At the age of 16, with 256 Kbps Internet speed, I started my career as a self-taught graphic designer. 

After landing a few projects, I was hungry to keep learning more, and that's how I landed in web development. 

At the age of 18, while still pursuing my education, I launched my first product around WordPress security, which did wonder. It not only paid for my entire education but helped me become financially independent as a teenager.

However, I exited that project and continued with my college and freelance development. 

At the age of 20, I met my first co-founder Oscar Hernandez (He has been my co-founder ever since in everything that we do), known as Power Up Hosting; I ran the company for over 7-years before exiting. 

At 24, I started India's first PBN Hosting platform, which I later exited in 2017. 

My life changed when I launched my third startup, which failed severely and changed my whole life. 

It taught me some of the most valuable life lessons, including management, team hiring, and more. 

The failure of my third startup gave me the idea of PitchGround (My most successful startup to date, currently valued at $20m as of 2022). PitchGround is a SaaS Marketplace that bridges the gap between early-stage SaaS companies and early adopters, small-medium-sized businesses. 

With over 92% of the SaaS companies failing in the first three years of their business, our mission was to resolve this unresolved market worth over $200 billion. 

During this journey, I met my second co-founder Lukas Liesis, building the company's core foundation.

In 2010, Supam Maheshwari – who had just sold his e-learning company for $25 million, became a new father.

He faced a problem millions of Indian parents know: quality baby products were impossible to find.

He'd travel abroad and fill suitcases with diapers and bottles just to avoid the limited options back home. That frustration became FirstCry.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬+ 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀

Supam and co-founder Amitava Saha started with ₹2.5 crore from personal savings. They packed boxes themselves in a Pune warehouse, selling baby products nobody else curated for Indian parents.

Their edge? Bringing international brands like Pampers and Fisher-Price alongside local products.

In 2011, they made a counterintuitive move – opening physical stores in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities through franchises. Why? New parents don't trust buying diapers online without seeing them first.

The hybrid model worked. By 2013, they launched private label BabyHug. By 2015, they partnered with 5,000+ hospitals to give new parents "FirstCry Gift Boxes" – free samples that turned first-time buyers into lifetime customers.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗜𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱

Today, FirstCry generates ₹7,659 crore revenue (FY25) and operates 1,000+ stores – 400 company-owned and 600+ franchises. They offer 2 lakh+ products from 2,000+ brands across India, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

In August 2024, FirstCry went public with a $4 billion valuation after raising $793 million from SoftBank, TPG, and Mahindra. They serve 27 million new parents every year.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻

Watches (9%), EyeCare (2%), Fragrances & Indian Wear (1%) – these are barely visible. Yet Titan built them anyway.

Why? Because they understood something most businesses miss.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲: 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫 + 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐬

Jewelry (₹46,571 crore) is the cash engine. Tanishq, Mia, Zoya, CaratLane – these brands print money at 10.2% EBIT margin.

But Titan doesn't stop there. They launch Taneira for ethnic wear. SKINN for fragrances. IRTH for women's bags. Most are losing money today.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐮𝐬: jewelry customers walk into stores for gold. They leave with a watch, eyeglasses, or perfume. One customer, multiple purchases. Same store, different revenue streams.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧:

1. 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 Titan spent 10 years becoming India's #1 watch brand (1984-1994) before touching jewelry. Another 11 years (1994-2005) before launching Fastrack. They didn't diversify out of weakness – they expanded from strength.

2. 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐢𝐠 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 Fragrances makes only 1% of revenue today. But it uses Titan's 3,322 retail stores built for jewelry and watches. Zero real estate cost. Instant distribution. That's how small bets become profitable – ride on existing infrastructure.

3. 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 Taneira (ethnic wear) loses money. Fragrances loses money. Women's bags lose money. Titan doesn't care. They're building categories that will be ₹1,000+ crore businesses in 5-10 years. Most founders panic at losses and shut down too early.

4. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐝 When Titan launches anything, customers trust it because of Tanishq and Titan Watches. That trust took 40 years to build. Now every new product gets instant credibility. Brand equity compounds over decades.

Today, Titan proves that boring doesn't mean unprofitable. Jewelry, watches, and eyeglasses aren't flashy. But master one category, build trust, then expand slowly into adjacent spaces.

