“Utkarsh, I just don’t think I’m doing enough.” If I were paid a $ for every time I heard this, I would be a billionaire.

We’re all terrible at seeing our own gifts.

We focus on our flaws.
We dismiss our strengths as “just normal.”
We compare our struggles to everyone else’s highlight reels.

A few months ago, one of my coachees, a senior marketing leader, came to me and said:

“Utkarsh, I just don’t think I’m doing enough.”

Over the last 40 years, I have grown.
And that growth has come at a cost.

That's what makes growth so scary.
So painful.
So hard.

I have lost relationships, careers, opportunities, and more.

In pursuit of growth that aligns with who I am.

The new you will cost you the old one.
This is how I pay the price.

No one talks about what you’ll have to let go of to grow.
The habits that kept you safe.
The people who preferred your smaller version.
The identity that gave you comfort.
The validation that made you feel seen.

Growth isn’t about adding more.
It’s about shedding everything that no longer fits.
And in that shedding, you’ll lose applause. You’ll lose belonging. You’ll even lose yourself for a while.

But then…
One day, you’ll wake up lighter. Clearer.
And you’ll realise, you didn’t lose anything.
You just outgrew what was never meant to come along.

So if it feels lonely right now, that’s okay.
You’re not breaking down.
You’re breaking through.

When I had 4,000 people in my LinkedIn community, I dreamed of 10,000. At 10,000, I started imagining 20. Now, at 23,000… 

I’ve realised the number was never the point.

There’s a past version of me, sitting behind a clinic desk, or staring at a blank screen, or doubting if my words mattered, who would be amazed to see what I get to do today.

Not because it’s perfect.
But because I kept showing up even when no one was watching.

I kept writing when the likes were low.
I kept coaching when clients were few.
I kept believing that impact begins long before attention arrives.

And that’s what I remind my coachees, too.
The goal isn’t to only scratch the surface,
it’s to go deeper.
To become someone your past self would be proud of.

If you looked back right now,
you’d probably see the same thing,
a younger you who’s stunned you made it this far.

Don’t rush past that version.
Honour them.
Because they’re the reason you’re here.

And you’re not done yet.
Not by a long shot.

Most professionals give everything to a job that would replace them in a week.

Last weekend, I had the joy of coaching my 11-year-old son’s basketball game. Before tip-off, I told the boys something simple…

 👉 “That’s the basket you’re scoring in.”
They laughed, of course, they knew that.
But in the second half, something happened.

In all the excitement, one of our players sprinted across the court, dodged defenders beautifully, and scored in the wrong basket.

The crowd gasped. 
The kid froze.
He’d done everything right… except one thing.
He’d lost sight of direction.

And that’s when it hit me - we adults do this all the time.
We sprint through life,
chasing goals we didn’t choose,
burning energy in the wrong direction.

Imagine Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating after scoring in his own net.

Or Serena Williams smashing the perfect ace on the wrong side of the court.

Ridiculous, right?
Yet, that’s what so many of us do every day
moving fast, 
going nowhere.

Speed feels good. 
Progress looks good.
But if you’re not clear on where you’re headed,
you’ll end up exhausted, not evolved.

So here’s my reminder:
If you’re moving fast but going nowhere, slow down.
Because in the long game of life,
direction will always matter more than speed.

The world needs more A Players.

Here’s what the research says 👇🏽

Harvard and McKinsey found that the top 20% of people create nearly 80% of results.

They’re not just more talented.
They’re more intentional.

When I watch a Roger Federer, an Usain Bolt, a Serena Williams... I wonder, what is different about them and I think it comes down to their insatiable appetite for growth.

A Players:
 ✅ Own outcomes, not excuses.
 ✅ Seek feedback, not comfort.
 ✅ Compete with their potential, not their peers.
 ✅ Turn pressure into progress.

But here’s the truth most people miss -
Being an A Player is a choice.
Not everyone wants to go there.

But if something inside you whispers, “I was made for more,” then staying in your comfort zone will always feel like betrayal.

Because a few decades from now, 
you’ll meet one of two versions of yourself:

Your default self or your designed self.

✅To Coaching, where I finally found alignment between who I am and what I do.

