If you’re talking to someone important, DON’T do this. 

Don’t put them ABOVE YOU in the conversation. 

What does this mean? 

- Being too agreeable 
- Being too eager to please 

Example: 

Earlier today I’m listening to a sales call from one of my clients.

When the prospect would say something about his problem, my client would say: 

“Oh yes, absolutely, lots of people deal with that, that’s a great point” 

(Watch the video to hear the tone I used - that’s what matters most)

The words aren’t terrible, but the energy comes across as:

“I want you to like me” 
“I want you to accept me”

And it seems like you’re putting the other person above you.

It’s better to have a more neutral energy. 

And this is true no matter how big or important the other person is.

If you want to have more success with important people, speak to them as if you’re on a level playing field.

After all, you’re both humans, right?

I’ve always HATED this feeling. 

Years ago in a meeting, my boss asks what my thoughts are about one of our processes.

And I have great ideas. 

But…

I ramble and don’t articulate them well. 

When I finish, he stares at me blankly for a couple of seconds, then asks: 

“Anyone else?”

No acknowledgment. 

Then one of my coworkers says something similar. 

But in a more clear, structured way. 

He also sounds more confident.

And everyone was like: 

“Oh, that’s such a great idea, I agree with him, blah blah blah”

Very annoying. 

I’m thinking “I work harder than this guy, and he’s not even very smart, this is nonsense” 

But it was my fault for being a poor communicator. 

And it was my responsibility to be better. 

I decided that communication would never be the thing to hold me back from reaching my potential.

And today as a coach, after working with over 300 1-on-1 clients, 

I never want that to be the thing that holds ANYONE back from reaching their potential.

After all, it’s a skill you use every day, right?

If you want to speak with confidence, you need to stop ‘sitting in the dark.’ 

It’s costing you more than you think.
  
One of my clients described this perfectly:
 
“Improving my speaking feels like sitting in a pitch-black room.
 
And each week, you’re turning up the dimmer switch.”
 
When we started, his “room” was completely dark.
 
He couldn’t see what was holding him back.
 
But every week we worked together, the light got brighter.
 
And he started spotting the things he’d never noticed before:

— The small body language cues that chipped away at his credibility
— The weak, throwaway words that softened his impact
— The facial expressions that gave away his emotions

3 Silent Credibility Killers (that might be keeping you stuck)

One of my clients was stuck in the same Director role for years.

Smart guy. 
(Also a bit of an overthinker)

But he couldn’t figure out why he stopped progressing. 

After reviewing a few of his meetings, the issue was clear:

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝟑 𝐂𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤.

𝟏.) 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲

His explanations weren’t sharp or concise enough.
(Articulation of thoughts)

𝟐.) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞

He was unconsciously sending signals of uncertainty at times. 
(Voice and body language)

𝟑.) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

He’d sometimes assume understanding without confirming. 
(Listening and paraphrasing)

To the average person, these things probably didn't seem like a huge deal. 

Which is why he had a good job and was well-liked. 

But the difference between *good* and *excellent* is what can set you apart from others. 

And that's how you keep moving up. 

So here's what we did:

→ Clarity: Trained his brain to speak clearly under pressure
→ Confidence: Removed the uncertainty signals 
→ Confirmation: Learned to pause & paraphrase the right way

A couple months after working together, he scored a VP role at another company. 

(Keep in mind, the program itself is 3 months, so I won’t sugarcoat this and say he got a new job overnight)

If you don’t sound confident, people *don’t care* about what you’re saying.

That’s the cost of unclear communication.

I’ve seen smart people waste many hours: 

- Listening to podcasts 
- Watching YouTube videos 
- Going through online courses 

The problem is that consuming content doesn’t mean real-life improvement.

Here’s what actually works.

1.) Training your brain to clearly articulate your thoughts.

2.) Rewiring your confidence on a subconscious level

It’s a question that comes up sometimes. 

Here’s the truth:

It depends what we’re working on, but it’s some combo of: 

- Finding it easier to organize and articulate your thoughts 
- Feeling a bit more confident and in control

- Less filler words and weak words 

Now keep in mind, these aren’t MASSIVE changes immediately.

