Step 1. Ground yourself in intent.

You do not have to challenge people aggressively. A simple line works wonders. “May I offer another perspective?” or “Can I build on that idea?” It keeps the conversation open instead of defensive.

At 40, I don’t want an easy life.

Most people aren’t afraid of being alone.

They’re afraid of being still.

Because stillness removes the noise.

No meetings.
No notifications.
No performance.

Just you and your thoughts.

And that’s uncomfortable.

So we stay “productive.”

Back-to-back calls.
Constant Slack pings.
Scrolling between tasks.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

If you can’t sit with yourself,
you’ll struggle to lead others.

Because leadership requires:

• Emotional regulation
• Clarity under pressure
• Independent thinking
• Decisions that aren’t crowd-approved

Solitude builds those.

Not isolation.
Not withdrawal.

Intentional time alone.

When I started protecting small pockets of silence:

This was a highly dynamic role that continuously evolved with fast-changing business priorities, encompassing the remit of Talent & Performance Management and Capability Building. The greatest strength that this role had helped me develop is the ability to constantly don varied/ multiple hats and stay agile while maintaining a relentless focus on upskilling, retaining and engaging the Talent at OLX. In ~2 years, some of the key initiatives that I led/ worked on are:

1. Part of the team that launched one of the very first AI-enabled People Manager Coach, PlusOne, enabling people managers to receive coaching anytime, anywhere
 
2. Talent Partner for People Manager Capability & Leadership Development initiatives for Global Product, Data and Tech teams.

3. Designed and launched an award-winning mentoring program. As part of this, we facilitate the best mentor-mentee matches via an AI algorithm that takes into account participants’ skills, and career aspirations. The program has a satisfaction score of 4.7 out of 5, while the global benchmark is 4.5

4. Strategised & led the LXP roll-out, MyAcademy 2.0 (powered by Degreed) for OLX group in partnership with Naspers-Prosus encompassing content, communications & user experience

5. Led the design and launch of Career Path tool, called Catalyst - an online & exceptionally engaging tool that hosts Career/ Competency Frameworks. 

6. Partnered with Product, Data and Tech leadership to define the Talent strategy for FY23 and launched several initiatives as part of this, across skill building, role-based programs, cross-culture intelligence building, current/future skills development - increasing learner adoption by 35%

7. Led the Global Performance Management Process for FY23 including Training/ Learning, Content Development, Process Management & Frameworks build, in partnership with Rewards, People tech & HR BPs

8. Partnered with the HR BPs for the Talent Conclave to drive talent conversations

Senior Manager - People Manager Capability & Leadership Development

Paytm is the company that taught me the true meaning of hustle. I worked with some amazing industry leaders & excellent team members, and I learnt a great deal in the process! 

I consider myself truly fortunate for having the opportunity of working with Paytm during ‘Demonetisation’ & playing a small part in the big digital payments revolution that the company brought in to the country! 

During my tenure with Paytm, I got the opportunity to deliver multiple assignments across a bunch of roles:

End-to-end learning & development  for Marketplace, Digital (Wallet), Travel & Social Media CST verticals. 

Owner of customer communications across channels and platforms.

Set up a team of 18+ training managers from the scratch over a period of 2 years. Responsible for leading & mentoring a team of 18 training managers along with overseeing the training functions of 12+ partners that were managing our operations. Some of my key responsibilities were:

1. Setting up an assessment methodology to ensure that we hire the right fit and skill for Paytm processes

2. Setting up an effective New Hire Induction Process that resulted in 90% + throughput & job-ready trainees

3. Owning & building on the customer communications across channels and mediums for consistent, accurate & compliant responses resulting in resolution & customer satisfaction

5. Leading the Functional & Business Skills Portfolios across internal teams and partner teams 

6. Being the custodian of Content, Decision Trees, SOPs & Templated Responses and keeping these updated within 8-10 hours of a policy, product change/ enhancement

Manager - Trainings & Communications

American Express

Central training & communications lead for system migrations, new product/ technology launches and campaign management system/ processes for 23 international markets & 5 business units across JAPA, EMEA & LACC regions (markets). 

As part of my role, I was responsible for:

1. Partnering with AET (Technology), Marketing, Compliance teams to define training requirements, and map it to various roles existing within the organisation

2. Developing custom training and learning solutions for marketing teams and campaign managers globally that in-turn helped them to strategise, plan & execute marketing campaigns across International markets resulting in incremental spend & customer acquisition

3. Leading the SIT & UAT phases for all system (enhancement) launches & create training & learning collateral

4. Leading the learning content creation & development for AmEx Global Academy for all international regions (process and system related)

5. Initiated and maintained a Global Newsletter promoting Marketing/ Campaign Design best practices across 23 countries. Developed and maintained a Knowledge Management Portal to archive, version control & maintain a central repository of all individual and global Knowledge and information - accessible by one and all.

