Three tax planning strategies I learned in my first year on the job, and why they're not as powerful as people think:

1. Defer revenue - for cash-basis taxpayers, don't go to the bank for a few days, and don't check your mail. The idea is that if you don't collect the revenue, it's not taxable.

In theory this is fine. It gets you a one-year deferral, so it's really only a time-value of money play. Assuming you can get a 20% return on the tax savings, deferring the tax might be worth up to 10% of the revenue deferred.

Not bad if you do it every year and are growing. The marginal benefit is only the new profit that is deferred until the next year.

2. Accelerate expenses - for cash-basis taxpayers, spend all of your cash at the end of the year. If you still have profit, take out a loan and keep spending.

Honestly, this is basically the short-term rental strategy in real estate, except it's way easier. Be careful not to buy capital assets that aren't subject to bonus depreciation.

Again, this is just a one-year deferral, and if you're prudent, you'll only spend money on things that you actually need and will grow the business.

3. Buy assets - this is basically the same as the point above. Buy a new SUV over 6,000 pounds and write it off.

It's a big deduction, but ultimately it's just a deferral strategy as well. You'll have taxable depreciation recapture when you sell.

My takeaway?

I left that firm. I thought it was all baloney and not much of the work we did was a value-add. 

Real tax planning isn't tax deferral alone. I felt that there was a better way - a way to get permanent savings if you were smart.

I was right.

"Defer taxes"

Here are 3 strategies to PERMANENTLY reduce your tax bill:

1. Even out your income.

The more tax brackets you can consistently fill out each year, the better. 

For example, a married couple making $2.25m over three years will save the most money if their income is $750k each year vs. $250k in one year and $1m in the others.

Using the 2025 brackets, evening out your income would save at least $34k in tax.

2. Optimize your QBI deduction.

The QBI (or Section 199A) deduction is based off of 20% of your business income. It's based on a few factors, including total wages paid by the business, total income, and the unadjusted basis of your assets (UBIA). 

If these ratios are off, your deduction is limited. For an operating company, the optimal ratio is 28.6% of wages to income.

For example, let's say you're a solo owner making $1 million in an S-corp before wages. You pay yourself a reasonable salary of $286k instead of $100k, you save yourself $20k in taxes.

3. PTET deduction 

If you're a business owner making $600k or more, this probably makes sense for you.

The Pass-Through Entity Tax allows a passthrough to pay taxes on behalf of it's owner and get a federal tax deduction. 

Example: $1 million in business income. 9.3% PTET paid to California results in a $93k deduction and a $34k federal tax savings.

TLDR. 

If you're a business owner making $1 million or more per year, you can easily save 60k+ of taxes per year using just these strategies alone!
