me at 9 PM on a Thursday evening. I was helping my younger son with his homework.

"I need your help. My board presentation is in 48 hours and it's a mess."

"Send it over tonight, and I'll take a look" was my response.

He said. "Can we work on it now?"

I took a breath.

"Rajeev, send it over. I'll study it properly tonight and we'll fix it on a call tomorrow morning. One focused hour will do more than three rushed ones right now."

Silence.

He wasn't used to this. Most vendors would've said yes immediately.

"Okay," he said finally. "9 AM?"

"9 AM."

I went back to helping my son with his homework.

The next morning, one hour, deck completely turned around.

Walking out of that boardroom he sent me a message.
"I've never had a consultant who pushed back on me and still delivered."

That pushback wasn't arrogance.

It was 25 years of knowing that good work needs the right conditions, not just good intentions.

That's what corporate experience actually gives you.

The confidence to know what works. And the calm to say it out loud.

She was the marketing director at a SaaS startup in Gurgaon, and I was a new independent consultant at 45.

I nodded confidently.

She slid it back across the table. "You're undercharging yourself."

I'd quoted ₹80,000 for a three-month strategy engagement.

I drove back home to Noida that evening confused.

I had 22 years of experience behind me. Led teams. Managed ad budgets worth tens of crores.

Most people look at their career from the myopic view of their next employment, thinking that they are building a career.

The truth becomes glaring when 10+ years have gone by and you don’t understand or know where it went and you are staring at a resume of you doing jobs where you have compromised one way or the other but never really built a career.

Lets understand the difference between a career and a job

A job is-

- a sprint of a few years
- may or may not be structured and intentional
- may not align with your long term
Life goals
- can simply be something you do for money (cash project)
- doesn’t really involve any long term thinking about where it is taking you
- is something you may take up because of external influences (money, what friends are doing, how economy is changing, fear of failure )

A career is-

- a marathon of 30 years 
- is structured, intentional and compounds over time
- aligns with your life goals
- combines both your passion and financial growth
- is something you built purely through inner calling, understanding yourself and building a life for yourself 
- is built from confidence and awareness

Most people start working at 21 and take their first job they get:

-  because of Fear of missing out when they look at their friends, peers

- the unhealed trauma wound that gives the need to prove themselves and be in consistent invisible competition 

- having to make money due to rising bills

- to simply explore and find themselves 

All the reasons are valid and practical enough to do your first job for a few years.

The problem happens when you forget that  your first job is supposed to give you the time, space and finances to actually build a career that aligns with your strengths, interests and lifestyle goals over time.

You start to confuse your first job/ project/ business as your career foundation.

Most people suffer from sunk cost fallacy here.

(The sunk cost fallacy is the irrational tendency to continue an endeavor (like a failing project or bad investment) simply because of previously invested time, money, or effort that cannot be recovered)

A lot of folks think that just because they did a certain degree and are now in a job that pays enough to keep their fears at bay- life has to be this way only.

Result after a few years?

- losing all interest in the work you are doing over time manifesting as procrastination 

- performance at work silently going down that creates added pressure 

- unable to compete in a market that demands growing excellence 

- dissatisfaction from career spilling onto health, personal relationships- leading to coping mechanisms 

- regret of not building the confidence to choose yourself sooner

The only solution to this career problem is to BUILD A CAREER and not confuse a job you chose as your career

1) Understanding what your passion, interests and strengths are as an individual and scanning what career field combines most of them

“I made a huge mistake mom, I can’t study this”

Thats what I told my mother at 16 when I took science in peer pressure instead of humanities to study psychology.

Ended up studying humanities and joined the school 2 months late

“I fucked up mom and dad, I don’t want to go for my masters in Human Resources”

Thats what I told my parents at 22 after working for my masters application for 2+ years, getting an admit in one of the world’s top 10 universities and having already paid 1.5 lakhs as the initial fee deposit.

I ended up then taking multiple certifications in coaching and started my life coaching business from scratch.

These are just 2 instances but over and over again- I have made choices, realised they weren’t right and changed lanes.

And every time I used to do that, people around me thought I had gone crazy.

I appeared very “unsettled” to a lot of people throughout my teenage and early 20s.

Funnily now- these are the same people who tell me now that they wish they had the courage to pivot in their career back then and now it feels like its too late.

And even today- I tell them the same thing I have done all my life and still do- be willing to accept that you don’t like something and build another path.

If 2 years down the line I don’t like coaching, I swear to god- I would just quit with absolutely ZERO regrets.

If 5 years down the line I want to go become a professor somewhere, I will go and get a degree again.

I feel truly and completely free in my career choices because I dont derive my self worth from it.

I have zero pride, shame or anything attached to what I am doing and it has given me the wings I needed to fly wherever I want and whenever I like.

But these wings weren’t given to me, they were developed with consistent inner work around detaching my identity and worth from my career.

The more inner work I have done, the more freedom and courage I have acquired to live life on my own terms.

And call it funny or ironic, the less I have wanted people’s praise of any kind, the more I have actually gotten.

The less I have cared about what others think of my career choices, the more I have found people praising my choices.

I work because I genuinely want to, not because I have to prove something to someone.

I make money because I like being independent not because I believe I am not worth anything if I dont make it.

Over time as I have spoken to more and more people around what keeps them stuck in their career, the answer has always been the same-

- their lack of inner work

Lack of inner work manifests as fear of failure, lack of self worth, cynicism, loyalty to struggle, poor relationship with money, etc.

Not once have I ever met someone whose inner world was evolved and yet they were stuck.

My greatest learning in my professional life has been that the more I believe in myself, the more I choose myself- everything will come to me.

The answer has always been, always is and always will be- inner work.