I began my journey as a Science student, driven by curiosity and a love for learning. After earning my MBA in Marketing, I made an unconventional choice: I decided to build a career in Human Resources. Why HR? Because I believe in finding purpose in everything I do - in work that sparks joy and aligns not only with my own values but also with the goals and dreams of those I work with.

For the last 14 years, I have dedicated myself to this philosophy. Each day, I’ve worked to create meaningful experiences at workplace.  This belief has also led me to make bold choices from making career pivots to welcoming new roles and assignments across organisations and industries. Working with multiple companies across sectors helped me build perspective & valuable experiences: leading transformative projects, from large-scale system migrations, culture transformation and competency frameworks to OD interventions and DEI projects across the globe. During this time, I also had the opportunity to build and lead teams from scratch and work alongside brilliant leaders who have shaped my own leadership style.

My career has taken me across JAPA, EMEA, and LACC regions, where I’ve worked with both established and fast-paced organizations. I’ve built cross-functional teams that delivered award-winning mentoring and coaching programs & helped employees realise their career goals. I’ve also developed skills’ strategies and leveraged AI for learning and capability ahead of other industry players. I am passionate about Leadership & Capability development, Talent management, Performance enablement, Learning insights & Analytics, Culture building & OD and DEI. Experience has taught me that talent isn’t defined by labels, or positions but by intent and purpose. A slightly unpopular thought ahead of International Women’s Day.

I have never fully liked the idea of celebrating Women’s Day. And yet, whenever organisations I worked with celebrated it, I participated with full rigour - organising sessions, inviting women speakers, and encouraging colleagues to share their journeys and dazzle. I genuinely enjoy listening to women leaders speak; those conversations are often inspiring. But something about having a dedicated day to celebrate women has always felt slightly uncomfortable to me.

My logical brain has often challenged this discomfort. After all, organisations run Digital Weeks to drive adoption of tools, or Growth Months to encourage employees to think about their careers. Those nudges work. But what unsettles me is this: women in the workforce are not new anymore. Women have time and again proven their mettle. Across industries. Across roles. Across decades. Is it time we stopped treating them as a ‘special category’ that needs a day of celebration?

And then the counter-question emerges: if we stop celebrating Women’s Day, would we also stop position marking, diversity targets, and representation goals? I have not fully made up my mind yet. But I do know that real progress probably lies less in celebration and more in systems: questions in interviews like how many women leaders did you nurture?, expectations in performance reviews around team diversity; and more women at decision-making tables and boardrooms.

Because a dedicated day can sometimes give us the comforting feeling that we have done something, when the real work of building equitable workplaces is far from done.

The emotions we suppress at work don’t disappear. They accumulate. 

For decades, professional culture has quietly reinforced a familiar idea: leave your emotions at the door. The intention is understandable encouraging composure, objectivity, and professionalism. But the assumption underneath it is flawed. Emotions are not something we can simply switch off. In fact, the word emotion comes from the Latin  word, ‘emovere’, meaning to move or to release. Emotions are signals that carry information about what matters to us, what feels unfair, what energises us, or what drains us. Research in organisational psychology shows that suppressing emotions increases stress, reduces cognitive performance, and contributes to burnout. Yet many workplaces still operate as if professionalism requires emotional silence.

In reality, emotions don’t disappear when they’re suppressed; they simply go underground. Over time, unprocessed frustration becomes disengagement. Concerns that are never voiced early resurface later as politics or conflict. Chronic pressure quietly shows up in the body as fatigue, inflammation, and burnout. In large organisations, it’s common to see teams where everyone appears “professional” on the surface while unresolved tensions quietly accumulate beneath it. Ironically, the most effective teams are rarely the ones without emotion; they are the ones where people have healthier ways to process it.

So what does better emotional management at work actually look like? First, leaders need to acknowledge that emotions are part of human decision-making, not a disruption to it. Second, teams benefit from structured spaces for honest conversation: retrospectives, check-ins, and forums where concerns can be raised early rather than buried. And finally, individuals need to build the skill of emotional regulation rather than suppression: recognising what they are feeling, understanding the signal it carries, and choosing a constructive response. Emotional intelligence is not about being calm all the time. It is about ensuring that emotions move through the system productively rather than silently accumulating beneath it.

5 timeless Japanese philosophies for modern leadership 

March already. The year is no longer starting; it’s moving.

The first two months are usually about intention-setting; March is about momentum.

As work accelerates and personal goals compete for attention, I have been revisiting a few Japanese philosophies that feel surprisingly practical…not poetic, not abstract but deeply actionable for modern life.

