Step 1. Ground yourself in intent.
Before speaking, ask yourself a simple question. Am I trying to prove myself right or am I trying to help the team think better? When your intent is contribution, your tone changes.

You do not have to challenge people aggressively. A simple line works wonders. “May I offer another perspective?” or “Can I build on that idea?” It keeps the conversation open instead of defensive.

Step 3. Stay curious.
After sharing your thoughts, ask a question. “How are others seeing this?” Curiosity keeps dialogue alive and signals that you are here to think with the room, not win against it.

I turn 41 this year.

At 40, I don’t want an easy life.

Most people aren’t afraid of being alone.

They’re afraid of being still.

Because stillness removes the noise.

No meetings.
No notifications.
No performance.

Just you and your thoughts.

And that’s uncomfortable.

So we stay “productive.”

Back-to-back calls.
Constant Slack pings.
Scrolling between tasks.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth:

If you can’t sit with yourself,
you’ll struggle to lead others.

Because leadership requires:

• Emotional regulation
• Clarity under pressure
• Independent thinking
• Decisions that aren’t crowd-approved

Solitude builds those.

Not isolation.
Not withdrawal.

Intentional time alone.

When I started protecting small pockets of silence:

   - How you process situations, how you make sense of things, how you arrange your thoughts before speaking.

• The other happens in front of people.
   - Your tone, expressions, the way you explain things, how confidently your ideas come across.

Most people try to improve the second part first...better vocabulary, sounding more fluent, speaking more.

But if your thoughts feel tangled, the message will feel tangled too.

When the thinking becomes clearer, the words usually follow.

This might sound funny, but I genuinely think about this a lot.

A potato on its own feels very basic. But put it in the right dish and suddenly it’s the hero.

Same ingredient. Different environment.

I think people work like that too.

I grew up thinking I was just average because nothing around me really pulled something distinct out of me. Later, when I stepped into new spaces, I saw different sides of myself.

Now when students come to me feeling confused or "not good enough," I rarely see a lack of talent.

I see potential that hasn’t been placed correctly.

You don’t always need to change who you are. Sometimes you just need to change where you’re standing.

That’s the thing about first impressions.

They’re rarely about saying something impressive.

And honestly, I made peace with that.

Then during a viva one day, my English teacher looked at me very casually and said, "Merushri, you are so confident."

It caught me off guard. I remember my face getting warm because that word had never been attached to me before.

Confident? Me?

Nothing dramatic happened after that. 

I didn’t suddenly become outspoken. But something shifted quietly. 

I started observing myself differently. I started noticing that maybe I wasn’t average. Maybe I was just never seen in that way before.

Looking back, I think a lot of us don’t lack confidence. We lack recognition.

And sometimes all it takes is one sentence to make you question the story you’ve been telling yourself for years.

For a long time I thought confidence was a personality type.

They think something is wrong with them. 
Most of the time, nothing is wrong. They just haven’t found the space where their skills make sense yet.

And that changes everything.

Can I tell you something I've never really said out loud?

I once bought eggs and milk the night before my first day at a placement in Manchester.

Not because I was hungry, because I was trying to convince myself I belonged there.

I didn't make it to Day 1.

I left. Went back to London.

Told myself I'd gather the courage and try again.
So I went back to Manchester.

And this time it was worse. Panic attacks. Constant crying.
And one phrase on repeat in my head:

"If I don't do this, I'll be a loser."

Here's what nobody tells you about imposter syndrome, it doesn't feel like self-doubt.

It feels like the truth.

I wasn't afraid of failing at the job. I was afraid that everyone could already see what I believed about myself:

That I didn't deserve to be there.

And the worst part?
Some of my friends confirmed it.

When I got the placement, a few of them said..."Nobody expected you to get it."

They didn't know I was the first psychology student that company had ever hired, a company that had only ever taken business graduates.

But I didn't feel proud.
I felt like I had somehow tricked them.

That's imposter syndrome.

Sometimes it looks like leaving Manchester at midnight.
Sometimes it looks like going quiet in a room where you actually have something to say.

What changed for me wasn't a mindset hack.
It was one English teacher who said during a viva..."Merushri, you are so confident."

Six words.
And my whole self-story started to crack open.

I realised I wasn't broken. I was just never placed in a space that reflected me back correctly.