Every chapter felt like burning down an old version of myself, with family, kids, bills, and responsibilities whispering, “play it safe.”
But something louder inside said, “You were not born to play small.”
Reinvention isn’t about being fearless.

Why Be Ordinary When You Can Have Your Signature?

An engineering manager I worked with once told me,

That was the first community I ever built, more than a decade ago.

Why be ordinary when you can have your signature?

Each of us is born with a unique pattern that no one else has.

If I hadn’t learned this,
I’d still be living someone else’s life.
Still avoiding conflict.
Still mistaking success for validation.

Today, I’ve changed 
not because I figured it all out,
but because I found peace in not knowing.

Have I achieved everything I want to?
No.
Do I have regrets?
None.

Because the moment you start building from who you are,
not what you should be,
life becomes blissfully, beautifully yours.

💬 If you could tell your 25-year-old self one thing, what would it be?

Most people don’t have a technology problem.
They have a self problem.

We keep asking:
 “How do we make AI better?”
 
But rarely ask:
 “How do we make ourselves better so AI can actually help us?”

The story is everything I had to overcome to get here. 

I overcame:

“You’re going to destroy your career!”
 → The 10+ text threads telling me I was insane for posting every day.
 Three years later, those same people got laid off… and came back asking how to grow their LinkedIn and launch their consulting business... 🫠 

“Who does she think she is, posting like that?”
→ Yes, that one came from former coworkers. 
They wanted me to stay silent. 
They wanted me to stay stunted. 
But I’ve learned: envy is just praise in disguise. 
So I exited the room to be able to shout and shine louder.

“Your sister isn’t scared of losing her job? She posts so much.”
 → Those same voices who reached out to my sister to complain, later asked me for advice...

And then there were the mornings when my posts went live while I was still asleep…. and I’d wake up to Andrea Henderson, SPHR, CIR, RACR in my inbox saying:
 “It’s 5am in LA, you’re probably sleeping...  I handled comments from your trolls.”

Wow. Thank you girl. 

That’s understanding.
That’s community.
That’s support.

She knows I’m a single mom of a toddler 
running a business the best way I can.

Some days I need to sleep.
Some days there are typos.
Some days two posts go out at once.
Some days an old post I forgot to delete goes live... 🙃 
Yes, that happens.

 C'est pas facile, mais c'est vrai!

Carve Your Parallel Path, Your Own Portfolio Career

People are always surprised when I tell them that:

When I spoke to 200 business consultants in Montreal about how to promote their company and services, the conversation went like this:

- Me: “Don’t forget to comment. Every day. 20 comments a day.”
- Them: [surprised looks] “Why comment?”
- Me: “Because it’s a social network. You can’t build community if you never engage.” You can’t be anti-social.

I call it the "LinkedIn Generosity Flywheel"
 It's the art of showing up with curiosity, giving value freely, and building community with other humans online.

But here’s the deeper intel:  comments don’t just help you connect, they help you get seen when within your niche.

✔️They expand your reach across similar-minded audiences 
✔️It brings eyeballs to your profile and helps you get discovered
✔️ It’s the kind of visibility that's so important that Linkedin tracks impressions per comment and you can seem them too!

So, next time you think about your LinkedIn strategy, think about your engagement strategy too: when will you comment? 
Within which niche? Which community?

There are 3 types of career pivots. 
Most people only know about one.
Here's why it matters. 👇🏾

In my career, I've made many career moves from:
- Editorial to product
- Product to marketing
- Marketing to sales
- Corporate to entrepreneurship 
- Entrepreneurship to corporate,
and I changed geographies twice.

Career design isn't just about "follow your passion" or "climb the ladder."

There are three distinct ways to redesign your career,
and each one requires a totally different strategy. 

Hear me out, here are the 3 types:

1) The Lateral Shift 
(same level, different function)
- For: People with credibility who need a new challenge
- Advantage: You keep your network, your title relevance 
- Risk: You're not seen as an "expert" in the new space

2) The Climb & Pivot 
(move up while moving sideways)
- For: People building multiple competencies before a bigger move
- Advantage: You gain seniority + proof you can cross domains
- Risk: Takes longer. Requires patience.

