A beautiful family portrait is missing from my walls. That’s because during my childhood, we never had a single one. Instead, we had what my sisters and I affectionately call our “family mug shots.” These were always taken at the last minute of a family visit, and usually involved my sisters and me in our pajamas, with my grandparents in their coats, on their way out the door — at about 6 am. Now, as an adult, I long for just one beautifully composed family portrait from my childhood — all the people I love most, together, smiling and happy.

For as long as I can remember, family stories of all sorts fueled my imagination. My grandfather started the tradition of telling bedtime stories about his childhood deep in the Carolina mountains to my mom; she and my dad continued the tradition by telling us stories about their own childhoods. To this day, I can still see those stories unfolding in my mind’s eye — almost like a series of photographs. I think they instilled in me my passion for capturing other people’s stories on film. Once the time is gone, you can never go back to capture those fleeting moments. This is why I love helping other families tell their own stories in Legacy Portraits. 

For 25 years, I’ve been ensuring that my clients’ family stories are preserved. Having trained with some of the best portrait artists and photographers in the country, I’m focused on giving my clients my all. I’ve become known for capturing families in a way that’s unique and meaningful to them. The result is the forging of long-term relationships with clients who become like family. 

I live in a century-old home in a historic neighborhood in Roanoke, Virginia with my husband and partner in life and business, Tim. When I’m not working with clients or designing their portraits in far-away places, you can find me deciding what recipe to cook next, working on my latest renovation project, or planning the details for next travel adventure.

Life is a story that isn’t always predictable. 

It doesn’t always go as we plan. 

And that can be scary- especially when it comes to our children. 

For this family, one day things were normal; the next, everything had changed. Their oldest had cancer. 

The world didn’t stop, but it felt like it should. 

After a long year of surgery, trips to the hospital, and chemo, they got the best gift they could imagine: he was given a clean bill of health. 

They were relieved, thrilled, grateful. 

Now it was time to turn the page to the next chapter of their lives. 

We met when they decided they had to have a portrait that told this part of their story. 

The clients had met and fallen in love at the university in town, and had never left. This area of Virginia was their adopted home. So we made the mountains a part of the story. 

But the essence of this portrait - regardless of the place- is the bond they have as a family. 

This is so much more than just a family picture. 

It’s something that says: “this is our family. We’re all here, together, right where we want to be.”

You never know when a “normal” holiday week is actually the last one of its kind. 

It seems normal. Suitcases carried in, shoes kicked off in the entryway, everyone eating a late dinner after a long flight. It’s just a relief: they made it… we’re all here.

But next year, with or without warning, something's different:

One of the kids is studying abroad and not coming home this time. 
Someone's moved out of state. 
A new partner joins the mix. 
A new baby arrives. 
Someone's missing, because life shifted in a way no one expected.

Families are always moving — literally and emotionally. The holidays just boil it all down to a few short days or hours. They're a microcosm of what happens the rest of the year.

And that's why portraits of the entire family are so powerful. Especially when they mark the last time before everything changes.

Portraits freeze who your family is in this moment - this version that you know will change, but don't want to forget.

One thing I've learned after years of photographing families: the "in-between" years are the ones we take for granted. The ones that feel ordinary. Everyone is just….here. 

But these are the moments that become priceless.

This season might be that year for your family. 

While everyone's together - whether that’s at the home you’ve raised your children in, the place where you grew up, or someplace entirely new - make this year a part of your history. 

Because this “normal” version of your family may never exist again. 

If this season feels ordinary, maybe that’s the perfect reason to capture it—before the ordinary becomes the extraordinary.

The older I get, the more I realize what photographs are really about: connection.

I barely remember the visit with my grandparents, uncle and aunt in the picture here.  And I have absolutely no memory of this exact moment — even though I was the one who took the photo (using my very impressive 13-year-old camera skills.)

But I’m so glad I took this picture, because seeing it now makes me feel instantly connected to all of them — my parents, my uncle, my grandparents.
 
Looking at it now, I see my dad at half the age he is today, still wearing the same silly grin; my grandmother, always sitting on the floor like this, even when she was 80.

I hear my uncle laughing his laugh that makes me laugh; my grandfather telling a story as only he could, in his Tidewater accent. 

This one photo starts a cascade of memories – first a few, then more, as if I’m watching a film at 2x speed.

It helps me connect to my family, heritage, the people I love. 

The same thing happens to my clients when they see their portraits for the first time. They immediately start remembering the day we made them. All of the moments come rushing back: 

🤣 Jack’s silly jokes
🌪️ the wind blowing in circles while we held Mia’s dress back
🗝️ behind-the-scenes giggles as the kids played Clue in front of the camera

Portraits hold connection. And that’s what we come back to, every time.
