I came to the Wealth Management industry after I completed a rigorous training program inside of a bank’s management trainee program. I always tell people I grew up in the business because I started at such a young age. I thought about quitting.


More than once, actually.

But every time that thought crept in, I remembered who was watching.

My wife was watching, waking up at 4am to an empty bed because I was already grinding.

My kids were watching.

How could I teach them to do hard things if I quit when things got uncomfortable?

How could I tell them to be brave if I wasn't willing to push through fear myself?

My dad was watching a military veteran who fought through major health issues and still shows up every day.

My mom, the curly-haired legend...one of the smartest, most resilient thinkers I've ever known.

She never quits. Not ever.

There were so many moments I questioned whether I should keep going as a financial advisor.

This job isn't easy.

It's hard to get in front of the people who need your help.

Hard to support families with retirement planning, college funding, and business sales.

But every time I thought about walking away, God put the right people in my path.

People like my friend David Rodriguez , who changed everything for me.

A guy who opened doors I could've never opened alone.

Who introduced me to everyone in Austin.

Who believed in me long before the results showed up.

So if you're reading this and you're scared, tired, or wondering if you should quit...

Remember who's watching.

Remember who you're doing it for.

Here's what helped me keep going:

This picture means everything to me…

Two years ago, I was sitting at my kids’ basketball game when I sent a simple check-in text to one of the newest partner advisors in our Forefront Advisor Network.

Nothing fancy. Just:

“How are you feeling about launching your new firm? How does freedom feel?”

Her reply stopped me cold.

It made me tear up right there in the bleachers.

She wrote:

“Thank you for having the vision for folks like me who the industry thinks isn’t worthy because of my book size at this time! Well we will show them won’t we!!!”

That advisor was Kathleen Oberneder CFP® ChSNC® 

A mom of three.
One daughter with special needs.
A woman who spent years navigating those challenges for her own family and in the process discovered a calling to help other families do the same.

And here’s the truth:

Kathleen was always going to win.

She’s determined.
She’s courageous.

That’s what Bridget asked me the first time we met over 10 years ago.
Her voice was steady but I could hear the fear underneath.

She and her husband Jeff are two of the kindest, hardest-working people you’ll meet. But every advisor they approached before me brushed them aside.

Not enough assets.
Not worth the time.
Come back when you’re “valuable.”

I’ve never believed in that.
I never had a minimum.
I’m here to be a family Wealth CFO not just an investment manager.

So when she asked, I told her:
“Of course. Our team would be honored to help you.”

After they left my office, I sat there a little emotional.
Because it takes real courage to say, “We can’t do this alone. Can you help us?”

And yesterday, twelve years later, we met for a gratitude lunch. Over red wine and laughter, we looked back on everything we’ve built together:

• Almost paid off their mortgage years before retirement
• Put two amazing daughters through college (and one through a master’s program)
• Celebrated a wedding
• Navigated job changes, raises, and corporate curveballs
• Turned Bridget into a budgeting powerhouse (shoutout @youneedabudget)
• Fully funded retirement 10 years early
• Just had their first grandbaby and girl

Then Jeff said something that hit me:
“We’re so much more confident and laid-back now.”
And Bridget added,
“I don’t know that we could’ve figured this out without you.”

As we dreamed together about what’s next Texas wine country, a barndominium, more freedom, less worry I couldn’t help but think:

This all started because they were brave enough to ask for help.

If you want to sleep better at night…
If you want clarity instead of chaos…
If you want to stop carrying it all alone…

Sometimes the first step is simply saying,
“Would you help us?”

Christmas Came Early This Year 🎄

That’s the text I sent our clients Ben and Sarah.

A few weeks ago they emailed me…

Full of excitement.

And a little disbelief:

“We found our dream place and God really showed up big.
What do we need to do to make it happen financially?”

Ben and Sarah are part of a leadership organization serving college church campuses nationwide.