There’s no magic pill where you wake up in 2 weeks and suddenly become an elite communicator.

Trust me.

Because I’ve been trying to create one of those magic pills for years.

With that said, you keep noticing changes as you improve each week.

And by the time the program ends, most people are shocked at how much progress they’ve made.

They’re also shocked at how differently people respond to them.

Not because we did anything crazy.

It’s like anything else.

How much money do you save without a proper budget or plan for your finances?

A lot of entrepreneurs think they’re “pretty good communicators." BUT...

That belief is exactly what’s holding them back.

Because if you think you sound "good enough"

You stop improving.

You stop reviewing your calls.
You stop asking for feedback.

And slowly, you start losing opportunities you never notice.

“Good enough” leaves money on the table. 

It doesn’t command rooms.

And because I’ve helped over 300 people with these exact things, I’ve seen a lot of mistakes.

Let’s talk about a MASSIVELY common mistake I see all the time.

(I’ve literally reviewed thousands of calls from myself and others, and this happens WAY more than it should)

The mistake:

Not giving enough space for your words to be absorbed. 

This comes across in 2 ways:

1.) Going too fast
2.) Not pausing the right way

If you do this, it’s harder for people to absorb and understand the significance of what you’re saying.

Which means you’re much less likely to get the results you want. 

If you give your words space…

It’s easier for people to understand the value of what you’re saying.

This shift alone could make you a LOT more money. 

And get you a LOT more buy-in on your ideas.

So watch your calls back, watch your meetings back, and make sure you’re not making this mistake.  

P.S. When was the last time you watched a recording of yourself speaking?

Why does no one talk about your State Of Mind when it comes to communication?

The state that you’re in can have a massive impact on the way you communicate. 

Imagine this: 

1.) You’ve just had a massive fight with a family member.

2.) Then you spill coffee on yourself. 

3.) Then you stub your toe. 

4.) And you open your computer to see a snarky email from someone you’re not a fan of. 

How are you going to show up and speak in that meeting? 

What’s your energy going to be like?

Now imagine showing up to that same meeting: 

- Calm
- Composed 
- Confident 
- Centered 

Do you think you would speak differently?

Probably, right?

Here’s a 3 step process to quickly change your state. 

BBV: 

1.) Body - sit up straight, open body position 
2.) Breath - slow, deep, intentional breathing 
3.) Visualize - imagine the situation going well 

Even 30 seconds of this will make a difference. 

Being able to optimize your state of mind quickly...

(before any situation)

Is an extremely underrated part of being a great communicator.

Do you agree?

P.S. It’s almost too cold in Toronto to keep doing videos outside…

Do you like to talk? If you do, great. But… 

It doesn’t mean you’re GOOD at it. 

Many of my close friends are extroverts. 

But just because you’re an extrovert… 

It doesn’t mean you’re a good speaker. 

Extroverts may feel comfortable in social situations and enjoy talking more than introverts.

But effective communication is a lot more than being outgoing. 

For example:
 
- Explaining things clearly and concisely
- Telling interesting stories
- Staying calm under pressure 

These are important skills regardless of personality type. 

And if you’re an introvert, you can 100% build these skills. 

And become an exceptional communicator. 

(Even better than your extrovert friends, if you’d like)

Becoming a great speaker requires effort and training. 

Regardless of your personality. 

And whether you’re an introvert, extrovert, or anywhere in between…

I’m rooting for you. 

You got this.

I once threw up before a meeting.

Okay, not once. 

Repeatedly.

I struggled a lot with speaking early in my career. 

It made me feel unworthy of success.

But the good news is that it forced me to learn a lot. 

5 lessons I learned from this period:

1.) Confidence is not a fixed thing.  
It’s something you can program into your brain. 

2.) Anxiety grows in avoidance. 
Trying to speak less doesn't solve anything. 

3.) Even 5 minutes of prep helps. 
Writing ideas out before a meeting will make you speak better. 