3) The Leap 
(leave entirely, rebuild from scratch)
- For: People willing to take a risk for alignment 
- Advantage: Full reinvention. Permission to be new.
- Risk: You lose institutional credibility. You start over.

I've done all three. 

And each one of these requires a whole different operating system!

Most people try strategy #3, when they actually need strategy #1.  
Get this straight. 

Then they burn out, 
start feeling like failures, 
and blame themselves unnecessarily.

The problem isn't them. 
The problem is:
they didn't match the strategy to their actual situation,
instead of matching it to their core aspiration.

Make an Intentional Career Pivot

Career ladders are becoming obsolete.

Portfolio careers are in.

I had a blast speaking at Wonder Women Tech last week in Long Beach
on 'How to future-proof your career in the age of AI'. 

Because the old career maps are no longer going to work.

The most future-ready professionals I have seen aren’t choosing between corporate and entrepreneurial paths anymore.

They’re building portfolio careers that allow them to grow, adapt and evolve.

This way, they can try new things, and thrive without giving up what matters most to them.

History has shown that companies able to endure big historical "shifts" do 3 things very well.

1️⃣ They relentlessly focus on the customer. They build products that offer genuine value and transform behavior for the better.

2️⃣ They develop viable business models.  They go beyond easy "band-aid" solutions.

3️⃣ They're frugal and persist over time. They discipline themselves to navigate uncertainty and limited access to capital.

That's how they face Big Shifts.

But what about us professionals? 
What should we do?

We can do the same. 
We can choose to be more open-minded, more nimble, 
and more flexible.

We can explore what a portfolio career might look like in reality.
Because traditional career ladders often become power games,
with zero-sum pursuits,
and fiefdoms... (Yes, fiefdoms!)

This Big Shift is an opportunity to treat your career like an investment portfolio:

→ Some assets for stability
→ Some for growth
→ Some for passion

And while you're at it, you can leverage AI to build your OWN one-person company. (Just like Sam Altman suggested a few months ago!)

Your next edge won’t come from climbing the ladder alone.

It might come from finding big, deep, unsolved problems that YOU will build for.

In 2012, I was driving AI adoption at Google when AI was still science fiction. We had no roadmap. We built one as we went. That was a career game-changer.

It wasn't flashy,
it wasn't s*xy,
it was effective.
and It made our customers a TON of money.

What it made me realize about myself is that:

There are two types of career moves:

➊ Type 1: Fill the Box (Secure & predictable)
Execute the existing playbook.
 “Here’s the role. Here’s what success looks like.”

➋ Type 2: Build the Box (Terrifying & undefined, but electric)
Invent the path while you walk it.
 “We need something new: go figure it out.”

Reflecting back recently, I realized that in my career I’ve only ever thrived in Type 2. In the terrifying path. 😅 The leap, the reinvention.

2009: Launched Deloitte's GTM strategy with digital and social media.
2012-2022:  Drove Google's AI adoption before anyone believed it was real.
2022-2025: Built things that didn’t exist yet in emerging verticals at LinkedIn.
2006-2008: At Flickr, scaled the commerce photo marketplace globally.
In my personal ventures, I’ve created programs, companies, and frameworks from scratch.

The past 15+ years taught me:

Most people fear Type 2 moves because they think:
 “I need to know how before I start.”

But in Type 2 work, you learn how by starting.
Because reinvention isn’t magic, it's not woowoo 🔮  , it’s a system:

What changed this Black Friday?
Discover the Big Shift from 2024 → 2025

Black Friday 2025 revealed a transformation in how Americans shop. Online sales hit a record $11.8B (+9.1%), but Salesforce shows the rise was driven by higher prices: average selling price up 7%, items per transaction down 2%.

Mobile officially dominated, generating 55.2% of online sales ($6.5B). In-store traffic was mixed, signaling the continued shift toward digital-first shopping.

Top sellers? 
Cosmetics, clothing, luxury accessories, toys, electronics, and appliances. BNPL surged again, driving $747.5M (+8.9%).

The biggest shift:  AI-driven shopping exploded, with referrals from AI tools up 805% YoY.

Cyber Monday is projected to hit $14.2B, and holiday spending is expected to pass $1T for the first time.

The message?  The consumer has changed, and digital, mobile, and AI now lead the way.