And for years…

God had placed a dream on their hearts:

A property in Texas where they could host ministry retreats, pour into leaders, and create a space for spiritual rest.

For two years they prayed.
They waited.
They searched.

Then thanks to their rockstar realtor Angela the property finally appeared.

14 acres.
A main house.
Three tiny homes.
A barndominium.
And a couple miniature donkeys straight out of Shrek.

A total God thing.

That’s when our team at Forefront stepped in.

Before I became a financial advisor, I spent years as a banker and lender.

So negotiating, structuring, and finding creative pathways to “yes”
is kind of my thing.

We went straight into due diligence.

→ Identified three lenders that work with land + home + ag-exempt properties
→ Built the Personal Financial Statement and full loan file

Everything was lining up beautifully.

And then…

The gut punch.

The lender came back and said Ben and Sarah’s credit score had dropped below the 680 minimum.

That made zero sense.

They both had 700+ credit and spotless histories.

Turns out a credit card company had a glitch.
Autopay failed.
They weren’t notified.
A late payment hit their report.

It was heartbreaking.

Properties like this do not come around often.

But this is where the magic happens:

In the problem-solving.
In the advocacy.
In the fight for a client’s dream.

Here’s what we did:

→ Paid down all other credit cards to zero
→ Had both of their parents (800+ credit) add them as authorized users
→ Requested a rapid rescore… but the lender didn’t offer it

So now the clock was ticking.

We regrouped.
We tapped our network.
We found another lender who does handle rapid rescoring and specializes in acreage properties.

Within days…

The rescore was complete.
Their credit was corrected.
And Ben and Sarah were officially under contract on their dream property just under $1 million for nearly 14 acres where their ministry can thrive.

When they called to tell us how grateful they were, they said:

“We don’t know what we would’ve done without you.
There were so many moments we thought this might fall apart,
but every step of the way you helped us navigate it with ease.”

So yes…

Christmas came early for Ben and Sarah.

And honestly?

For us too.

Because helping people live out the purpose God puts on their lives…

There’s nothing more rewarding.

One idea helped me grow more in 12 months than the previous 5 years combined.

Build a Personal Board of Directors.

Not for your business. For your life.

CEOs surround themselves with people who challenge them.

People who guide them.

People who elevate their decisions.

Why wouldn't you do the same?

Here's the truth as we enter January:

You don't need more resolutions.

You need the right people around you.

Your future success depends less on what goals you set.

And more on who shapes you into the person who achieves them.

In 2022, I built my first Personal Board.

With one rule: Reach UP in every area.

My board looked like this:

→ MENTORS: God, my wife, Jim Rohn, Eric D. Thomas, Ph.D. 
→ CHEERLEADERS: Mom, Dad, my wife, Jenny Varteressian, Esq. 
→ CAREER COACHES: Colleen Bowler, CFP®  , Megan Alarid

→ CONNECTORS: H. Adam Holt, CFP®, ChFC®  , David Rodriguez

Building that board was eye-opening.

It revealed strengths.

And exact areas where I needed to grow.

Since then, I've rebuilt my board four times.

Twice a year.

Always asking: Are these the people who will help me become the person my goals require?

Here's what most people miss:

Your board doesn't have to mentor you directly.

Many will influence you through their books.

Their podcasts.

Their content.

Their thinking.

Their standards.

The point is intention:

Choose people who raise your standards.

Choose people who stretch your vision.

Choose people who reflect the future you.

Not the past you.

And if you can, connect with them.

Engage with their work.

Put yourself near people who elevate your ceiling.

Napoleon Hill called it the Mastermind.

My friend Gary Pia, CFP®  even built a virtual board using ChatGPT.

His board has members like Washington, Lincoln, Edison, Jobs, Churchill, Marcus Aurelius.

Imagine meeting with that group every morning.

So as the New Year approaches, forget the same old goals.

Try something radically more powerful:

Because goals don't change your life.

Two weeks ago I was frustrated.