4.) No one wants you to sound smart. 
They just want you to be clear and simple to understand. 

5.) Time does not heal all things. 
Waiting for things to get better does not work. 

Thankfully, I'm now comfortable speaking in all different types of situations. 

Do I like to do it? 

Well, let's just say I still have to fight the introvert urge to stay home all the time. Haha 

But anything is more enjoyable when you know what you're doing.

A founder I'm working with was UPSET after a board meeting:

“I was trying to sound stronger and ended up rambling.”

He runs a $10M+ company.
Incredibly smart guy.

He does big numbers.
He has the vision.

But when he had to speak in big moments, he still overdid it sometimes. 

- Talked too fast.
- Explained too much.
- Added points that didn’t need to be there.

Not wrong... just too much.

And it made his message harder to follow.

“I could see them checking out,” he told me.

“It felt like I was trying too hard.”

How did we fix this?

We worked on: 

1.) Tight structure
2.) Clear pacing
3.) Cutting 30% of what he was saying

A few weeks later, an investor said to him:

“You seem more sharp lately.

I don't know what you're doing, but it's landing better.”

He was pumped. 

Strong communication isn’t about talking more.

It’s about sounding clear, confident, and credible.

And instead of feeling frustrated or annoyed...

(because you know you could be speaking better)

You get to feel confident and proud of the way you speak.

I love this quote from him: 

“The one easy way to become worth 50% more than you are now - at least - is to hone your communication skills - both written and verbal.

If you can’t communicate, it’s like winking at a girl in the dark.

Nothing happens. 

You can have all the brainpower in the world, but you have to be able to transmit it.”

You heard it from the man himself!

P.S. I’m not sold on these A.I. pictures, but I think it’s better for everyone if it’s obvious they’re not real 😅

If you've ever been  talked over in a meeting, here’s 1 thing to change immediately:

Start your points with clarity and conviction.

Not fluffy uncertainty. 

So instead of:
“I think this might be a good idea”

You’d say:
“This is a better path forward, and here’s why.”

Because the first version creates doubt.

And the second creates respect.

People who struggle with this often think it’s just their personality.

– “I’m not the kind of person who takes up space.”
– “I don’t want to sound too aggressive.”
– “I’d rather let others speak first.”

I hear this type of thing too often. 

But here’s what you need to know:

1.) You deserve to be listened to.
2.) You deserve to be taken seriously.
3.) You deserve to show up with powerful presence. 

One of the shifts I often work on with clients is helping them feel and sound more confident.

Once they make this change, everything else gets easier:

- They’re less stressed when put on the spot 
- Their ideas come out more clearly
- They feel more calm under pressure

This is how communication should feel.

Clear. Composed. Powerful.

And it’s absolutely possible for you.

Remember: communication is a skill you can learn.

(And excel at)

P.S. Do you ever get talked over?

I’ve done hundreds of calls with prospects over the years, but I heard something RARE yesterday.   

We’re discussing the motivation behind him wanting to become a better communicator, and he says: 

“Well, I like giving gifts to people, I like buying nice things, I like giving people experiences.

And in order to give people the best experience possible, especially my clients, communication is a big part of that.”

He goes on to say:

“I’m a person that values quality, and the way that I speak should reflect that quality at a high level.”

This was interesting because normally people say things like: 

—> “I want to be more confident” 

—> “I want to advance my career and make more money”

—> “I want to grow my business and be able to influence people” 

—> “I want to get into politics so I can deceive people and get large amounts of power only to use it for personal gain and then not do any of the things I promised”

You know, the usual stuff. 

(Just kidding about that last one)

But this was a bit different. 

It was about: 

1.) Delivering an elevated, premium experience every time he speaks.

2.) Holding himself to a higher personal standard.

I thought it was interesting.

To begin, we reassessed the team structure, making staffing changes that refocused and realigned individual talents with outstanding organizational needs, even deploying some staff to partner organizations.  

With each of my adjustments, I remained cognizant of the importance of targeted efforts to increase staff satisfaction AND productivity, despite having an overall smaller staff. Simultaneously, I continued to lead in lobbying, working with my team and members to succeed.

