Working for AGA Natural Gas under Linde Group means constant development of knowledge in the gas industry as well as communicating daily in 4+ languages with our partners and colleagues who are based in Germany, the Uk, and Region North Europe.

The eCommerce team was a new project and opened AGA's three first online shops at the beginning of 2018. We were working on getting ready for the launch of an app that allows our customers to purchase their gas on the go.
Our main goal was to convert existing email/phone order customers into online order customers.
My main activities were to manage online product catalogs for each country, managing the content and keeping the SEO up to date. I also supported the work of digital marketing.

Why high achievers burn out first.

High performers have a superpower: they can push through anything.

But that superpower has a cost.

Here's the pattern:

Stage 1: You optimize everything.
More systems. Better routines. Smarter workflows.

Stage 2: You hit a wall.
No amount of optimization fixes fatigue that comes from depletion, not inefficiency.

Stage 3: You push harder.
If optimization didn't work, maybe more discipline will.

Stage 4: You break.
Your body forces the stop your mind won't allow.

The trap: high achievers mistake burnout for a productivity problem.

It's not.

Burnout is what happens when you extract more energy than you deposit.

You can't optimize your way out of a math problem.

🧠 Advice from me, who paid a high price for this lesson:

1. Stop treating rest as an unreachable luxury. Rest is recovery. Recovery is productive.

2. Track your energy like you track your metrics. When does it rise? When does it crash? What depletes you fastest?

3. Build recovery into your week like you build meetings. Non-negotiable. And enjoy your walks, breathing exercises, music, and socializing!

4. Prioritize meaningful connection. Your conference-based network won't be there to catch you when you fall. Real friends will. People who see you, not your title. Your laughter, vulnerability, and presence.

Isolation amplifies burnout. Connection heals it.

5. Measure success differently. Not by what you produced, but by how much energy you have left.

The most powerful thing a high achiever can do isn't work harder.

I'm back.

Seven months of severe burnout made me lose everything. My home. My savings. My ability to perform.

My business was growing. But the past year had been brutal. And living in a new country. Two daughters. No one to catch me if I fell.

What 'Mental Vacation' Actually Means

It's not a retreat. It's not a day off.

It's the ability to step away from crisis mode and into clarity.

To feel your own thoughts again. To remember what matters.
That's a mental vacation.

And most executives haven't had one in years.

"I just wish to have someone to talk to."

This is one of the major wishes of a severely burned-out person.

Someone to talk to: 

- someone who is ready to take time to listen actively
- someone who follows up daily
- someone who has experienced the same trauma, or
- someone who has taken the time to research severe burnout symptoms
- someone who doesn't come with unsolicited advice (that tends to be so off track and undoable for a burnout, that it works as a major trigger)

Basically, someone who puts effort into understanding and supporting.

A severely burned-out person is not capable of teaching how to be supportive. 

Actually, they tend to isolate themselves after several failed attempts to connect with people, causing their symptoms to get even worse. 

So look around, and reach out to people in your network and be there for them. They will remember your kindness long after that.

Panic attacks are incredibly common in severe burnout.

Most people try to think their way out.

Please don't.

An easy way to stop them is to simply:

Remove the trigger
Protect your nervous system
Give it time to recover
Repeat until it works

That's it.

So many people forget this simple thing.
They try breathing exercises.
They journal.
They meditate.

Then they go right back to the trigger and wonder why the attacks return.

But your nervous system doesn't need techniques.
It needs safety.

One email. One Slack ping. One news alert.

And you're back on the floor.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I had to remove my phone, close my laptop, and stop consuming news. Not because I'm weak or avoiding reality.

But because my nervous system needed to hear it multiple times, you're safe now.

Some people need days of this.
Some need weeks.

And that's okay.

Your job isn't to outthink panic.

It's to consistently remove what triggers it until your body believes you're safe again.

This was my mental vacation spot in Sweden.

You could meet me here every morning around 6-7 am last Summer, and this place played the key role in my acute burnout recovery.

The ducks, geese, moorhens and the rabbits running around it helped, too. 🐇 

To heal from burnout's cognitive and emotional load, one needs daily dopamine and serotonin doses. In other words - as many blissful and happy moments as possible.

Burned out people have extremely high level of stress and anxiety hormones, and their out-balancing is critical for recovery.

How to speed up burnout recovery?

There is no medicine for it. 

Beside other approaches, find your happy place, go to esthetically beautiful environments, have chats with calm people who stand by you, and go for daily walks, matched with breathing exercises.

Can burnout cause brain damage?

I asked myself this after another panic attack during one of my walks in the park. I was in acute burnout and terrified.

My brain felt like porridge.

So I did some research.

It doesn't cause permanent brain damage. Our brains are flexible.

But it can lower your IQ temporarily. 🤯 

And if burnout stays untreated, other problems appear.

Book review

"The Trauma of Burnout" is by far the best book about burnout I have read so far.

And I have read many.

It is written by Dr. Claire Plumbly, and is pretty scientific, explaining well what is going on with the body and mind of a burned-out person. 

She describes the symptoms and the reason behind them well, and gives advice for healing. 

When matched with guidance from a person who understands you well and helps you through the trauma, it is a very useful resource.