Here are five that might help as the year picks up pace:

1. Wabi-Sabi (侘寂)
The acceptance of imperfection.Not every presentation will be flawless. Not every week will be optimal. 
Progress > polish. 

2. Kaizen (改善)
Continuous small improvements.
Not dramatic reinventions. Not burnout sprints.
Just 1% better systems, habits, communication, daily.

3. Ikigai (生き甲斐)
Your reason for being. Where what you are good at, what you love, what the world needs, and what you’re paid for intersect. Clarity reduces anxiety.

4. Shoshin (初心)
Beginner’s mind. Stay curious even as a leader. Especially as a leader. Expertise without curiosity becomes rigidity.

5. Tsundoku (積ん読)
The art of acquiring books and letting them wait. A gentle reminder: intellectual growth is not a race. You don’t have to consume everything immediately. Depth > speed.

As March unfolds, maybe the goal isn’t to push harder. Maybe it’s to move wiser.

Five timeless Japanese Philosophies for Moden times 

Winning matters.

We don’t say that often enough.

Somewhere along the way, we started glorifying the idea that winning isn’t the goal, that participation matters, that the journey is everything. And in many ways that is true. Effort, discipline, learning and persistence are the real game.

But the idea of winning still serves an important purpose. The dream of winning raises the bar for what we attempt in the first place. An athlete trains differently when the goal is the podium. An entrepreneur builds differently when the ambition is to create something enduring. A painter works differently when striving for mastery rather than just completion.

When we aim higher - much higher - something interesting happens. Even if we don’t land exactly where we first imagined, we often end up far ahead of where we would have been had we aimed modestly. The aspiration itself expands what becomes possible.

And when the win finally arrives, after months or years of effort, the thrill is unmistakable. Not because someone else lost, but because the invisible work, the discipline and the persistence finally become visible.

Celebrate the journey, absolutely. But when the win comes, pause and acknowledge it.

Because sometimes the thrill of winning is simply the fruit of long, patient labour and the proof that aiming high was worth it.

And perhaps that’s why dreaming of the win still matters.

If you have ever taken work personally, it probably means you care deeply about what you do. 

As the article points out:
"Taking things personally at work is not a sign of weakness, but a reflection of your passion, commitment, and deep sense of responsibility." 

But, how do you decouple your sense of self from work? 

One technique is to introduce a bit of humour or perspective when others act out. Melody Wilding, LMSW recommends picturing the other person as a scared child or imagining their harsh comments in a silly voice. It diffuses their power and help create distance. 

I have been trying this too. In my head, the difficult person sometimes becomes 'Voldemort'. No points for guessing that I am a Potterhead. :D 

Interesting how small mental shifts can change how we experience difficult moments at work.

The real workplace crisis is not burnout. It is cognitive erosion.

We are talking about burnout. We are talking about overload. We are talking about productivity. But we are missing the deeper issue. We are eroding our collective ability to think, not because people lack capability, but because the system is structurally hostile to depth. Research shows the average knowledge worker switches tasks roughly every 3 minutes. After an interruption, it can take 20+ minutes to regain deep focus. And according to Microsoft’s Work Trend Index, most professionals spend 60 to 80 percent of their time in meetings, email, or chat (Gloria Mark, UC Irvine; Microsoft Work Trend Index). And yet we expect strategy. Innovation. Foresight. You cannot produce depth in an environment optimized for interruption.

Here is the uncomfortable truth. Modern work cultures reward responsiveness over reasoning. Fast replies look efficient. Busy calendars look important. Instant availability signals commitment. But none of these build judgment. Thinking requires silence. It requires cognitive runway. It requires the space to connect patterns that are not immediately obvious. Without that space, thinking becomes reactive. Reactive thinking feels fast. But it is rarely strategic.

A few years ago, in one of my previous organizations, we implemented a ‘No-Meeting Day’. We were a globally distributed team across time zones. On paper, it was elegant. In practice, it was complicated. What was protected time in one geography was peak collaboration time in another. Urgent cross functional calls still slipped in. Calendars did not magically clear. But even partial protection changed behavior. Pre reads improved. Written communication became sharper. Escalations reduced. Decisions felt more considered. The lesson was not that the idea failed. The lesson was that thinking cannot survive on good intentions alone. It requires structural design.

Now layer AI into this reality. AI can draft. AI can summarize. AI can analyze faster than most humans. But it cannot own contextual judgment. It cannot carry ethical responsibility yet. It cannot understand the political nuance inside an organization. If we lose the muscle of thinking, AI will not augment us. It will replace the parts we stopped exercising. Thinking is not a soft skill. It is infrastructure.

And if organizations do not redesign work to protect it, they will not have a burnout problem. They will have a judgment problem. In the next decade, competitive advantage will not belong to the fastest organizations. It will belong to the ones that still know how to think.