The 85-9-2-1 revenue split isn't a problem. It's the strategy!

In 2009, Sameer Maheshwari (Harvard MBA, ex-UBS) and Prashant Tandon (Stanford MBA, ex-McKinsey) left Wall Street and moved back to India with ₹15 lakh savings.

Everyone called them crazy.

The first 18 months were brutal. They tried software for doctors, practice management for clinics. Nothing worked. Sameer later said, "We were weeks from running out of cash."

In 2011, they launched HealthKart as an online health marketplace. But the real problem was trust. Supplements had a terrible reputation in India. Fake products. Mixed powders. No quality control.

In 2012, they launched MuscleBlaze. The strategy was different. They spent a year visiting customers' homes, watching how people made protein shakes. Most brands imagined customers in premium gyms. Reality? Students in small rooms mixing whey in steel glasses.

They built for real India. Tested every batch on 75 parameters. Put test results on the app. Sent testing kits with first orders so customers could verify purity themselves.

Word spread. Gym trainers recommended MuscleBlaze. Students trusted it. Parents felt safe.

By 2014, their pharmacy app (HealthKart Plus) went viral. But running both pharmacy and nutrition was killing them.

In 2015, they split. Prashant took pharmacy and built 1mg. Sameer kept nutrition and hyperscaled HealthKart.

Today, HealthKart hit ₹1,400 crore revenue in FY25, up 29%. Profit tripled to ₹120 crore. MuscleBlaze owns 30% of India's whey protein market. 100+ stores, 10 million customers.

→ 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀

𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲: In categories with trust issues, build verification systems. HealthKart sent testing kits to customers. That changed everything.

𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀: They spent a year visiting homes, watching customers. Most brands skip this. Winners don't.

𝗦𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆: Running pharmacy and nutrition together killed both. The 2015 split saved both. If businesses need different focus, separate them.

𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Six years without funding forced focus on quality, retention, word-of-mouth. When funding came, they knew what worked.

Today, HealthKart proves you can win in "dirty" categories if you build trust slowly. Sometimes the best moat is being genuinely trustworthy!

The audio market was 'too crowded' to enter. Then Boat found the one thing every competitor missed.

Here's the exact playbook you can steal:

𝟭. 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵.

When Boat started, audio was dominated by giants. But they asked: "What do Indians actually want?" Not what surveys said but what behavior revealed.

𝟮. 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆.

The insight: Indians don't just listen to music. They wear it. It's identity. Fashion. Status.

Premium brands offered quality but killed wallets. Local brands offered prices but looked cheap.

That gap? That's where fortunes hide.

𝟯. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Boat created Skullcandy aesthetics – neon colors, bold designs, statement pieces. But priced them for India, not imported premium.

They didn't compete on sound quality alone. They competed on "How do I look wearing this?"

I've watched dozens of D2C brands hit ₹10 Cr and then stay there for years. The ones that break through to ₹100 Cr don't just do more of the same – they completely change how they run things.

Here's what actually separates them:

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿-𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁.

At ₹10 Cr, the founder approves every ad creative, every influencer deal, every discount. At ₹100 Cr, systems run the business. If you're still the bottleneck for every decision, you've capped your growth at your own time.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗥𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗹𝘆.

₹10 Cr brands have 15-20 products making barely any money because "customers might want options." ₹100 Cr brands cut everything below 5% of revenue. They know 3-5 hero products at scale beat 20 average ones. Your slow-moving inventory is eating your cash.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗢𝘄𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮.

Selling 80% through marketplaces means you're renting customers. ₹100 Cr brands flip this – 60%+ revenue from their own channels (website, app, WhatsApp). They know exactly who buys what, when, and why. You can't improve what you can't see.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀.

₹10 Cr brands chase new customers endlessly. ₹100 Cr brands have subscriptions, refill reminders, loyalty programs that actually work. If 50%+ of your monthly revenue isn't from existing customers, you're running on a treadmill.

The jump from ₹10 Cr to ₹100 Cr isn't about working harder. It's about building different.

Traditional jewelry stores can wait 60 days before changing prices. D2C brands can't afford to wait.