Some of the initiatives I credit to this success include the implementation of a team-based approach to workflows and encouraging momentum by developing leaders and emulating open communication to support a robust, yet team-level, decision-making process. We even improved workload distribution based on staff feedback and dedicating time during work hours for team building.

I am happy to have achieved 100% buy-in on staff development initiatives by building comprehensive career plans for each staff member. Furthermore, improvements to staff engagement served to  increase member satisfaction in the perceived value provided by staff

Senior Vice President of Advocacy, Policy, and Communications and Deputy General Counsel

I was recruited to join the NCHA after demonstrating success in leading policy work at the General Assembly. I welcomed the challenges this opportunity presented and immediately met with members to gather pertinent information on pressing issues.

I leveraged the insights gleaned from these meetings in establishing formal processes to support the various functions of the job, to build my recommendations to the NCHA Board, and established multi-month collaboration sessions.

In the first year at NCHA, I was honored to have achieved an unprecedented 100% member approval of legislative priorities. The following legislative session, we capitalized on member engagement, defeating an effort to eliminate non-profit tax exemptions.

Upon assuming the role as the head of a team of six, I established an investigative practice within my team, deployed staff to impact locales, and collected situational knowledge prior to final policy recommendations and approvals.

As credit to the effectiveness of this practice, we developed and promoted new mechanisms to fund K-12 education and newer, less burdensome transportation funding requirements.

Relatedly, we halted outstanding proposals to close the Schools for the Deaf and the School for the Blind, and even gained traction in increasing focus on these resources to ensure success for all enrolled students.

Deputy Chief of Staff/policy director

The highest priority project during my tenure involved the overhaul of the $21 billion dollar North Carolina State budget to refocus resources on the priorities of the new General Assembly.

Two momentous wins overshadow all other accomplishments: securing a $2 billion allocation of Federal funds for new healthcare programs after diplomatically working with stakeholders to foster consensus and the attainment of a veto-proof budget vote through the successful mediation of a bipartisan collaboration.

In this role, I had the responsibility to draft legislation and public correspondence for a 20-member caucus resulting in an unprecedented program evaluation measure that passed without amendment. I also had the privilege to negotiate multiple agreements between both Democratic and Republican Legislators, interest groups, and state departments.

all congratulating me for 3 years at Cody Hand, LLC.
A fractional counsel and strategy firm I launched 3 years ago.

What a ride it has been. As I reflect on the last 3 years:
launched a few businesses,
sunsetted many of them,
learned a ton.

All right here on LinkedIn. 
With you all as my supporters and advisors. 

2026 is a growth year, 
and I plan to 10x my business,
and I cannot wait for a year from now.

I am counting my successes as we dance into the last six weeks of 2025:

1. I successfully back-burnered The Speakers Collaborative. It was my passion. My baby, life changing. It didn't get the traction and I couldn't afford to keep it.

2. I successfully took over an estates business. I now do more estate planning than fractional general counseling. 

3. I successfully met most of my fitness goals.

4. I successfully offboarded several GC clients and onboarded none.

5. I successfully wrote a book "Feed Your Team" and have yet to publish it.

Has 2025 been the year I wanted?
Not completely.

There have been wins.
There have been losses.
There has been growth.

As I spend the next six weeks wrapping up a year I don't care to repeat in whole,
My plan for 2026 is to keep the good, and toss the bad.

Do you ever get so involved in what you love that your entire body is all in?
No?

Maybe you should find the thing that does it for you and go all in.

One tiny loose wire caused death and BILLIONS in damage.
I listened to the report out yesterday of the investigation into the Dali ship collision that caused the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore to collapse.

The ship is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall and has miles of cables. 
In what was described as 

"finding the one loose bolt on the Eiffel Tower," 

the lead investigator said they found ONE wire where the label was too close to the plug.

That one label prevented the plug from fully and securely connecting.
That insecure connection came loose over time.
causing a breaker to flip.
causing a blackout.
causing lose of steering.
causing a collision with the bridge.
causing six innocent workers deaths.
causing over $5 BILLION in damages.

Encourage your team to do things the right way.
Reward them when the project is delayed because it wasn't safe.

The last thing you want is for your negligence to be the cause of a preventable tragedy.

If you’ve ever led transformation work, you know it’s not a straight climb - it’s a series of falls, bruises, breakthroughs, and bounce-backs. I’ve lived that cycle more times than I can count.  

When I was leading innovation in customer and employee experience, I thought success would come from big ideas and bold strategies. But what I learned - again and again - is that real transformation lives in the bounce. It’s in the moments when things fall apart, when a pilot fails, when resistance feels overwhelming, and yet… you choose to keep going.

So as you move through this week, remember: success isn’t measured by how hard you hit the ground - it’s defined by how high you rise after you land.

You haven't lived until you have eaten this one side dish:
My grandfather's oyster dressing.

Every year I make a full pan.
Every year I toss half the pan.
All because you "don't like oysters"

But you have never tried it.

You don't know the delectable, melt in your mouth deliciousness.

The Preparation is sacred.
Make the cornbread 2 days early, from scratch.
Simmer the turkey parts, mirepoix, butter, and stock on low OVERNIGHT.
Chop the oysters so fine their presence only adds to the richness.

Assemble and, as the final step, make sure there is a fine layer of that delicious stock covering the top when you place it gently into the oven.

I would eat this alone and call it Thanksgiving.

There is nothing today about leadership, law, or lobbying.

You are a bad boss
if you 
- Take over someone's time off with non-urgent issues.
- - Email them a list on a Saturday.
- - - Shame them in front of the team.

Just because it is on your mind and you cannot manage your own boundaries doesn't mean you should inflict that on everyone else.

Be a leader - respect your people. 

As I look to expand my law firm in 2026, these are some of the principles I will incorporate as I build my team.

Here is your playbook for the Super Bowl of Mondays of 2025:

I don't take calls on the First Monday of the Month.
I don't take appointments on the First Monday of the Month.
I spend the day thinking and planning.

Every month I check in - 
- How did last month go?
- How is this Quarter going?
- How will we succeed this month?

Quarterly I add in planning for the next quarter.

But today is the Superbowl of Mondays!!!
The Last First Monday of 2025!!!

I also examine how 2025 is going,
How I will end 2025 well,
and I envision how 2026 will go.

I have four buckets of work/life and I do it for each of them.
Some buckets are bigger than others,
Some buckets are more meaningful that others,
but all buckets get attention.

If you live your life with intention, you crave these days.
Many fear them. Facing up to the failures.
I crave them. owning the successes and figuring out how to right the ship.

In 2020, at the height of COVID, my hospital clients were looking for ways to keep people safely at home while received care. 

The Hospital at Home model was born (or revived?)

For years before that, we had been lobbying our friends in Washington to provide Medicare reimbursements for remote care. No Dice. They only paid for real time monitoring, and not much at that. 

Flash forward to 2025 and I am approached to partner with a company on the forefront of Remote Patient Monitoring. 

AND - they have Medicare reimbursement codes!

EmmiTec.Health is doing things that we have needed for some time. 

They provide better care, at home, by keeping an eye on the patient and intervening earlier. 

It saves everyone time, money, and the hassle of getting to a clinical setting.

It is cool that this new partnership was only after a decade of work to get here.

Combat sorrow by practicing gratitude and engaging in service, as focusing on what you have and helping others can shift your mindset from one of lack to one of abundance and purpose. Gratitude cultivates a more positive outlook by highlighting existing blessings, while service redirects painful emotions outward by providing a sense of meaning and connection. 

Ive been helping The Fifth Grade Leadership Club ar CES.  It has been amazing to watch them ask, collect and put together 100 shelf stable Thanksgiving Bags plus extras together to give away tomorrow.  I am grateful that my daughter is growing up in a community of service to combat feeling of wanting more on top of more.  Im so proud of these young leaders. Im so happy to be a part of their efforts!
